NatureGood Morning, I have just finished putting up a web site for Wakeman Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. The history of the church is online, along with a listing of the ministers of the church. Please check: http://wakemanucc.org/wakemanucc/Messenger.htm Thanks, Claudia Garner, Webmaster
To Tom Tremble I saw your e-mail message regarding the Ohio 25th Volanteer Infantry Division, and a book written by Edward C. Culp. I am looking for information regarding my gr-gr-gr uncle, James Clark, who came from Ruggles Township in Huron County, and served in the Union Army. I don't know what regiment he served in. At the end of the war he traveled by foot from Kentucky to Michigan to visit his sister before returning home to Rugles Township. Was he a member of the Ohio 25th? If not, what division might he have been in? Thanks for your help. Jim Clark
Hi, Tom I can provide some informatoin on the Ohio 25th Volunteer Infantry division from a book written by my Great Grandfather, Edward C Culp. The book is rather dry reading, but lists people in the various companys and described some of the action the group saw. Most of the group apparently came from the Norwalk area and he was in that division with ranks from private to Colonal. After the war, he also served as Sheriff of Huron county about 1870. What names are you looking for? **** The name I am looking for is *John Hart*. Let me give a bit of background if I may. I was given a picture of my Great great Grandfather, and Grandmother about 2 years ago. My GGGrandfather and GGGrandmother are each holding a child. The older child is my GGrandmother -- we know that she was born in 1858, and appears [not entirely certain] that she is about 3 years old. That would of course make the year 1861-1862 [roughly]. In this picture the man appears to be wearing some type of war uniform. Dark coat, with at least one button visible.....lighter [baggie] pants. What is interesting about this man as well is that I am told he was a Cherokee Indian....that isn't confirmed -- and finding any record of him is like finding a needle in a haystack. Last night...reading my childs history book -- I came acrossed the fact that there was an "Ohio Army"....which of course lead me to another possible lead in learning more about him. I can't even say that he was in the military, and I am only suggesting that he *might of been* :-). So! thats where I am at in regards to the question I asked. Any further help would be appreciated -- and thanks for the information that has been sent! --Sharon
Tom, Do you by chance have any information about Henry Opfer from Ohio 55th that mustered (?sp) out of Norwalk? He is my gggrandfather. Any info will be appreciated. Hi Sharon, You can find a bit of Ohio National Guard information at: http://www.oh-tagnet.com One of the places to write is the State Library of Ohio and their Genealogy section. The State Library is moving and both areas will be closed from Dec. 1, 2000 to Feb. 1, 2001, so you will want to try the other possibilities first. On the subject of Ohio counties, and their origins, the following OHGenWeb link will give the year, the parent counties, and the county seat. The page also gives info on when various vital records were recorded. You will find that Tiffin is located on the line between Hopewell and Clinton Twp. in Seneca Co. Go to the following link. < <Old map of Seneca county I have the following information in a notebook of mine. I am ashamed to say I cannot identify the source but as it may prove helpful to you I will send it also. Seneca Co. was created in 1820 from land originally belonging to Huron Co. Huron Co. was created in 1815 from land originally belonging to Portage and Cuyahoga counties. Hope it helps. Denise
I am looking for information on a my gr. grandmother Abbie Stevens. Abbie was born in 1840 in Ohio "near Tiffin". This has been a most difficult line for my research. Even in visiting the city of Tiffin, Ohio I found nothing. The family had at least two children. The older was Melissa, and the younger sister was 'Abbie', possibly Abagail on birth records. I know positively that these two are sisters. I believe there was a brother named Henry. I have a mention in some papers of an "Uncle Hank" who was a Civil war soldier as a young man. The also may be a Joel and one more brother. I have absolutely nothing on the parents. Melissa, spelled with two l's and/or two s's , went to Wisconsin to live. I do not know if she married there, or was married in Ohio. She married a Garry L. Judson. After a couple years, Abbie traveled to join her sister in Wausau. She left by train to Madison, and then on farther in a stage coach to Wausau. She was married there to Peter B. McKellar. I believe a family named Davis was related to them, but have no idea how. I have some photos, some of Davis and names, and others have no names on them. I also wondered if anyone knew the different counties that Tiffin was located in, from say 1838 to present. Was it part of Huron Co. at one time. This might prove valuable to me in this search. I have had this data for what seems like 20 years and this last line has proven the hardest for me. If anyone could help me out in this search I would greatly appreciated it. Thank You, Nelson Porter nporter@tir.com
Sharon, et al, Connecticut was the Nutmeg State until redesignated in 1959 as the Constitution State. Since it was the Nutmeg State naturally it citizens would be known as Nutmeggers. They also made and sold wooden nutmegs, hence the State Name. Hope this helps, D. My name is Sharon Sandoval, and I am looking into some family history in Huron County, mainly in the township of Lyme. To the Listers, Thank all of you who have voiced your concerns, in addition to your well wishes, over my semi-retirement. It is very kind of you. However, I must hasten to assure everyone that I am feeling just fine, and doing well healthwise. I'm exercising daily, seeking out the footpaths and trails of my forebears in England and Wales, and eating more dessert than I should. Like many others in the general population (including Bill Bradley), I very occasionally experience a hitch in my cardiac git-along, which quickly gets sorted out with the proper medication. A recent brief episode made me consider that perhaps I should ease up a bit in my daily activities, including the time I spend on look ups. I don't know if there's a cause and effect here, but thought it might be a good idea nevertheless. So I don't consider this by any means a divorce from HCC/OGS----just a trial separation. Thanks again for your thoughts. Regards, Ken Shute (kwsroots@aol.com) P.S. I was happy to see some of you jumping into the volunteer look up pool to help out. Hope others will follow your lead and and jump in also!
