Hello fellow listers. I just joined and am trying to find out more information on my grandmothers family. This is what I know. My grandmother, Mary Heeter, was born on a farm near Monroeville, Ohio on March 28.1869. Her father's name was John Heeter and his first wife was Mary Warren. They had three children,Jacob,Mary (my grandmother) and John. After Mary Warren died ,(sometime in the early 1870s ), John married Catherine Gourlang at the St. Joseph's Church in Monroeville on Oct 13.1874. I am trying to find more information on Mary Warren and Catherine Gourlang and trying to determine when the Heeter's came to Ohio.

Has anyone ever heard of the Tavern Inn on Cline Street in Norwalk back in the era beween 1842 and 1878? Kathy
Has anyone ever heard of the Milan Harbor reached by grain caravan men travelling through Huron County (Norwalk), Ohio? I know there was a canal but where did it go? Kathy
There are probably more people who could give you more exact info on the Milan Canal, but I can answer your question. The Village of Milan is just north of the boundary between Erie and Huron Counties. The Milan Canal followed the Huron River from Lake Erie to Milan or from what is today the City of Huron to the Village of Milan. All roads in the area headed for Milan in the early days because the farmers hauled their crops to Milan to be shipped out of North Central Ohio over the lake to the Erie Canal and then to New York Harbor. Wether there was a reason other than distance that made Milan the best place to ship from is not know by me. Milan lost their advantage when the railroad took arrived about 1860. For Lynne Wilson. Hi Lynne, I'm glad to hear that the info on the SUHRs was useful. Your original query focused on William SUHR and William A. SUHR. However, here is information on Charles SUHR, brother to William A. SUHR and son of William. It is taken from the biographical sketch on Charles SUHR, found in Vol. 2, page 455 of the History of Huron County, Ohio, by A.J. Baughman, 1909. The father of Charles SUHR was William SUHR who was born in Saxony, Germany 7 Mar 1829. William came to the U.S. with his parents at age 15. Charles, born 16 Oct 1860 in Norwalk, was the fifth of six children of William and Mary (CASHBAUGH) SUHR. The children were: Amelia, born in Cleveland but acidentally killed at age 12; George W., born in Norwalk in 1855; Mary and William A., also natives of Norwalk; Charles; and Laura E. who died in July, 1908. Charles SUHR was educated in the Norwalk schools, and undertook a three year college course at Kenyon, Ohio. He later studied law, pursuing his reading under the direction of Stephen M. Young. In 1885, Charles was admitted to the bar and opened an office in Norwalk. In 1902 he was elected probate judge, which office he held until 1909 when he retired from the bench and resumed private practice. In 1891, Charles SUHR married Millie A. HOWE, native of Peru Township, Huron County, Ohio.. She was the daughter of James and Hannah L. (HATFIELD) HOWE. Charles and Millie had four children: Carl W., J. Vernon, Marian M., and Charles Dudley. Charles belonged to the Masons, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and the Knights of the Maccabees. I was just trying to fill in some dates. I question if I'll get to the TERWILLIGER's before I die!!!!!! <grin> This business is NEVER done!!!! I went to school with some MOTTER's, Stanley was in my grade at Savannah High School. Richard Motter married my cousin, Janet Moritz. Small world isn't it!! Rita Kopp tells me there are a lot of errors in the Ashland cemetery book. Have you tried the CH in Ashland for a death? Oh, just read your note again, guess you have. I don't know where to tell you to go. She might have gone to live with a daughter and died and been buried there. Have you tried her children?
