    2. In your cemetery book, certain people are listed as being on the same page. Does this mean they are buried in the same cemetery? Second question - Would it be possible to find more about a marriage that you have listed? - such as in which church it was performed, and any family connections? Thanks again, Jessie Deith

    3. I certainly would appreciate any information you could contribute. I have a notation in my notes that Asa Carpenter is buried in the "Houstotter Cemetery" in Ripley Twp. I am not sure where this came from. Could this help us locate the actual church? I, also, don't live anywhere near the sources. (I'm in Washington state.) Orson was born about 1807.According to his obituary he was "from York state" however from the census he was from Connecticut. So far I've not found his parents. Orson is buried in "Christian Church Cemetery" Ripley, Ohio. I'm trying to find the church that might have the old records of this church, in the hopes the marriage records might list the parents. So far there has been no reply. If you live close-by you might persue this avenue in person and get better results. (I'm in Illinois). I've asked my son to check for CARPENTERS in my grandmother's autograph book. If Asa is in there I'll let you know (you might like a photocopy) regards, Jessie Deith ______________________________

    2. Through my library, I can use Heritage Quest. On it I found some CARPENTERS in 1830 census living in Fairfield. ASA CARPENTER has with him one son under 5 , himself - between 20 and 30, one male between 70 and 80, females - one under 5 , one between 20 and 30 and one between 60 and 70. Orson and his new wife have set up there own home on a later page. There is another CARPENTER listed in Faifield that I wonder might be another brother - HARRY CARPENTER. He also is in the same age bracket and has a young family. As I find more I'll let you know, ERIC EYMAN. regards Jessie Deith

My great grandparents came over from there and with Herr Voss's help, I know about relatives all up and down the North Sea coast and onto the islands and Denmark. I started out just knowing the towns my great grandparents were born in. I communicate by e-mail and pay via us check and the mail. A better way to pay for overseas things is ikobo.com. 3. I pay a researcher in Germany $14 for each record he finds in church birth, marriage and death records. I tell him my interests and limits. If he has to pay to use records (often a $5 entry fee) I pay that because he might find nothing. I have paid him several hundred dollars over a two year period and have lots more information on my family in the 1600-1800 time range in several locations. I went to Germany and did my own research three times over a thirty year period (I always had other purposes for the trip too) and met cousins, but I would say I now have much more information from the researcher. I have been lucky and can afford the fee and I have shared it with a wide range of 1st, 2nd , 3rd and 4th cousins in the US. I have met several cousins by posting or sharing information and have stopped by to visit a few when we travel. My researcher has also directed me to free sources, and to some specialist researchers who have very inexpensive information, like a Danish census for $5. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 08, 2004 2:57 PM Subject: Re: [OHHURON-L] Thank-you for the Feedback (QUESTION) > Can I ask what anyone did to get $250.00 for research? The Huron County Reuben was born 1806, married a Martha Fisher in 1865, and was still married to her in 1880 according to the Federal census for Ripley Twp, Huron County, of that year. I could find no death date for Martha. The Reuben Stotts who married Rachel Clark was born about 1829. 3. Dear Ken, WARNING! THIS LETTER IS LONG! I cannot express enough the gratitude I have to you for taking any interest at all in this project! You have been kind over and above. I have some comments about your observations! This Reuben STOTTS thing is very difficult! How appropriate was your subject line. 1. I have found no marriage record whatsoever for Reuben and Rachel. I would love to but I cannot. Rachel Clark was 13 when William (my great grandfather) was conceived and 14 when he was born. I can find no marriage her other than one to Nathaniel Riddle a mere 2 years after the baby William was born. I never saw him listed as a STOTTS on any census records. He was listed on the 1850 census and onward until adulthood as a Riddle if I am remembering correctly. The only marriage listed in the family Bible for her is the one to Nathaniel Riddle. 2. I cannot find one single reference anywhere to substantiate a birth for any Reuben in 1829. My own aunt was the one that submitted the work to the LDS Family Group Record. She admits she had no documentation at all! She guessed and based it on the birth of Rachel. Not very accurate. She admits the same thing for the place of birth. She just "figured" that he would have been born in the same place and time as Rachel. 3. I can find no earlier marriage for Reuben STOTTS before Martha Fisher. NONE! He was 59 years old when he married her. What was he doing those years previous to that? He traveled in various counties around Ohio and bought up properties. I have found a tax record in Williams County (I believe the same Reuben) right next to Fulton County. It looks to be a straight line of about 15-20 miles along the railroad to the Clark family farm. It is easy to speculate at the point. He also bought land in Hancock county and possible in LaPorte County, Indiana where Rachel's uncles bought. At least, some Reuben did. 4. I have seen some of the pictures of the Stotts people in Huron County or from there. There is a striking resemblance between a man named Abraham Stotts and my grandfather Lee STOTTS the son of William born to Rachel and Reuben. 5. There are more than a few physical things that need to be considered. Not the least of which is the diabetes that was a contributing factor in Reuben of Huron County and my William and my own grandfather (not dead yet but suffering with it nonetheless). I am ok if you think the following is silly. They were circus performers right. Ella, the daughter of Reuben was very limber and lithe. Runs in the family very strongly. I can still at the age of 47 do things I could do as a cheerleader in school. My sister too is like a ragdoll. Not big people it seems. I am 5'. William was 5'6 according to his military records. He had auburn hair and hazel eyes. My dad has both. My dad is 5'8 or so. 6. Personality traits. Oh yes, I have looked into this as well. I am going to say some things I would not want repeated anywhere. My STOTTS people are mean. My grandpa was extremely abusive and could not control his anger. I have strong and unpleasant memories of cousins and others in the family being literally beaten by him. No thought for anything but what he thought he needed to do. That family has a real problem with uncontrollable anger and bipolar or manic problems. Very interesting. I asked a psychologist in the family (1st cousin) if there was any merit to building a family profile on such emotional and psychological things and was told that many of these problems are indeed familial and to keep researching it to see if I can find a solid paper-type link. I am going for it. Oh, by the way, he knew nothing of these things I found, only about our own grandfather. I found a story about a STOTTS guy who was institutionalized "not because he was insane,! but for him inability to control his temper"... This man was from Huron County and ended up institutionalized in FT. Wayne, Indiana.... One Stotts man through his baby up against a wall because he would not eat. One abused his son so badly that the boy hung himself... did not die but was never the same again. Just stuff like that from the fringes of the STOTTS family in Huron County. Not to mention how Reuben STOTTS Junior took the farm away from his renters just because he wanted to come back.... Unfair. Probably enough of that. Ok, just one more thing... Reuben STOTTS parents were divorced. That was Jacob STOTTS and Matilda Clarry. She claimed (I was told anyway) that he beat her and slept around. Supposedly that is in the divorce papers. I have never read them, but the info was unsolicited and volunteered. 7. Every other Reuben I found was so much older than her that is was disgusting or so much younger that it was impossible. You are right, this guy was what? 35 years older than our Rachel? Seduction? Rape? Stupidity? Who knows? The more I read and look at their pix, the more convinced I become. It is difficult be cause there seems to be no paper trail that I can really sink my teeth in. Every thing I have is circumstantial. Everything thusfar that is. Because of computer problems, I have lost many of the letters that told me these stories. Not sure if I copied them off of not before I lost them.... Need to look I guess. Do you know if there are any pix of Reuben Jr, the circus performer? I would love to compare them to my grandfather. If my hypothesis is true, they would be half brothers. I would love to see if there is a resemblance... Again, thank you so much for your interest in My STOTTS mess. I really do appreciate you. I have done my homework and am still doing it. I guess I will never be done with it! Karen Myatt PS... Where do you live? How do you pronounce your last name? My dad said he went to school with a boy by the last name of Shute there in Liberty Center, Ohio. They pronounced it shootee... with a long "e" sound on the end of it. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 11, 2004 1:03 PM Subject: [OHHURON-L] Re:Will the real Reuben STOTTS please stand? 2. Thank you for the kind offer of the CARPENTER picture., however I don't know of anyone by the names of Elfa or Lera, so don't think I can claim it. I've written to my older brother, as he often remembers something I have forgotten. Also I did a quick search on Heritage quest, which I can use through our library, but did not find them. Elfa ,the mother's name , could be a nickname. Elfrada comes to mind. It seems to me there was a popular song in my father's day that was "Sweet Alfrada" If I find a connection I'll let you know. Regards Jessie Deith

    2. My grandmother(I'm72) was born in Ohio. She had an autograph book, which I have passed on to my son. There was her grandfather ORSON CARPENTER and his brother - Asa -in it. They came from Connecticut according to the 1860 census, however Orson's obituary claimed he came from "York state". Orson was born about 1807, and Asa 2 years before, so they were of the same generation as your CARPENTER. I will ask my son to check the autograph book for any other CARPENTERs, but I do not remember a Clarissa. regards, Jessie Deith

    3. Does any one know who the parent of Clarissa Carpenter b. abt. 1815 (1850 census gives name as Clarinda age 35 b. in Mass) might have been. Clarissa married John Hopkins(b. Sep 21, 1810) Nov 8, 1848 in Huron Co., OH. She was John's second wife and they had 3 children, but I do not know who her parents were. Both are buried at Edwards Grove Cemetery in Ripley Township. This post peaked my interest.
