Maureen, The following article appeared in the Lyme Lines, Vol. 12, No. 2, Feb. 1985, page 4. Lyme Lines is the newsletter of Lyme Village, a complex of historical buildings near Bellevue in northwestern Huron County. "FORMER NEW LONDON HOTEL ADDED TO NATIONAL REGISTER RECENTLY The Gregory House in New London was added to the National Register of Historic Places during 1984. Located at 1 East Main Street, the large, three story brick building was built in 1873 after a fire destroyed the original frame building, known as the American House, the preceding year. Albert A. Powers was given the contract for putting up the new structure. Albert Perkins, with a team of horses, hauled the yellow brick from a kiln on the Huron-Ashland County Line Road. One of the workers who wheeled the brick and mud for the walls was the father of Jay F. Laning, who later became a Congressman. When the building was completed, the upper two stories were used as the Gregory Hotel. The proprietors were C.W. Gregory and Mr. Van Horn, who gave a party to celebrate the opening of their new hotel and the New Year of 1874. The ground floor contained a dry goods store. In 1875, since there was no fresh produce for sale nearby, the Gregory House had its own garden. For a number of years the structure was known as the White Hotel, which was not always open. In July, 1902 the local post office was moved into the first floor corner room. In 1908 some of the crumbling foundation stones were replaced and the foundation generally repaired. During the 1970's, the second floor of the former Gregory House was made over into apartments. The Inn restaurant, Larry's Sports Shop, a laundromat and a dry cleaning establishment occupied the ground floor until recently. From 1828, when the Holiday family came to Kingsley's Corner, as New London was known in early times, there has been a tavern on the northeast corner of Clarksfield and Rochester Streets, now known as North Main and East Main Streets. It is said that Lorton Holiday started to erect a hotel, or tavern, on the site; that Peter Holiday finished it and then hired Lorton to manage it for him. It faced the west and is referred to in old deeds as "Holidays Tavern." This original structure may have been built of logs. During the period encompassing the Civil War, a frame building was erected on the site and this was known as the American House. This is the building that burned during the wee morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 17, 1872. A fire of unknown origin broke out in Dr. McClellan's store on the north side of Rochester Street and every building in the entire block, all being built of frame construction, were destroyed. The lower floor of the hotel had contained Gregory and Van Horn's dry goods store, Dr. Rawson's dental office and the post office. There were living quarters on the second floor. New London is admittedly out of the usual range of the "Lyme Lines," but we are always pleased to learn of any Huron County structure being admitted to the prestigious list known as the National Register of Historic Places. The Gregory House has had a long and colorful existence and we hope it will stand for many long years to come. --- Information from the History of New London, Ohio, by Helen R. Foskett." The above article was dated 1985. The New London Inn and the other businesses in the old Gregory House building closed or moved to other locations in town. The late Barney Thomas, a former mayor of New London, started the Box Office Restaurant in the building. Much exterior and interior work was done to renovate the building along its original lines. Although the restaurant was well publicized in area newspapers, and they ran advertisement in Ohio Magazine and elsewhere, the customers did not come, and the restaurant went under, so to speak. Barney prepared a nice booklet on the history of the Gregory House corner which was given to the New London Area Historical Society. We (the Historical Society) moved our museum to the former News Centre location just east of the Gregory House about April 1st. We are still unpacking and I couldn't quite put my hands on the Gregory House story. It will be some months before we get everything organized again. About two years ago, a local restaurant, "J Patrick's" moved into the Gregory House building, and they are becoming quite popular, bringing many visitors into town to eat dinner. There are several apartments on the second floor of the building. I think the third floor still needs quite a bit of work although I see lights up there from time to time. As a side note, the construction photograph of the Gregory House in 1873, after the fire had leveled the block the year before, was owned by Mrs. Andrew Snyder east of New London. I'm not certain who has it now. My father copied it nearly 20 years ago and it has appeared in various publications. This is the earliest photograph we have of downtown New London to our knowledge. No view of the village has been located previous to the 1872 fire, although it is quite probable that photographs were taken. Norwalk, for example, has photographs that date to the 1850's. If any of you out in computer land have pre-1872 New London store building photographs in your family album and didn't realize that nobody here in New London had any, please send copies! Since none of us know what to look for, we would have to identify them by the store signs. I hope this gives a little bit of history to answer your inquiry about the Gregory House. I'm sorry that I could not reply sooner. In a message dated 4/19/01 6:24:28 PM Eastern Daylight Time, coh55@dmci.net writes: << Subj: Phillips in Huron Co., Ohio Date: 4/19/01 6:24:28 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: coh55@dmci.net (Charles Harthy) To: kwsroots@aol.com Dear Mr. Shute, I noticed that you have answered a number of Phillips family queries for Huron Co., Ohio. I am related to the Phillips family through Andsell whose widow is buried in the Boughton Cemetery (P.709 of the Huron Co. Cemetery Inscriptions Publications). As a matter of information, Andsell is buried in an unmarked grave in the Cedar Creek Cemetery, Hope Twp., Barry Co., MI. He died while visiting relatives in the area. My question is as to Andsell's ancestry - is he related to Ezekiel, the pioneer? Also, are the other Phillips in that cemetery related? Any suggestions or assistance is appreciated. Charles O. Harthy coh55@dmci.net >> Hi Charles, In checking our Huron County, Ohio publications it appears that there was the Ezekial Phillips family living in Hartland Twp, and the Andsell Phillips family (apparently) living in Norwich Twp. I was unable to find a definite connection between these two families. The Andsell Phillips Family: In our Cemetery Inscriptions book we find, on page 710, Boughton Cemetery, Norwich Twp: Mercy Phillips, w/o Andsell Phillips, d. 22 Dec 1854 age 68y 9m. Also on page 710, same cemetery: Section A-- Row 6. 6 Ruth Phillips, d/o L. & E. Phillips, d. 1 Jul 1839 age 16d. 7 John Phillips, d. 27 Feb 1844 age 44y 8m 13d. Electa, w/o John Phillips, d. 3 Aug 1843 age 37y 9m 1d. The foregoing named Phillips members could very well be related to Andsell & Mercy Phillips, based on the proximity of their burial locations, but I could find nothing else to confirm this. Our Early Estate Index of Huron County, Ohio Court Records, 1812-1852, lists a John Phillips, Estate, Dec 1844. Sources: Probate Docket #1; p. 222. Common Pleas Journal #8, p. 119. Packet (original papers which still exist). If this John Phillips is the same as the John Phillips listed on page 710 of the Cemetery Inscriptions book, and if you could obtain these documents, it might shed further light on the relationship between John and Andsell. Ancestry.com gives the pedigree for an Ansel Foster Phillips, going back to Ansel (Andsell) Phillips and Mercy Draper. Ansel Foster Phillips was b. 10 Oct 1869 in Huon County, Ohio. He d. 30 Jun 1927 in Rutland Twp, Barry County, Michigan (the same county you mentioned where Andsell Phillips was buried while visiting relatives in the area). Ansel Foster Phillips m. Margaret Alvira Smith. Parents of Ansel Foster were Alvin Eugene Phillips and Delia Gertrude Snyder. Parents of Alvin Eugene were Nathaniel Phillips and Nancy Ann Deyos. Parents of Nathaniel were Ansel (Andsell) Phillips and Mercy Draper. Ancestry.com also gives the following under War of 1812 Service Records: Andsell Phillips, Batt'n Light Inf., New York Mil. Rank at Induction: Fifer. Rank at Discharge: Fifer. The Ezekial Phillips Family. Ezekial and Maria Smith Phillips had nine children, five of whom were still living in 1879. Of the nine children, the daughters' names included Alma, Abi, Harriet, Amy, Almira, and Dorcas; the sons' names included Phriend and Canarius (the yougest). In our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, we read that Ezekial Phillips came to Hartland Twp from Ontario County, NY in 1830. He died in Hartland in July 1856. His widow (Maria) lived with her son-in-law Parley K. Post. She died Oct. 1, 1877 at age 87. Five of their nine children were still living in 1879: Mrs. Post (Amy) in Hartland; Mrs. Hoppock (Alma) and Mrs. Burgess (Almira) in Wisconsin; Mrs. John Clawson (Dorcas) in Clarksfield (Twp?); and C.N. in Michigan. In Henry Timman's Just Like Old Times (JLOT), Book 3, Page 60 we find an article that mentions the triple wedding of Alma, Abi, and Harriet Phillips on Sept. 4, 1837. They were the chldren of Ezekial and Maria Phillips who settled in 1830 at the "Hartland Five Points" in Hartland Twp. Alma married Daniel D. Hoppock, Abi married Robert Gribben, and Harriet married Eben Stone. Abi died a year after her marriage at age 23 and is buried with her parents. The Hoppocks later moved to Wisconsin. Also In JLOT, Book 4, Page 32, there is mention of the youngest son of Ezekial and Maria Phillips named Canarius. He came to Hartland Twp from Greene County, NY in 1831. He joined many other settlers of the area in the 1849 gold rush in California. He married Alzina James of Hartland Ridge. They had no children. Canarius died in 1909. Our Cemetery Inscriptions book lists the following in Five Points Cemetery (also known as the Phillips Cemetery) in Hartland Twp. Page 190. 6 Abi Gribben, w/o Robert Gribben, d/o Ezekial & Mariah Phillips, d. 1 Jul 1838 age 23y 4m 18d. 7 George W. I don't know how much of the above you already have, but maybe it can serve as a famework for further research as to whether there's any connection or not between the two families. Regards, Ken Shute
Charles Edward and Mary Ann (Snow) Erswell came to the United States about 1834. Story is that the captain believed Maria to have died on board ship. But her mother would not throw her overboard and then she recovered. Clara Betsey Erswell was born in 1835 at the port of entry, New York City.(Time frame works). The 1840 US Census lists Charles Erswell. In his household are one male 30 and under 40; one male under 5 (Charles, the oldest son); females one 30 and under 40 (Mary Ann Snow); and three 5 and under 10 (Lorah or Sarah, Maria, and Betsey, perhaps) and two under five (Eliza and ?). Mary Ann (Snow) Erswell died 27 May 1849 in North Royalton, Cuyahoga County Ohio. There is a grave stone marked as follows: Mary Ann Wife of C. There is an Agatha Hipp in my Grandmother's family also and I was wondering if she may be the same person, also if the Meyer she married is related to my grandfather. Thank you for your time. Michelle Posner
Hi Nancy Thanks ever so much for your reply and your gracious offer to do a cemetery lookup for me. Yes, the lookup of all the Wards listed in the Ward Cemetery would be a most lengthy undertaking All of them I'm sure are my relation, But, the only Wards that I am interested in as of now, being; Denial Brown Ward, 608 (my GG Grandfather) Abigail Jones Norton Ward 608 (his wife and my GG Grandmother) D. M. 10 (possibly David Ward ?, my Daniels Father, Uncle or Brother) David Ward is listed as being the first Ward to come to Fitchville, Huron County in the late 1700's and having Son's Austin and Samuel. (but no Daniel) My dilemma being where does my Daniel Brown Ward fit in. I have records of his birth as being in 1806 Sagadahoc County, Maine and his Father being James Ward and Mother Ruth Brown. The Huron County cemetery listings show three James Ward. James L 636 James M 11 James Paul 444 Could any of these James's be my Daniels Father ? Once the link to the Huron County Wards can be established, I would most certainly want to buy the book that you recommend. If you could provide me any help with any of the six names, I would be greatly indebted. Richard Robbins

BUT......there are two columns of WARDs listed in index.....can't possibly do all of them. If you have a couple of first names, then I can go ahead and look them up for you. Also, another consideration........if you have a lot of people in Huron Co. you might want to invest in the cemetery book. It's the best one I've ever seen! Completely indexed and so are the cemeteries. A great buy!!! Go to Huron Web page and you can find it there.........Nancy > > > ==== OHHURON Mailing List ==== > Enjoy your stay in Huron County, OH > If you feel you must unsubscribe from the list mode > send the word 'unsubscribe' to OHHURON-L-request@rootsweb.com >

I also went to the LDS site and it said that it only contains about 70% of the records from that time period and that it wouldn't be totally up and running for another month. Hopefully, within that 70% all of our families will be listed!
Yesterday evening's local news here described a web site announcing the soon to be completed American Family Immigration History Center at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, and accessible via the internet. The web site is: ellisislandrecords.org. The data base will contain immigration records of 17 million people who immigrated through the port of New York, 1892-1924, "the peak years of Ellis Island processing." (Just my luck--- my parents arrived at Ellis Island from England a year later, in 1925). Among other information, the data base will include name of immigrant and ship, port of origin, arrival date, age, marital status, nationality, and last residence (town and country). A nominal fee will also buy a scanned reproduction of the original ship's manifest containing the entry, and a picture of the ship on which the immigrant arrived. Regards, Ken Shute
This was sent from another list that I am on. For those of us that are experiencing a frigid April, read on and see that it is not as bad as in 1816! Decatur County Journal June 9, l892 The year without a summer, l8l6, is now being quite generally recalled. According to the records, January and February of that year were warm and spring like, March was cold and stormy. Vegetation had gotten well along in April when real winter set in. Sleet and snow fell on seventeen different days in May. In June there was either frost or snow every night but three. The snow was five inches deep for several days in succession in the interior of New York and from ten inches to three feet in Vermont and Maine. July was cold and frosty, ice formed as thick as window panes in every one of the New England States. August was still worse; ice formed nearly an inch in thickness, and killed nearly every green thing in the United States and in Europe. In the spring of l8l7, corn, which had been kept over from the crop of l8l5, sold for from $5 to $l0 a bushel, the buyers purchasing for seed. We had other cold summers, but none that have equaled l8l6 in that respect. On May l0, l835, snow fell to the depth of a foot in Jamestown, Va., and was piled up in huge drifts in most of the northern states. There was snow in many parts of Iowa and Illinois on May ll, l878, and again as late as May 2l, l882. Bur-r-r-r-r! Mary McG in Tennessee May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks, May your heart be light as a song. May each day bring you bright happy hours, That stay with you all year long.
