Mary, Could you tell us what drew these people to Branch Co Michigan. Or maybe what they had in common. I also have traced my family from Huron Co Ohio to Stueben Co Indiana to Branch Co Michigan. My family name was Letts/Lutts and Soule. Ruth At 10:35 PM 03/28/2001 -0600, you wrote: >You are welcome too, Bobbie. Ruth, I don't really know what to say about this. Michigan wasn't a state until about 1836-7, But some folks came for the early party, hee hee. They got land from the government, and this land was covered with lush prairies, hardwood forests, many lakes, lots of game and rich soil for their crops. Need I say more ? well, a little. Branch County is centrally located between Detroit and Chicago, on the old Saulk Trail, which was an indian trail between these two major cities. The highway US 12 mainly follows that old indian trail, and if you look closly, you might still see a couple of trees that are wrapped together....the indians marking the trail by twisting together the young saplings... From the upper Ohio area, the waterway to the west, and all, many folks traveled thru this lower tier of counties in Michigan on their way westward. I hope this helps you picture the beauty of the area. Ruth, was there someone you wanted me to look up ? Please give one family, or a couple names...and a timeframe....if you have specific info for me to work with, that's good too. Hi, My family of Lutts/Reeds or Soules/Reeds seemed to be following the railways. So I presumed that the tracks lead them to Branch Co. from Stueben Co. Was I wrong? This family is very confusing. I have a Franklin Reed who Married a Mary Soules in New London, Huron Co. in April 1875. In May 1876 I have a birth being recorded in the Huron County Probate office for a Ora Sylvanis Reed, born 9 July 1875 in Stueben Co Indiana to a Frank and Mary Soules. She then disappears and Frank has 4 more children with a Mary Litts/Lutts/Letts about 2 years apart. OK, I presumed that Mary Soules died and he married a Mary Litts/Lutts/Letts before the birth of sister Effie on 1 May 1877. I have not been able to find a Soules family for Mary. I did find a Litts/Lutts/Letts family for second wife in Stueben Co. Ind. This family then moved to Branch Co Michigan. Ora married in Jan 1901 and gave his mother as Mary Letts. I could never find a death record for Mary Soules Reed. Mary Letts (This spelling used in Census and records most) had parents Daniel and Diane Letts. Daniel lived and died in Huron County in late 1850s when Mary was about 6 years old. Diane continued to live with her in laws and moved to Scott Twp, Stueben Co. Ind. when they moved. She was listed as a pauper in the Census of 1870. Her inlaws were Edward and Caroline Letts. It was Edwards will that lead me to Branch Co. Mi. Mary Letts siblings were Edward, Viola, John and Cornelia. I need a big light to shine in a direction with info on this family.
