I've noticed a number of graves in the Prairie Township Cemetery marked with flags and the letters GAR. The only info that I have been able to find is that GAR is an acronym for Grand Army of the Republic and that it was a Civil War veteran's group. Has anyone heard of a Holmes County chapter of the GAR or have any other information? Scott Watson San Diego, CA
I have a picture of GAR and Families taken probably late 1800's. I don't know the extent of where the families are from in Holmes County but definitely includes the Richland Twp. area. I can identify only my g-grandfather and mother Leonard and Mary Ann Phillips Brown in the picture. The picture is a rather large JPEG file. Anyone interested should contact me and I will e-mail it to you.
