    1. [OHHOLMES] Holmes Co. - County/Cemetery Records
    2. > I'm also looking for any "early" cemetery readings for Holmes Co...anyone > know of any? Carol, You may already be familiar with the "Holmes County Ohio Cemetery Records 18-- to 19--" compiled by Marguerite and Richard H. Dickinson dated 1970. This is a typed compilation of many of the cemeteries in Holmes Co; I have used the copy at the State Library of Ohio in Cols., and I believe there are also copies at Millersburg library and the OGS library in Mansfield. The book is not indexed, though I understand that an index was prepared by someone at the OGS. Last I looked it was still not available at the SLO. RE county records- Cindy, if you are interested in birth or death records, I would highly recommend renting these films through your FHC. Many of the birth records especially are "incomplete," which makes researching on-site more difficult. For example, at one point in one of the birth volumes there are some pages with just the names of the children with no dates or parents listed. Many are just listed as "infant." Parents' names are often just shown as surname or mother's name is blank, etc., etc. Of course I had many Smiths and Youngs I was seeking, too, which tends to complicate things even more. I also found several death records ("complete" ones) which probate court couldn't find - they simply weren't indexed, but they were in fact there. Looking at the films at my own "convenience" turned up a lot more info than the onsite work. Just my two cents worth. Susan Franks Leininger

My hope in finding add'l information by visiting Holmes Co was to find "other" records possibly only available on the local level - court records, probate records, four-year enumeration of males, etc. Is this wishful thinking? Only those of you that have used the facilities there in the County can advise those of us NOT from the area whether there are untold resources in the courthouse and/or library. I'm open to any and all suggestions! Cindy Kimes
