    3. Hi Doug, How goes it!! This has happened to me also, only a bit different. I gave all the information to a cousin, she passed it on to another "List member", and they posted it. Much of it is so wrong, but the sad part is my cousin got the credit for it!! No mention that I gave it to her, I beat the pavement, gathered all the info, interviewed the families, got the photo's and got nothing in return, not that I asked but one good trun deserves another I think. I even asked the gal that posted it for a picture to the one that connects to my family, but it's like she never heard of me. And we have exchanged a few emails. Now I am tight with who I give information to, and photo's. I have been more than generous with any one who is willing to trade, but the end has come. By the way Doug, is this the family that you and I seek?? Learned the hard way. 3. To Andrew Waber, Thank you Sir, it is always nice to see the "rest of the story" as a famous radio and television personality would say. It's too bad it has led to a public forum instead of a resolution on the more private side. Take care and thanks for the insight. Raymond Tompkins ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Waber" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 04, 2004 5:50 PM Subject: [OHHURON-L] I am the culprit > > Hello, > > One of you guys asked Doug to name the person he's referring to. It's me. But before I see any more character assasination let me explain the situation to all of you. First of all, in regards to my crap-tacular website I don't see what the big deal is. This is a crappy little website I put together myself but if anyone were to examine the website further you'd relaize I have my sources cited. Doug you didn't do any of the research so how can you copyright it? All I got from you that was YOUR research was a book "Germans to America" which lists Matthias and an obit. The info in these I already had! Mary Carabin did the research for the naturalization record I have and I have several obits, some done by Mary and I believe I found one off of the RB Hayes library site. > > In regards to the researcher as God as my witness I never agreed to this man because there was no way in heck I'd be able to afford him. Doug knows that. The man mistakened Doug's intentions and went ahead and did the research anyways. He jumped the gun and paid $250 even though the researcher told him it was optional. I told him that I would try to solicit some contributions from my relatives and I sincerely thought they'd be willing to help. I thought I made this clear to Doug, or at least I tried. It turns out none of my relatives (except Roger Brunn) wanted to contribute. So shortchanged, I told Doug that I would try to contribute 100 of the 150 dollars but it would be a while. He told me never mind I dont need to pay him anything. So... I still felt bad and in December when I had money from the sale of my books, I wanted to start paying into the remaining $75 (Roger paid $25) but he never returned my email in which I asked him for his address. > > There I said my side of the story it was never in my intentions to "rip him off" but it also was never in my intentions to hire a researcher for $150 much less $250. > > > --Andrew > > > ==== OHHURON Mailing List ==== > You want to see what other mail lists are available? 1. Re: [OHHURON-L] Question - Posting Info On-line without Permission?
    2. Hi Doug: I am so sorry to hear what happened to you regarding someone posting the information you paid for. I think you have every right to be unhappy about it, but one thing is for sure - most of the information available publicly cannot be claimed by any one person. I do a lot of research. I am happy to share with people if they pay or not. Some information I keep between the a special group of people who help me by donating money ahead of time. We all benefit, they get a sweet deal because I am the one doing the research, and it's a plus for me because I get some help with expenses and I enjoy it immensely. Information as you know is becoming more and more expensive. Ask for donations ahead of time and keep a tally of who sends what. Share the information but request they add your name on their research notes "as researcher who provided the information". I would rather be sure of the source than as one respondent mentioned getting it from the internet where people cut and paste so they will have the "biggest and best", and sometimes the WORST (incorrect) info. My grandpa had a saying that I think is appropriate here. It's one you really have to think on - and some people may not get - EVER. "What you give away you keep What you keep you loose." Remember - when you cast your bread upon the waters it comes back to you three-fold. I hope these suggestions aren't more than you asked for. Sue

    3. Doug, Your first mistake was giving the guy the information prior to collecting his debt. You were being nice and sometimes nice is not returned. In your particular case, being nice hurts. Second, it is not uncommon for a few people without scruples to take information, massage it, and post it as original research. It happens and it will continue to happen. When I add data to my line, I always use a footnote to identify where I found the information or identify a person who "gave" me the information. That, however, is just me. Why keep the identify of this person a secret? Post the name and email address of the culprit. That way the rest of us on this list will no NOT to share our information with him. 3. I think this is becoming more and more common. There are people out there who are not very honest and don't care. There are people who steal documents from public holdings. There will always be great discussion on what is public domain and what is not. Ask any long time genealogist how many times he has shared info, in the form of mailed packages to other researchers, and gotten zip in return. No postage reimbursement, no thank you, nada. It happens Read the articles in RootsWeb Review about the mega gedcoms on worldconnect. Come on now, does anyone have 96,452 names in their family tree? My tree of 27 years now has 7,000 give or take in it. Did the file owner do this research, or did he cut and paste from the Internet. Some people feel important to have the biggest, the best, the most. And will get it anyway they can. And to be the first to put it on line, accurate, appropriate or not. My grandparents "life story" is on line. An extremely distant relative visited my parents regarding the family. Nice visit. I then found the info on line. What a sleazy article. My grandfather was an alcoholic, my grandmother abused her children. My parent has 18 half sisters!!!!! Not one of those sentences is true. The author even got spouting religion. My parent was devastated. We have no clue where this person came up with this junk!! Letters and email to the author of this fiction of course are ignored. Rootsweb cannot do anything about it. So not only are we careful about sharing, we are careful about who we talk to and what we tell them. What a terrible way to live!!! So, having sort of been in your shoes, I have become most careful who I share with and what I share. Sometimes defeats the purpose of why we are doing this, but you just have to protect yourself and most of all live with your actions. I do both quite well. In the end, each one must decide what do I share, and what do I keep to myself? For me, if it is info that is ok to post on the front page of the USA today, then it can be shared. If I do not want it on the front page of the newspaper, it stays in my files. Experience is sometimes a tough way to learn. Just my opinion. gypsy Subject: [OHHURON-L] Question - Posting Info On-line without Permission? Hello List Members, I have a question for everyone and would like your feedback. A few days ago, I came across information that was posted on the Huron County Web site by a List Member. I hired a private German researcher last year to research a family and sent the "List Member" a copy of the results. He agreed to help with the costs of the research ahead of time, but never sent me any money. 2. Would you have sent for the information if he had not agreed to help you pay for it? If it was important to you to have the information anyway, would you have shared it with others after you recieved it? I have paid for a lot of information over the years, and travel time collecting it but if someone approaches me for information with a line that connects with mine, I try to help if I can. The bigger picture is that we are trying to connect with our families. The way things are going with the state of Ohio trying to restrict our ability to obtain birth and death and other vital records, sharing may be the only way genealogy will continue. Hopefully you will be able to post your information, for accuracy, with your name attached so that others will be able to connect with you and increase your information on your family by attaching their line. It can be very surprising to find that you have hundreds of cousins out there, like I have. Best of luck and continued success in your search~ Connie

    3. This is just my opinion, and I am not a lawyer, but this information, if it were from the United States (I know it probably is not) would be in the public domain, and when the Social Security administration sued Ancestry, trying to prevent the SSDI from being available, they lost because the courts decided, basically, that there are no privacy issues with the dead. I think this is probably the situation here. OTH, I think the person who agreed to help you with the expenses and then did not would be in breach of contract if you had signed one. But these are only my opinions, and if you really want to know you should consult a lawyer. Is it worth it? 1. [OHHURON-L] Annual Query: Edward Lafayette (Lafe) DAVIS of PA/OH 1872 - 1923
    2. JamesDavis
    3. I'm looking for information that would help identify the parents of my grandfather, Edward Lafayette (Lafe) DAVIS. According to his death certificate (information provided by my grandmother), he was born in Blanket Hill, OH on March 9, 1872 and his parents were Albert DAVIS and Mary SHELL, both born in PA. However, for the 1900 census, Lafe stated that he also was born in PA. I have not been able to locate a Blanket Hill in OH, but there is such a place in Armstrong County, PA. Lafe married Harriet SNYDER in New Haven Twp., Huron County, OH on October 14, 1896 and he died there on September 22, 1923. According to a distant cousin, who published a history of the RUBINS family in 1973, "Edward's parents died young and he was raised by foster parents." I don't know where she got that information, but Lafe's daughter and one son was still living then, so maybe one of them supplied it. I could not find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Mary and a son named Edward or Lafayette in the 1880 census soundex for PA, but did find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Sarah and a son named Lafayette, all from PA, in the 1880 census soundex for OH. They lived in Plymouth Twp., Richland County, which is only 3 miles from New Haven. They reported that Lafayette was nine, but Lafe should only have been eight when the census was taken. They also had six children younger than Lafayette, but my mother said she never heard anything about Lafe having any siblings. The members of this family from Plymouth were: Albert, 39, b. PA; Sarah, 29, b. PA; Lafayette, 9, b. PA; Laura, 7, b. PA; Lurenza, 5, b. PA; Louisa, 4, b. OH; Harry G., 3, b. OH; Bertha, 1, b. OH; and a son, 2 mo., b. OH. I have not been able to locate this family after 1880. I would greatly appreciate any information that would help confirm or refute the possible connection of Lafe to the Albert DAVIS of Plymouth or could throw some light on the identity of Lafe's parents. Thanks so much for any help. Jim Davis in Wenatchee, WA
