I don't think it was a problem with the LIST, as I have Norton also, and it did not reject the said message. June Smith -----Original Message----- From: Ila L. This was passed along to me by another researcher. Probably many of you have seen this one before, but today it "stirred" me more so than before. Hope you enjoy this - Census Taker It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children ... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age ... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God Bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... it's now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown
Dear Seekers: I have found the TOPO Map to be of great help in locating/finding those "out of the way places with strange sounding names", and others things like little towns...even without a state's name, 'sometimes' cemeteries etc., can be found -- following is the website for it: http://www.topozone.com/ It is easy to use, just fill in the blank - can zoom in, out, enlarge, etc. Another very comprehensive map website for the U.S. and many areas of the world is: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/Map_collection/map_sites/hist_sites.h tml Good searching - good luck! Thanks for the input. A couple of others have suggested the same - so I think that must be it. ----- Original Message ----- From: Coy Smith <cwsmith@nts-online.net> To: <OHHOLMES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2001 3:46 PM Subject: Re: [OHHOLMES] Township information > Could it be Lake Fork in Ashland Co.? > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Harvy Miller" <hardot@uia.net> > To: <OHHOLMES-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2001 1:02 PM > Subject: RE: [OHHOLMES] Township information > > > > Hello Joan, I have looked everywhere I can think of and cannot find a > Lake > > Jork/qork. Joan, If I am thinking right I believe there is a place called Lake Fork which is now a canoe livery on the Mohican River, probably named after a crossroads village of the past. If I am right, that is. Perhaps someone from down Lakeville, Loudonville way would be more sure of this than I am. Hello Joan, I have looked everywhere I can think of and cannot find a Lake Jork/qork. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of the entry? I might be able to figure it out from that. There is a lake outside Big Prairie called O'dell's Lake, and I am sure there are other small lakes that I don't know about. However, I don't believe they would be a postal address. I want to try and find them in the 1880 census but I don't know which township Big Prairie is located in. I've been to the Holmes Co. site but can't read the township map well enough to find Big Prairie - if someone could help me on this, I would really appreciate it. Possibly of some help IF you're unable to obtain 1880 census data.... LDS has published the complete 1880 census on some 50+ CDs. This set came out last year and now the Genealogical CDs site at http://loricase.com/CDs/cdlist.html NOW has volunteers doing lookups from these CDs. (Only way I know about these CDs is we ran into them in the library in a neighboring county in Indiana. and just checked to see if this website has anyone doing lookups!) BTW, when you request lookups, be sure you follow directions given at the top of the site! Karen, Is this a file that can be downloaded to a PC? Or did you read it from the film? Does anyone know if the Holmes County Health Dept issues uncertified copies of death certificates (1945 to the present), what they cost, and whether they accept out of state checks or require money orders? Thanks in advance for any information on this. Sallie McHenry Sherman Oaks CA
Hi, Adam! I'm not answering in a very timely manner, but I must have lost your message! Just found it as I was cleaning out my email box. I have a Catren Arnold (b. OH) married to John Fisher (b. OH) (my g-g-g-grandparents). I don't have dates on them, but their son Isaac was born in 1830 in Holmes Co, OH and later moving to Iowa where he died in 1914. Anything connect yet? I'm thinking Catren might be a granddaughter to your George, and "Catren" might be a takeoff of one of his wives: "Catherine" Leatherman? I haven't done any searching in Holmes Co -- just joined the list to get a feel of names - many of which are names I recognize from Iowa. Thanks! ...mkm >Hi, > I wonder if anyone has information on George Arnold (1752-1835) who was >probably born in PA and is said to be buried in Holmes County, Ohio.
