    1. [OHHURON-L] Benjamin Bartlett/Polly Pigg (Pidge) 1800
    2. Elaine Johnson
    3. I have been trying for two years now to solve the puzzle of my Benjamin Bartlett. I received the (as yet unverified) information below a couple of days ago. Prior to this point all I had was the name "Benjamin Bartlett and Polly Pidge, of Eaton County, Michigan". The names and dates below were compiled by an older generation researching the Burpee family. This is what I have: Benjamin Bartlett, born Dec 10, 1770, Died May 17, 1849. Married Polly Pigg (Pidge). Polly was born Feb 18, 1767 and died July 17, 1843. Children of Polly and Benjamin: Clarissa Bartlett, b. March 8, 1797, d. July 24, 1849. Daniel Bartlett, born Jan 21, 1801., d. May 6, 1847. Cynthia Bartlett, (twin) b. May 6, 1804 d. Nov. 29, 1844. (my ggg grandmother) Hulda Bartlett, (twin) b. May 6, 1804 Wyrum Bartlett. Benjamin Bartlett I was previously given the information that Cynthia's father Benjamin "was of Eaton County, Mich." In researching in Eaton County, I did find a Benjamin Bartlett who was born Sept. 29, 1811 in Washington County, Ohio and died Nov. 27, 1885 in Eaton County, Michigan. But he was much too young to be Cynthia's father. Since it appears that Cynthia had a brother named Benjamin, could this be him? Right time frame, and right county of birth.. This particular Benjamin was also in Huron County the same time Cynthia and her husband Pearson Burpee was there. His wife Eunice Hunt was the sister of Cynthia's daughter's husband (James Hunt). But I have no proof that the Benjamin Bartlett that was in Huron County and Eaton County is the brother of Cynthia. I know that Benjamin and Polly (Pigg) Bartlett were in Washington County, Ohio in 1822, when their daughter Cynthia married Pearson Burpee. I find a Benjamin Bartlett in Washington County, Ohio as early as 1800 and as late as 1830 (on the census). I am uncertain whether it is the right one or not. Cynthia and Pearson bought land in Huron County, Ohio in 1829, where they both died. He died Sept. 17, 1838. She remarried to a David Wright and died November 29, 1844. They are buried in Peru Center (School House) Cemetery at Peru, Huron County, Ohio. Pearson Burpee's family was originally from Massachusetts, then migrated to Vermont, then to New York, before going to Washington County, Ohio. I have followed similar paths looking for information on Benjamin and Polly. With no luck at all. Benjamin and Polly have been my stumbling block for about 2 years now. However, all this time I had her name as Pidge. It is now my understanding that is an alternate spelling. I have never looked for the surname Pigg. I have absolutely no clues as to parents for either of them. No clues as to where they might have originally been from. And no clues as to where they were when they died. Maybe Washington County, Ohio, maybe Huron County, Ohio, and maybe Eaton County, Michigan. I know this is terribly long for a query, but I wanted to give you the information that I had. If anyone can help me with this puzzle, I would be very grateful. Elaine Johnson Elaine Johnson http://genweb.net/27th-Iowa

MJ's brother or cousin??? > > Any comment?] > Any suggestion on how to piece together the marriage for our Mary Jane? > > -Julie >> Hi Julie, I had no luck in finding a marriage between a Mary Jane BUCK and a __PEARL in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. If Mary Jane had been married to a PEARL before her marriage to Abel BARBER, I wonder a bit why she was listed in our marriage book as just Mary Jane PEARL in her marriage to Abel BARBER, and not Mrs. Mary Jane PEARL. Yet, in your 1850 census of the Edward C. RIGGS household you show a Mary PEARL, age 14 (b. ca 1836), suggesting she was the daughter of the union of Mary Jane and a PEARL. Conceivably, this Mary PEARL (b. ca 1836) could be the Mary Jane PEARL who married Andrew J. GOODEL 15 April 1858. The name would work, as well as the age at time of marriage. This latter marriage appears in both our Huron County, Ohio marriage book, and the IGI online web site (www.familysearch.org). This site shows the birthyear and birthplace of Mary Jane PEARL as ca 1837, and "Huron, Ohio." As the tag line of the old joke goes---there's got to be a pony somewhere under all this! Regards, Ken Shute, in MD (kwsroots@aol.com).

    2. Myrna Casey
    3. Hi Nancy, I've seen you help so many people with their searches, and I've hit this brick wall that is so thick, that I need some help. I'm looking for my 3rd Gr. Grandfather Jacob F. Underhill, age 64 years in 1850 census. I don't find him after this. He lived in Ruggles Twp. in 1845, but I don't find him or any Underhill's in Ashland Co. cemeteries. The only thing I can think is he must be in Huron Co. since they are so close. He was a member of the Quaker colony, but not in the Quaker or Underhill cemetery. Hope you can help. Thanks so much. Thanks so much for your information - ever bit helps. Sincerely Ann annieb437@yahoo.com >> Hi Ann, With your 1850 Census record for the RIGGS/BARBER family as a starting point, I did some more digging and found that Edward C. RIGGS was married to three women (sequentially, not concurrently), including the Mary cited in the 1850 record. Our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book shows, for Townsend Center Cemetery, Townsend Township: Page 856. Row 4-- North Side of Drive. E.C. RIGGS 1804-1894. Jane, his wife, 1809-1843. Mary J., his wife, 1817-1866. Sarah, his wife, 1824-1917. Netty, d/o E.C. and M.J. RIGGS, b. & d. 1858. Florence, d/o J.L. & A. RIGGS, b. & d. 1863. Matthew S., 1829-1850. Samuel L. 1833-1863. John L. 1839-1863, sons of E.C. & J. RIGGS. It appears that the "Mary" in your 1850 Census record is Mary Jane PEARL, and no slouch in the marriage department either. Our Huron County, Ohio Marriage book shows the following: Mary Jane PEARL m. Abel BARBER 28 Oct 1838. Mrs. Mary Jane BARBER m. Edward C. RIGGS 29 Jan 1846. Mary Jane PEARL m. Andrew J. GOODEL 15 Apr 1858. (Note: I looked for "Mary Janes" who married a BARBER in our marriage book, 1815-1854. The above Mary Jane PEARL was the only one who fit as far as first and middle names, and age at marriage. The only other candidate, which I decided wasn't a very good one, was a "Mary BARBER" (middle name not given) who married an Ansel BARBER 23 Mar 1830---too early for a marriage date.) Also, from the online IGI web site (www.familysearch.org), I find: Mary Jane PEARL m. Isaac G. SHERMAN 26 Feb 1862 in Morrow (Co.?), Ohio. I could not find the marriage of either Jane or Sarah with Edward C. RIGGS, but I note that Jane died in 1843, preceding the marriage of Mrs. Mary Jane BARBER to Edward C. RIGGS. I could not find the death of Abel BARBER. If the Mary Jane PEARLs mentioned above are the same person, and since her marriages to GOODEL and SHERMAN occur after the marriage to Edward C. RIGGS , and before his death in 1894, it might suggest Mary Jane and Edward C. were divorced between 1846-1858. Other bits and pieces on Edward C. RIGGS: >From our Huron County, Ohio Death Index, 1867-1908: E.C. RIGGS d. 08/23/1894. Vol. 2- Page 169. In our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879: Page 247. Section on Townsend Township. "E.C. RIGGS and family ......settled in 1834... on lot 50." (Presumably, this may have included his wife "Jane, 1809-1843.") >From our 1873 and 1891 Atlases, Huron County, Ohio, I see Edward C. RIGGS owned land in Townsend Township--- section 3, lots 50, 51 & 52 in 1873; and section 3, lots 46, 50, 51, 70 & 71 in 1891. Finally, our 1870 Census Index for Huron County, Ohio, shows the following RIGGS on census page 574A, Townsend Township. Read first name, age and place of birth. Edward C., 66, NY Sarah, 40, England Charles, 19, OH George E., 5/12, OH George, 17, OH Martin, 13, OH Sarah, 24, OH Thomas, 28, OH William, 15, OH. I realize this doesn't solve your question regarding Oliver and Theodore BARBER, but maybe it offers some stepping stones in that direction. Regards, Ken Shute, in MD (kwsroots@aol.com).

    1. [OHHURON-L] Re: OHHURON-D Digest V00 #195-goldenrod paper
    2. Myrna, I also live in the West, Southern California, if that is the West you are talking about. I don't know if I can explain this procedure correctly, because we seem to have different types of readers. The readers I use have the glass, rollers, film, etc. at the top and the screen is at the bottom. The paper is put over the screen, the light and writing shine down on to the screen and the colored paper helps make the writing sort of "pop" out. You can even tilt the paper to sometimes make the writing somewhat enlarged. I don't think I have ever seen a reader with the rollers at the bottom and the screen on top of them, so I don't know if my waffles will work on your pancakes. Nancy :-)

    2. Nancy, I think I've finally got it! What you mean is to just lay the paper down so the words shine on the paper instead of the machine, right? I can see now how this would make it easier to read. Thanks for such a good tip. Sharon

I wonder if William had a brother named James that had moved to Huron Co as well. His eldest son was named James, who also had a son named James and I think there may have been another generation of a James HOPKINS, too. In any case, I think I'm interested enough to inconvenience you to send as many details of Sarah Jane that you have. Thanks!
