I found most of my early information in a book in the Millersburg Library. Arnold-Muskets to Missiles by George Irvine Arnold. (There is an address if you want to email me privately). It starts with George 1752-1835. He feels George was the son of Agnes Stoner and Daniel, son of John George & Maria Ann. But no proof then. George was at Valley Forge winter of 1777-78 with his musket. A 7th generation grandson was a missile commander. Discharged March 22, 1779. There is a lot more info there. Jacob Arnold and Catherine/Daniel Arnold and Keziah Williams/Jane Arnold and William Stahl is my line. Hi, I wonder if anyone has information on George Arnold (1752-1835) who was probably born in PA and is said to be buried in Holmes County, Ohio. My information indicates he was a Rev. War Veteran. His wifes were 1) Catherine Leatherman and 2) Eva Plumb (abt 1770-1855). This family resided for some time in Somerset Co., PA (abt 1788-1822) before he moved on to Tuscarawas Co., Oh and a year later in 1823 to Holmes Co. to live with his son Jacob (1787-1865) married to Catherine Drushel (1789-1871). My information indicates George Arnold was buried near Millersburg, OH. If you have information, please let me know. thanks. - Adam Walters

Michele, I have a copy of "Cemetery Directory of the Amish Community in Eastern Holmes and Adjoining Counties in Ohio". There are 16 cemeteries listed for Salt Creek, but none include "Shoup". A map is included in the book. Do you have the location of the land Jacob owned? Perhaps with the range number, section number, etc. we can determine if there is a cemetery nearby. Recently I came across the book, "Holmes County Ohio Cemeteries" and found my 4th gr. grandfather and his wife - Jacob and Rosannah SHOUP listed in the Burkholder Cemetery - Berlin Twp., along with my 3rd gr. grandfather's infant son, John and 1st wife, Lydia. An index to the book lists 2 Burkholder Cemeteries - both located on Amish farms in Berlin Twp. One is on the Paul Burkholder farm and the other on the Roy Burkholder farm. Since I live in Holmes County, my husband & I tried to find the cemetery. After locating the Paul Burkholder farm, we talked with Mrs. Burkholder. She didn't recall seeing any Shoup stones in the cemetery on her and her husband's land so she directed us to the Roy Burkholder farm. Once there, we were able to visit the cemetery which is located just off S.R. 39 east of Berlin. Unfortunately this wasn't the correct cemetery either. I came across an old letter I received from another Shoup relative about 11 years ago. The letter stated she had visited the Burkholder Cemetery located in Salt Creek Twp. where Jacob at one time owned land. I have a copy of Jacob's will that states some of his land was to be reserved for a cemetery. I've double checked the index and can't seem to find a reference to a Burkholder Cemetery in Salt Creek Twp. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance! There was also a Johnsville in Montgomery Co. maybe 10 miles from downtown Dayton. My favorite site for checking out these "older" towns that MAY NOT be on maps of today is the 1895 U.S. Atlas site at: http://www.livgenmi.com/1895 Cindy Kimes Pod50@aol.com wrote: > > Holly, > You may want to look in Morrow Co., OH. Holly, You may want to look in Morrow Co., OH. There is a Johnsville there, and just from researching through the years, know there were many Shaffers that lived there. And many people in the area went from Richland, Holmes, Ashland, Knox, back and forth. Just a thought that might be your brick wall. Good luck. Bev
Hello all! My 2nd-great grandmother, Delilah Charlene Shaffer, was born (per her death cert-info given by daughter) in Johnsville. The Ohio GenWeb site tells me this city was in Holmes Co. She was born 9 Mar 1879 to William and Elizabeth Nife Shaffer, both b Pennsylvania. I know of 2 siblings to Delilah only: Ed and Amanda, but per 1900 census of Wood Co., Ohio Elizabeth had 10 children. I have searched for this family for many years with no luck. I would like to narrow Johnsville's location down to a township if possible to search the 1880 census. Any help very much appreciated! Thank you! Holly N Ashby Hofmann

Scott there is a unpublished, that has been copied and a couple of libraries in the Holmes area have it. I wish the Holmes Co library would have a person to answer queries but they don't. The Wayne County library does have a copy. You might also check with the Holmes County Genealogical Society. They used to publish a newsletter of which I have several years of backdated copies. They would have a "Wandering Sexton" who would give driving directions to the cemetary and then record all interments as well as provide a sketch of where they are buried. Try contacting the president of that society, Judy. I wrote to her recently to ask about rejoining the society and for backcopies of the years I missed. Here is a copy of my email with her address: She wrote: Organization: Holme Co. I want to thank everyone who replied to my query! I received so many replies with infomation and offers to help and links to good sites, I am overwhelmed. There are a lot of nice people researching in Holmes Co, OH. And, after 15 years of searching (well, not every minute, of course) we have now connected with our Miller and Yoder ancestors. I think you all know how it makes you feel when you hit paydirt! Thank-you again, Martha Miller, Tulsa, OK PS: Does anyone know if the given name Denah is male or female?
