I have another question, about the book the genealogy society made. It's regarding the "Steuben" cemetery. I have a JOHN CROW (my gr-gr-grandfather) who disappeared from Canada in the mid 1850's and his brother Robert Crow I just found out was buried at the Steuben Cemetery. Well in this cemetery is John Crow who died (or was buried) in the cemetery April 20, 1858 at age 37 years, 4 months, 2 days. How can I find out any more info about this John Crow. Like what records were looked at to write this book where someone put down the exact age, and possibly the exact death date, or burial date, which ever it is for the book. This is very important to my research that I establish John Crow, either brother of Robert, or son of Robert (that is his father's name) or born in Ontario? He was living in Raleigh ON before he disappeared, and his wife's name is Jeanne Ouellette and she also disappeared, but maybe she died first and he went to Huron County to see his brother. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I have never done OH research, or only a tiny bit. Coleen >> Hi Coleen, Re the source of information appearing in the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscription book: I may have misunderstood your question ("like what records were looked at to write this book..."), but the information that appears therein is the actual inscriptions appearing on the tombstones as copied by HCC/OGS volunteers. In some cases, information from burial cards held by the cemetery were included in the book, but a source of this type, as opposed to a tombstone inscription, would be identified as such. This project took 10 years to complete. I found several references to Robert CROW in our Huron County, Ohio publications. I also found references to two CROW families--one in Jefferson County, Ohio, and one in Pickaway County, Ohio, in which a John and Robert CROW were listed as brothers. David is my ancestor: there were 6 other children, Josiah, Anson, Eber, Horace, Hiram and Sophia who married Wyatt Cook (Cooke). David left Ohio at some point and landed in MO where he married Margaret McDonald abt. 1846. Our family history has a birth date for David abt. 1806 which would have made him some what "old" for a 1846 marriage date. Although I have not lived in Ohio for many years I grew up in Galion. So this Thanksgiving part of my trip home will be to Huron Co and the cemetery to pay a visit to my long lost/newly found family. I am also keeping my fingers crossed the library maybe open. Davids daughter; my G-grand, Vintie Root McDonald Lutz(1) McDonald(2) ( married a cousin with same last name) died in 1907 while visiting Root cousins in NE Ohio but we don't know which ones. Another mystery for another day. Thanks again, Barbara Campbell >> Hi Barbara, Here are references I found which appear to relate to your Josiah ROOT family. Hi all, Ken Shute has been transcribing the Index to the Plat Book of ca 1845, Huron County, Ohio. We have about half of it done. All surnames from A through H are now on-line. Just remember there is no look-up service available for this book. We only have the index. You would need to write to the chapter and request research done within Huron County. Hi All, Please feel free to ask for a lookup in the Cemetery book at any time. Do remember that we are all volunteers with a limited amount of time to do research for others. When requesting a lookup make sure to limit your request to two or three individuals at a time. If you want a large amount of research done for you within Huron County, we do offer that service. Take a look at the link to the "Research - done for you" page. That gives all the particulars. This would be the suggested route for any large amount of research needed. It looks like you, Bob, have a lot of research and we could help you with original documents. There is no charge for any lookups done by the volunteers here on the mail list, but if the research that is done for you is appreciated, our volunteers sometimes suggest a donation to the HCC/OGS toward publishing another book or any other project you feel kindly towards. Nothing we do comes with a price tag. We must rely on your appreciation of our efforts and thus are able to remain a non-profit (tax deductible for you) organization. Ok - let me explain, I have this very old photo album, patent date 11/26/1896. I used to know every name for every picture but that has been long forgotten since my grandmother died in 1971. Is there anyone out there that can find old business in Huron County - these photo's have photographers marks. One problem is that I don't know if some of these are from Plymouth, OH or Plymouth, ENG.. Two names I have are Weatherby(Plymouth) and Frank C. Pennington(New Haven). I do know photographer's records are sometimes passed down, but not always. I'm in the process of scanning them but it's not easy. Lisa P.
