    1. [OHHURON-L] Surname Ward
    2. Richard C. Robbins
    3. Hello and greetings from Rochester New York. I am originally from Sandusky and Hancock County's OH Surnames that are in my family background being. Robbins, Miller, Fisher, Snider, Norton and Ward. I have been searching all over in Maine for more information regarding my GG Grandparents. Abigail J.Norton and Danial B. Ward. The 1850 US census has them living in Dresden Maine. My G Grandfather Zachariah Ward (their Son)is listed as being 10 years old in 1850. Zachariah's military service record lists him as enlisting with 20th Maine in Woolwitch Maine Aug 6th 1862 and upon being discharged, having moved to Wood County OH Talk about a small world. I signed up at the local high school here in Rochester for a evening genealogy course. The instructor indicated that he was originally from Norwalk Ohio. When I mentioned my Ohio Ward connection he said he remembers that there were a host of Wards in Huron County. When I got home, I remembered that previous information supplied by BGSU, said that my Grandfather Lewis Adam Ward was born in Norwalk Ohio. As I always wondered why Zachariah came to Ohio after the Civil War, and remembering that Lewis Adam Ward (Zachariah's Son) was born in Norwalk (Huron County).I went to the Huron County Genealogy page on the net.Huron County has an excellent page. They have even cataloged everyone buried in the county. After scrolling through a lot of names, Lo and Behold, there was Abigail Jones (Norton) Ward and Danial Brown Ward originally from Maine. There being so many Wards listed, now I wonder if perhaps more Wards from Maine came to Ohio during the civil war. Has anybody further information regarding the Wards from Huron County ? How do I determine what cemetery's to look for, that I might locate their graves ? I have much information on this Ward line , that I would be glad to share. Richard Robbins Rochester, NY

    3. My Courtright family is a major brick wall for me. My John Courtright & Mary Clark were married 1797 in Sussex Co., NJ. There has been a lot of research on this family in early NY/NJ. I know all the earliest history of this family but need my missing link to connect to the main line. In the Minisink area of NJ there were many Courtrights, Deckers, Westfalls & Clarks. They can be found on almost every page of the Reformed Dutch church records. I know all abt Solomon Courtright who died 1844 in Peru, Huron Co., OH. However he doesn't seem to be closely related to my John. At least I know he's not a sibling or parent & so of no help in my research. By 1800 John & Mary moved to Beaver Co., PA (near Pittsburgh), then across into Columbiana Co., OH in 1818. John was last in Jefferson Co., OH in 1830 as was his oldest son Jacob V. Courtwright. However by 1850 Jacob moved to Norwich Twp., Huron Co. His neighbors being Simon Westfall his wife Esther Brink & their daughter Jane Westfall who was married to Peter G. Decker, & their children James & Cornelia Decker. Most of Jacobs children seem to have moved over to Venice Twp., Seneca Co., OH, as well as James Decker. However Jacob's nephew James Courtwright (s/o Isaac) moved to Huron between 1901-1909 along w/ his wife Barbara Cook. To complicate matters further their daughter Martha , b. 12/12/1878 -1944, married Grant W. Courtright c1893. Now Grant was the s/o Harmon B. Courtright but I have no idea who he was!? If anyone knows of these families I would love to share information. Thanks, Cindy Cindy Torres Owens cindyo@va.prestige.net http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/o/w/e/Cindy-L-Owens/index.html

    3. Hi again Ken, I didn't realize you didn't live in New London. Sorry about that, and thank you so much for all the information. This mail with the explanation came in after the picture you sent me personally. Now with a birth date for Martin, I have been able to tie him to Jonas Motter from the 1850 Ruggles Twp. Census. This is really great. Thank you so much. Jonas is the brother to our Balser Motter. If there is someone on the list that may know the building in New London I'm talking about, it's not the house of Martin's, but the VFW hall is in there now, that's the one I would like to know which Motter owned. It is close to the railroad tracks, I remember that. It's terribly run down, but has so much charm, I hope someone will refurbish it. I love places like this. We just don't have that many really old buildings out here in the Wild West. Ken, I'll send you a photo as an attachment, wish I could send it to the list, but know I can't, so if anyone else is interested I'll send them one personally. Thanks again, Myrna Singer Casey

    2. Re: 1. History of the old house located behind the grocery store in New London. Re: 2. Brick building with name MOTTER in New London. Re: 3. Location of Gregory House in terms of present day New London. For Maureen, Myrna and Nancy. Perhaps I should have mentioned earlier, but since I live in Maryland about 400 or so miles from New London Twp, which I've never visited, I must admit to distance-impairment which gives me no first hand knowlege of the past and current structures, streets and general layout of New London. All; I know is what I read in our Huron County, Ohio publications. Re item 1. I'm afraid I have no idea regarding the "old house located behind the grocery store in New London." Re item 3. Our History of the Fire Lands describes the Gregory House as being built on the northeast corner of Rochester and Clarksfield Streets in New London in 1873. I find this intersection in our Atlases of 1873 and 1891 for New London, not far from where the C.C.C. & I. RR crosses Clarksfield Street. Our Huron County, Ohio, A Pictorial History, shows a picture of the west wall of the Gregory House being built facing North Main Street. Possibly, one or more of these earlier named streets was renamed, but again, I don't know what's currently standing at this location. Re item 2. In our Picturesque Huron County, Ohio, 1896, there is a picture of the residence of a Martin Motter in New London, page 194. It is a large two-story brick building. The caption reads: "Residence of M(artin) Motter, Rochester Street, New London. (A smaller version of this same picture is seen on page 69 with the caption: "Residence of Martin Motter, New London.") Since copyright restrictions do not apply here, I'll send you (Myrna) a private copy of the residence seen on page 194 as an attachment to a follow up email. You can then compare with your picture of the brick building that contains the name "Motter." In our Atlas of 1873, Huron County, Ohio, Martin Motter is listed in the business directory as: "Martin Motter, Proprieter of St. James Hotel, opposite depot (of the C.C.C.& I. RR.). This house is large and newly furnished. Good sample rooms on first floor." The St. James Hotel must have ben located fairly close to the Gregory House since the picture in our Huron County, Ohio Pictorial History, showing workmen working on the construction of the Gregory House in 1873, contains as part of the caption: :The large building on the right is the old St. James Hotel, which was built in 1871." In our Atlas of 1891, Huron County, Ohio, Martin Motter is shown owning a plot of land (#443) in New London, facing Rochester Street, with a large tract of land behind this plot and plots 444-451. There are 17 Motters listed in the index for the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book, including Martin Motter. Details for the latter: Grove Street Cemetery, New London Township. Page 433. Section 2-- Row 23. 5 Martin Motter 1846-1897. 6 Dollie Motter, d/o M. & L. Motter, d. (10) June1888 age 1(0)m 24d. Hope some of this may help. Happy Easter to all. Regards, Ken Shute

    3. Hi Ken, I just can't resist asking about another building I saw last June when I was fortunate enough to be able to come back there and do some research. I was only able to come up to New London from Ashland on our last day of vacation, so couldn't do any further research, but I'm interested in the brick building that is on the same street as you would drive on from the south (Ruggles/Nova area) entering town. I'm sure it would be on the N.E. side, and it's very old, but at the top it has in bricks the name "MOTTER". The IOOF, I believe, is headquartered in the building. I've asked Tom Neel, and he offered to try to find it when he has time, but I thought perhaps since your very knowledgeable on the historical areas, maybe you or someone else on the list may know the background on this building. It is in the first block past the East/West main street of town I believe. I do have a photo of it if needed. Such a charming place. Sure wish I would of had more time to check it out. I have Motter's in my ancestry from this area, so was curious if it may of been one of them who owned the building. Thank you so much. The book sounds interesting. One more I will try to get from Inner Library Loan. Myrna from WA

Laborers and bricklayers work on building the west wall of the structure, facing North Main Street. The large building on the right is the old St. James Hotel, which was built in 1871. (Photo courtesy of of Vaughn Neel)." At this point, maybe your best bet would be to go back to Tom Neel to see if he might be aware of any other background details on the Gregory House/ New London Inn/ Union Block. I'd be happy to furnish you a copy of the photo on page 81 by email attachment separately, but I'm afraid I'm put off by the copyright restriction. Perhaps you could see if you could get an interlibrary loan of the book in which it is contained. Regards, Ken Shute
