Continue to search for any information on my grandfather, Harry Earnest Stone, b.approx. 1874-1876, killed in New Albany, Franklin County, Ohio June 7, 1910. On his marriage certificate he listed his place of birth as Holmes County, Ohio. No record has ever been found. Census records from Franklin Co. indicate that he listed his father from Pennsylvania and Mother from Ohio. Harry is said to have fought in the Spanish-American war, returned to New Albany after the war and married Alice May Williamson. He had beautiful handwriting, seemed well educated, was secretary of the New Albany, Ohio IOOF lodge, but worked as a farm hand at the time of his death. There is some thought that he may have been in trouble with the law or was running from his family. Also possible that he was born in Holmes County but changed his name or was originally some variation of "Stone" , ie Stein. A relative, now deceased, believed Harry had once said that he had shot a man in an arguement o! ver a dog, and there is a story that he once said that his parents names were Jacob and Rachael. Neither of these stories may be true. Question if he may have come from an Amish family. He had a tatto of a handclasp on his arm, the symbol of the IOOF lodge. Have one very treasured picture of Harry in a suite and derby hat. If any of this information is familiar to anyone doing research in Holmes County please contact me. Desperate for any help. Larry E. Stone [email protected]
Hi Everyone, My ancestors were early pioneers of Wayne, Stark, Lorain and Medina Counties, so we are related to many folks from those and surrounding counties -- many of whose names I don't know, because maternal names are often lost in families. I am writing to ask if any of you know of a hereditary blood disorder in your family called Hereditary Sphereocytosis. My hematologist said that 50% of my relatives probably have this disorder because it is autosomal dominant. Sometimes this disease can be silent, as it had been in my family until my mother's cousin died of it (probably of a ruptured spleen) and her son and I were diagnosed with it and had spleenectomies. Sometimes Hereditary Sphererocytosis is so subtle, it can't be seen on a regular red-blood count smear. Apparently a regular RBC smear doesn't pick it up in our in our family, but a hematologist will know what to do to be sure. My hematologist said that he recently had a patient in his seventies who had no idea that he had this blood disorder until tests picked it up. Because even those who have the more serious form of the disease can have subtle symptoms, it can be dangerous if someone has it and doesn't know it. Hereditary Sphereocytosis is characterized by small, fragile, sphere-shaped red corpuscles and most people afflicted with it are of northwestern European descent. Sometimes anemia and jaundice are obvious with this disease, but sometimes, those symptoms are subtle, even in those who have the more serious form of the disease. This has been the case in our family. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who might have this disease in their families. One reason is that my hematologist has found some mysteries associated with my form of Hereditary Sphererocytosis that I would like to compare with others who may have some of the same difficulties. Another is this could be a great way to find cousins who have so far been lost because maternal names change and we lose track of family lines. This is a relatively rare disease, so it may be a good first step in finding cousins. My family was originally from Pennsylvania before they pioneered Ohio. Samuel Roberts purchased land in Holmes Co. mid 1820's and died about 1827. His widow married in 1829 Thomas CARTER...Thomas died early 1850's and I wondered if Priscilla CARTER (formerly ROBERTS) might have been buried with Samuel.. Would like to find where Samuel and possibly Priscilla was buried. Is there any early cemetery readings for north western Holmes Co.? If so, where would I find them? Carol
I have finally indexed the book "We would Remember" by Nadine Getz, the story of the Mollet/Mullet family that arrived in Ohio (Coshocton and Holmes counties) in 1833. The Mullet family index and Surnames of associated families (over 900!!) are posted on my webpage at Family Tree Maker: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/e/m/e/Barbara-A-Emerson/index.html. Let me know if we have a match. Barb

ELIZABETH H.3 MULLET (NICHOLAS2, MULLET1) was born November 28, 1835 in Mechanic Twp, Holmes Co, OH, USA, and died April 24, 1924 in North Liberty, St Joseph Co, IN, USA. She married HENRY SHENEMAN August 28, 1860 in Holmes Co, OH, USA, son of FREDERICK SHENEMAN and ELIZABETH FRIEDLINE. He was born June 25, 1836 in Holmes Co, OH, U.S.A., and died March 4, 1914 in North Liberty, St Joseph Co, IN, USA. More About ELIZABETH H. MULLET: Census: 1880, IN, St Joseph Co, Liberty Twp, 566 Notes for HENRY SHENEMAN: "During almost half a century this sturdy old St. Joseph pioneer has resided within the county's borders, and he is therefore numbered among the honored citizens who have not only witnessed the remarkable growth and transformation of the region but have been important factors in its progress and advancement. He traces his lineage to the sturdy German race, his grandfather F.D.F. Sheneman, came from the fatherland and established his home in Pennsylvania, from whence he removed to Ohio. The original German spelling of the name was 'Schoenemann.' Henry Sheneman was born in Holmes County, Ohio, June 25, 1836, and has therefore almost passed the three quarter mark on the journey of life. In his parents' family were twelve children; eleven sons and one daughter, but only five of the number are now living, the eldest being Henry, whose name introduces this review. F.D.F is a retired farmer in North Liberty; Isaac is a farmer of Kosciusko county, Indiana; John is a retired agriculturist of Liberty Township; and Zachariah, the youngest, also resides in Liberty Township, where he is engaged in farming....Their son Henry Sheneman was reared in his native county of Holmes as a farmer and stockman, and at the early age of fourteen years he became a wage earner at five dollars a month, which munificent salary was given to his father. Thus when he reached the age of twenty-one years he had not twenty dollars to his credit, and in true pioneer style he began at the very bottom round of the ladder of life. One the 29th of August, 1860, he was united into marriage to Miss Elizabeth Mullet, and they became the parents of seven children, four sons and three daughters, and six of the number are yet living. The eldest Susanna, is the wife of Isaiah Roush, who is one of the leading farmers of Liberty Township, and they have seven children, Charles, Claude, Melvin, Milo, Mabel, Iva and Alta. Mr. Roush is a stanch Democrat in his political affiliations. Rhoda Jane is the wife of Schuyler Kane, also al farmer in Liberty Township, and their five children are Robert, Anna, Lola, Allen, and Eldon. Mrs. Kane had been previously married to Abraham Stull, by whom she had two living children, Elizabeth, the wife of John Hummel, and they have two children, Edna and Clarence, and George Henry, who resides in the state of Washington. The history of the third child, John Sheneman, will be found on another page. Washington is one of the prosperous farmers of Liberty Township. He married Miss Ella Stroup, who died leaving two children, Clyde and Vera. He erected one of the finest bank barns in the township in 1906, and is both a stockman and farmer, also belonging to the Gleaners, a farmer's insurance order. Alanzo is a prominent farmer of Madison township, and Elizabeth Ann, the youngest, is at home with her parents. Mrs. Sheneman was born in Holmes County, Ohio, November 28, 1835, her parents being Nocholas and Anna (Biddicoffer) Mullet, both natives of Switzerland. In early life they crossed the ocean to America, spending thirteen weeks on voyage. The father was then eighteen years of age, and he first established his home in New York, removing thence to Holmes County, Ohio, and there he and his wife and his father died. He became a very successful farmer and stockman, having accumulated about five hundred acres of land, and in one year sold over a thousand dollars' worth of wool. His political affiliations were with the Democracy, and both he and his wife were members of the German Reformed Church. Mr. and Mrs. Mullet became the parents of twelve children, and nine are now living are: Elizabeth, the wife of Mr. Sheneman; John, an agriculturist in Holmes County, Ohio; Anna, the widow of Michael Steel, and a resident of Liberty Township; Daniel, and agriculturalist of Whitney County, Indiana; Joseph, a resident farmer of Missouri; Samuel, engaged farmer of Holmes County, Ohio, Susie the widow of William Bell and a resident of Ohio; Thomas, who is also engaged in agriculture pursuits in Holmes County; and Abraham, the youngest, who resides in the old homestead. Mrs. Sheneman received her education in the German tongue, and after their marriage, which was celebrated in Ohio, the young couple started their journey to St. Joseph County, Indiana, where Mr. Sheneman purchased eighty acres of his present farm, on which stood a little log cabin with one door and window, and two acres of land had been partially cleared. As the years passed by and with the aid of his sons he placed the land under an excellent state of cultivation, adding thereto until he is the owner of two hundred acres all lying in Liberty Township. No state in the Union can boast of a more heroic band of pioneers than Indiana, and their privation, hardships and labors have resulted in establishing one of the foremost commonwealths in America, and one which still has greater possibilities before it. But their work is nearly complete, and soon, too soon, will the last of these sturdy pioneers be laid away, but their memory will ever be cherished by those who lived among them and appreciated their efforts. The name of Henry Sheneman is closely associated with the early history of St. Joseph County, which has been his home for many years, and throughout that long period he has been closely allied with it's upbuilding and development. He has been a life-long supporter of Democracy, and has ever been a firm friend of the public school, doing everything in his power for advancement. During the long period of thirty years he has been a member of the Masonic order, exemplifying i his ever day life its beneficent principles, and both he and his wife are members of the German Reformed Church." I'm trying to find out what county the following individuals died in. I do know that they were all buried in Tuscarawas County but it would appear, according to a researcher, that they all may not have died there. Brousing through the archives for this list, I've come across various posts making reference to the Zion Church at Winesburg. My ancestors attended this Church in Winesburg and according to information in a booklet from the 100th anniversary of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in St. Joseph Co, IN; some of these families from the Church in Winesburg must have moved to St. Joseph Co, IN, as many of the same surnames are listed in early records for the church in IN. Following is a paragraph from the 100th anniversary booklet for the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Madison Twp, St. Joseph Co, IN: "The "Evangelishe Zion's Gemeinde" of Madison Township, St. Joseph County, State of Indiana was organized on October 2, 1856 by the Rev. Philip Wagner. The newly formed congregation, consisting of about 19 families, elected Philip Marker as their delegate to the conference of the Evangelical Synod of North America then convening in Mansfield, Ohio during the closing days of October, 1856. At this conference, the congregation was officially recognized, and its organizing pastor, the Rev. Philip Wagner, was commissioned by the conference to be Zion's first pastor. Charter members were Philip Beehler, Peter Bollenbacher, John Schafer, Nichalaus Schlarb, Philip Schlarb, Jacob Schlarb, Matthias Klein, John Marker, Godfred Bernhard, Anton Albert, Peter Hoos, John Hoos, Christian Hinze, Mr. Ramsey, Jacob Getz, Mrs. K. Spohn, Philip Fries, Christian Horein, and Philip Marker. The first Zion Church, a hewn-log church, was erected in the Spring of 1857." I thought perhaps some of the subscribers to this list might be looking for some of the descendants of the families that attended the Winesburg Zion Church. Cindy Kimes
I, too, am looking for a cemetery listing for Walnut Creek twp. My gggrandmother, Catherine "Charity" Culp Holderman died there sometime after giving birth 4-16-1837 to my ggrandfather, Jacob Holderman. She was m. to John Holderman. I, very much, would like to locate where she is buried. She was Mennonite to the best of my knowledge. Your help is very much appreciated. Gwynn Hayden
Hi: Does anyone out there have a list of cemeteries in Walnut Creek Twp? My gg grandmother, MARTHA (MOOR) JENNINGS passed away in that Twp (1834-1835) and I would be interested in searching cemetery readings to see if I can find where she was buried. Thanks for any help you can give me. Dixie (Jennings) Greenwood

If one of the subscribers to the list has the Index to the 1830 Census, would they check to see if a LEWIS JENNINGS is listed for Holmes County? It'd be appreciated. Thanks, Dixie (Jennings) Greenwood

HI Cindy, My great-great-great grandfather Powel Hohmann or Homan came from Germany around 1839. He migrated to the Paint Twp. area around then. Diane Nott <<If I've read the archives for this list correctly part of Paint Twp. was in Wayne Co. That explains why my ancestors from a century ago told that Christian Horein immigrated into New York and went directlyto Wayne Co, OH, even though I've only found him in Holmes Co. (1840; the year he immigrated!) Are there other folks on this list with ancestors from Germany that immigrated ca 1840 and came to the Paint Twp. area?
