    1. [OHHOLMES] Jacob Shoup and Burkholder Cemetery

    3. Hello List Members, I have run into a snag in my research and hope someone can offer some help. Recently I came across the book, "Holmes County Ohio Cemeteries" and found my 4th gr. grandfather and his wife - Jacob and Rosannah SHOUP listed in the Burkholder Cemetery - Berlin Twp., along with my 3rd gr. grandfather's infant son, John and 1st wife, Lydia. An index to the book lists 2 Burkholder Cemeteries - both located on Amish farms in Berlin Twp. One is on the Paul Burkholder farm and the other on the Roy Burkholder farm. Since I live in Holmes County, my husband & I tried to find the cemetery. After locating the Paul Burkholder farm, we talked with Mrs. Burkholder. She didn't recall seeing any Shoup stones in the cemetery on her and her husband's land so she directed us to the Roy Burkholder farm. Once there, we were able to visit the cemetery which is located just off S.R. 39 east of Berlin. Unfortunately this wasn't the correct cemetery either. I came across an old letter I received from another Shoup relative about 11 years ago. The letter stated she had visited the Burkholder Cemetery located in Salt Creek Twp. where Jacob at one time owned land. I have a copy of Jacob's will that states some of his land was to be reserved for a cemetery. I've double checked the index and can't seem to find a reference to a Burkholder Cemetery in Salt Creek Twp. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance! Michele Skolmutch Big Prairie, OH

    3. Michele, I have a copy of "Cemetery Directory of the Amish Community in Eastern Holmes and Adjoining Counties in Ohio". There are 16 cemeteries listed for Salt Creek, but none include "Shoup". A map is included in the book. Do you have the location of the land Jacob owned? Perhaps with the range number, section number, etc. we can determine if there is a cemetery nearby.
