My hope in finding add'l information by visiting Holmes Co was to find "other" records possibly only available on the local level - court records, probate records, four-year enumeration of males, etc. Is this wishful thinking? Only those of you that have used the facilities there in the County can advise those of us NOT from the area whether there are untold resources in the courthouse and/or library. I'm open to any and all suggestions! Cindy Kimes

    1. [OHHOLMES] Holmes Co. - County/Cemetery Records
    2. > I'm also looking for any "early" cemetery readings for Holmes Co...anyone > know of any? Carol, You may already be familiar with the "Holmes County Ohio Cemetery Records 18-- to 19--" compiled by Marguerite and Richard H. Dickinson dated 1970. This is a typed compilation of many of the cemeteries in Holmes Co; I have used the copy at the State Library of Ohio in Cols., and I believe there are also copies at Millersburg library and the OGS library in Mansfield. The book is not indexed, though I understand that an index was prepared by someone at the OGS. Last I looked it was still not available at the SLO. RE county records- Cindy, if you are interested in birth or death records, I would highly recommend renting these films through your FHC. Many of the birth records especially are "incomplete," which makes researching on-site more difficult. For example, at one point in one of the birth volumes there are some pages with just the names of the children with no dates or parents listed. Many are just listed as "infant." Parents' names are often just shown as surname or mother's name is blank, etc., etc. Of course I had many Smiths and Youngs I was seeking, too, which tends to complicate things even more. I also found several death records ("complete" ones) which probate court couldn't find - they simply weren't indexed, but they were in fact there. Looking at the films at my own "convenience" turned up a lot more info than the onsite work. Just my two cents worth. Susan Franks Leininger

    3. I found my reference. The cemetery typescript that is in the Holmes Co. Library was done by Marguerite and Richard Dickinson in 1970. The Call No. is 977.164. I don't know how complete it is, but it is large. And it definitely contains more than the Amish cemeteries. The title is Holmes Co. Ohio Cemetery Records 18-- to 19--, but as I said before it has never, to my knowledge, been published. I have no idea how many copies there may be, but there is at least that one at the library. I don't know of any readings done on the main cemeteries of the county. I don't think they have enough volunteers to do the project. John

    3. I'm not aware of a published book, but there is a large typescript of most if not all Holmes cemetery readings dated about 1970 that is in the Holmes Co. Library. If anyone knows of any published listings, please post the info to the list as I too am interested. I don't make it to the Holmes Co. Library very often. I've been tossing around the idea of a trip to Holmes Co to do some onsite research, but one of the Holmes Co. folks wrote me privately stating the Holmes County Court House has been doing some remodeling. Doesn't sound like this would be the year to try to conduct onsite research! Could someone update us on the status of the remodeling? When do they expect to finish? How has this affected research of records? Which records have they turned over to the Society? etc. I'm guessing several others might be interested in this so could we have answers sent back to this list? Thanks. Cindy Kimes

    3. I am starting to research my family history, and I was wondering if anyone might have information to share. My 3great grandparents were Johannes Peter SCHLARB and Elisabeth ZINKON. Both were born in Germany and I thought they died in Coshocton County. They had a son named Jacob SCHLARB. I have a handwritten note from someone in my files that says Jacob was born in Winesburg. So now I am confused. I would appreciate any information. Thanks in advance. Allison Scowden Haltom

    3. Barry, The Stark County [Ohio] District Library has microfilms of all the Federal census for Ohio; and they do free look-ups. 3. Barry, I don't think either Holmes or Wayne counties carry the census records for Hamilton county as it is not in close proximity. You may have to go to your own area public library and rent the microfilm for a very nominal fee. Karen
