    3. This morning I awoke and said to myself, "I remember a Spurling from town. Don Spurling; he's a barbershop quartet singer." Small world? Then, I recalled that where I once lived in Coldwater, Michigan, there was a department store called Spurling. A good sleep does wonders for the brain. 1. RE: [OHHURON-L] Spurling, Henretty, Shumer
    2. No, since the census enumerates by NAMES, Children's Home will be there but not indexed as such. Your best bet is to try a reverse look-up. In order to do this, you need to know the address at the time of the census. They release one every decade and it's a b-I-g thrill to genealogists. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 02, 2003 9:07 PM Subject: Re: [OHHURON-L] Spurling, Henretty, Shumer > In a message dated 11/2/2003 6:21:38 PM US Mountain Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > Oh, the Shirley Temple dress story breaks your heart! 3. Thanks, Dianne. I don't think the ones from St Paul's Catholic Cemetery are mine but I'm sure I'm connected to most of the ones from Woodlawn Cemetery. I found some obituaries last night in the Cleveland Necrology File at http://www.cpl.org/linkslibrary.asp?FormMode=DBSubCategory&ID=178&CatID=3 From them I learned that James A. BROOKER (founder of the Brooker Brothers Forging Co. in Norwalk) and his wife Kate E. BROOKER were the parents of James F, Ernest A, Arthur and Russell. Are the other Brookers on the same pages (Carol, Henry, Baby Boy and Freda) likely to be buried with my Brookers (and therefore related) or are they just on the same page because the book is sorted by surname? Carol could be Ernie's wife but I haven't come across the names Henry or Freda before. I assume "USNR" stands for United States Naval Reserve, but what does "CCARP" stand for? Thanks again. You've been a big help. - Wayne On Sun, 2 Nov 2003 15:53:43 -0500, you wrote: >Wayne, >Here is the info you requested. Hope it helps in your research. > >Sincerely, >Dianne L. 1. [OHHURON-L] Huron children's home & loving families at Christmas
    2. Hello list, me again, I thought I'd take another chance on someone knowing something. But didn't feel this needed to be in with a name search. To start, my mother spent part of her early years in the children's home. ( born in 1934, and left OH somewhere between 1939 and 1944) She wasn't bad, but I think she was neglected. So her and sisters(or maybe just one) had to go there. She remembers being taken in at Christmas time by a couple (or family) that would let them write their christmas wish list on a piece of paper and then burn it and send it up the chimney. Magically her wish was there waiting for her on Christmas when she woke! She asked for a play iron, ironing board and doll. Wow....... that story really touched my heart! She just told me this today. I wondered if any of you heard of a family that did this? She doesn't know their name. Remember the time frame: 1934, and left OH somewhere between 1939 and 1944 Unfortunately, when she went back to the children's home......her things disappeared. So did the matching "Shirley Temple" dresses that her and her sister had. She remembers seeing other kids wearing her dress at the children's home. My mother has a book to write(in her head)........I just wish she would! You know, out of sad and poor times, came the most wonderful mother! Inspite of her up bringing, she became a great lady! And so did her sister(s)! Thanks so much, Jackie

I understand you're offering to do lookups in the "Cemetery Inscriptions of Huron County, Ohio" book. I was wondering if you could help me with my BROOKER research? My great-great-grandmother was Kate Louisa BROOKER. She was born Aug 7, 1868 in Dalston, London, England to Henry James BROOKER and Amelia BROOKER (née GARDNER). Kate had a brother Jim who had a son, also named Jim, who moved to Ohio. I believe Jim senior stayed in England but I'm not certain. Jim junior married a Kate. They had several children, including Ernie, Arthur and Russell. I believe Ernie's wife's name was Carol, and either Arthur or Russell was married to a Dorothy. My 80-year-old great-aunt has the following address for Russell: Russ Brooker South Norwalk Rd. RD3 Norwalk, Ohio This address was given to my great-aunt many years ago. I don't know when Russell last lived there. Today I found the following record in the Social Security Death Index: Russell E BROOKER, born Aug 17, 1918, died Sep 6, 1992, last residence 44857 (Norwalk, Huron, OH), SSN 272-10-7919. I can't be certain but I think this is probably my Russell BROOKER. I then found the "USGenWeb Archives for Huron County, Ohio" web site, and in the cemeteries index, found the following: BROOKER ARTHUR L, 667 BABY BOY, 667 CAROL, 667 CAROL S, 659 ELIZABETH, 533 ERNEST A, 659, 660, 667 FREDA M, 667 HENRY, 659, 667 JAMES A, 660, 667 JAMES F, 660, 667 KATE E, 660, 665, 668 MARY E STUTZMAN, 515 RUSSELL, 668 BROOKER MONUMENT, 659 Could you please tell me what the book says about these BROOKERs? As you can see, all of the names I've mentioned are listed here except for Dorothy, so I'm hopeful that these BROOKERs are indeed my relatives. I'm also curious about the BROOKER monument on page 659. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. - Wayne Garvin Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
