    2. heycman
    3. DOWNS/HALL REUNION 2002 JUNE 21,22,23 FRIDAY, JUNE 21st We will begin the reunion Friday evening with a meal in an Amish home. We will be meeting at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time at the home of Mrs. Maude Raber, 3497 C.R. 135, Millersburg, Ohio. Her home is located between Berlin and Walnut Creek. Coming from Berlin, the road will be on your right after you pass the little rest area. Coming from Walnut Creek, it will be on your left, so if you pass the rest area, you have gone too far. County road 135 is clearly marked so you should have no trouble finding it. Mrs. Raber lives in the first house on the left after you pass the sawmill. Mrs. Raber enjoys a fine reputation as a wonderful cook, is a contributor to "Taste Of Home Magazine", and if you have never eaten in an Amish home you are in for a treat. The meal will cost $12.00 plus tip and includes chicken and steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, vegetable, salad, homemade bread, homemade pies, coffee, and tea. Children will be $6.00 and under three eat free. There is limited seating in Mrs. Raber's home so to guarantee a meal with the group GET YOUR RESERVATION IN EARLY by e-mailing me or calling. See end of page to contact me. This is the only part of the reunion that will have limited space. SATURDAY, JUNE 22nd At 9:30 a.m. we will meet in Mt Hope, Ohio at Lehman's Hardware Store for a visit to the Mt. Hope (Downs-Hall) Cemetery. The first burial being Alfred Downs (eight years old) June 13, 1836 and the oldest person buried there being Curtis Downs (1777-1845) The Cemetery is one and a half miles from the hardware store and though we drive most of the way wear comfortable shoes and clothes as we do have to walk through a field and into a woods. We will finish marking the family graves this year. We have restored several in the past. IN ORDER TO GO TO THE CEMETERY--JUST SHOW UP AT LEHMAN'S HARDWARE ABOUT 9:30. Mt Hope is very small and you can't miss the hardware. After the visit to the Cemetery we usually take a little time to explore the area or just have a leisurely lunch and relax, or to do some genealogy research. There is an antique train at Sugar Creek that travels through the heart of Downs-Hall territory and is an enjoyable trip. You will be provide information if you are interested. Saturday evening many of us eat together again at a local restaurant that we agree upon. If you wish to join in just follow the crowd. We then head for the hotel or local pub and exchange stories about the Damn Downes. SUNDAY, JUNE 23 There is a restaurants in the hotel and we gather between 8 & 9 to eat and say our final good-bye. You are invited to come for all or any part of the three day reunion. If you live close by in Ohio you may not need a hotel. For those who do, a block of rooms has been reserved at the Carlisle Village inn at Walnut Creek. Just ask for the rooms held under Downs Reunion, phone # 330/893-3636. If the rooms are taken by the time you call, there is another motel a block away, The Inn at Walnut Creek, phone # 1 800/262-7181. Or in Berlin, the Amish Country Inn phone # 330/893-3300. 1. [OHHOLMES] Michael Franks Family
    2. Hi listmembers - We are trying to obtain photographs of the tombstones of the grandchildren of Michael Franks I (c1725-1793 Fayette Co. PA). I have a dozen or two that I've taken myself, but I wondered if anyone on the list might be a descendant of one of the following and have a photo of their tombstone they would be willing to share? Abigail Moore, wife of Conrad Franks; Jacob Franks II (son of Jacob I) - Jacobs Lutheran Cemetery, Fayette Co. PA Michael Franks III and his wife, Amy First; buried at Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery, Fayette Co. PA Jacob and Sarah Franks Stroh (Straw), buried at Saegertown Cemetery, Crawford Co. PA Sarah Livengood, wife of Jacob Franks II, buried at West Lawn Cemetery, Paint Township, Wayne Co. OH Jacob Hatfield, buried Acme Lutheran Cemetery, Guilford Township, Medina Co. OH. Catherine Franks Hatfield, buried Easton Memorial Cemetery, Chippewa Township, Wayne Co. OH Phineas First, buried Old Fredericksburg West Cemetery?, Wayne Co. OH. Husband of Elizabeth Franks Fluhart First. John and Barbara Franks Barrickman, probably buried at Barrickman Cemetery, Blackville, West Virginia. James Fluhart (Crawford Co. PA?), husband of Elizabeth Franks Fluhart First. Nicholas and Mary Franks Helmick, ? Abraham and Margaret Kechler Franks, Bureau County, Illinois? John Franks, Sr.; Hillsdale County MI or Hancock Co. OH? George Franks, Greene County, PA? Also Michael Franks II, son of Michael I, burial location not known. John and Catherine Franks Baccus (daughter of Michael Franks I), and their children - Peter and Barbara Hoover Baccus Michael and Margaret Baccus Christian and Sarah Baccus James/Jacob and Nancy Smith Baccus John and Mary Baccus William and Sarah Baccus Snyder Although there are still a few details to finalize, we are hoping to "go to press" with the reprint of the Michael Franks Family History and Genealogy by March 1. The publisher is currently running a limited offer of free photo pages, and we felt this might be an interesting appendix to the original book. Please email me (sflein@aol.com) if you are able to help out on this tombstone photo "quest!" Thanks, Susan Franks Leininger

    3. I have been interested in your messages regarding Joseph Mattocks. Do you have any knowledge of this Joseph and Elizabeth Mattock (see census record below) that are living in the household of Parkinson Grant? From notes I have, Eliz. husband' s name was Joseph Mattock and he died. Elizabeth was living in Parkinson Grant household in 1850. "Probable reason", but no SOURCE for this, is that Elizabeth Mattock was the mother of Parkinson Grant's wife Mary Ann Mattock (b. abt 1820 OH) and that Joseph would be Mary Ann's brother. My 4th gr-grandfather Jonathan Grant, was one of the earliest settlers in Holmes Co. and Parkinson descends from him. Donna Ellis dellisnctc.net ----------------------------- 1850 Holmes Co. 1. [OHHOLMES] Aultman widow leaves $2.1 million bequests
    2. Ronald D Bauerle
    3. My folks sent me a clipping from the 3/20/96 Lansing (MI) State Journal, presumably found in the papers of my mother's mother, whose grandmother was Mary Jane Aultman of Holmes Co, OH and moved to Clinton Co, MI after she married John Beck. My folks were wondering if the Aultman mentioned in the article was a relative. Some excerpts: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ovid - Planted here 89 years ago, Paul Aultman's church roots have sprouted $100,000 for the United Church of God. Not pennies from heaven, but a gift from the Florida estate of Aultman's widow. The $100,000 surprise from the late Gertrude (Aultman) Gray of Margate, Fla., is equal to a year of collection plate money at the red-brick church Aultman joined in 1907. "Isn't that something - that she would want to do that because her husband came here as a boy?" marveled choir director Gwen Kelley [...] Ovid, population 1,604, is 22 miles northeast of Lansing in Clinton Co. [...] Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Gray's gift is that her motive is cloaked in time. Nobody at the church remembers hearing about Gray or Aultman, a 1909 graduate of Ovid High School. [...] Gray was born Gertrude King on Feb. 26, 1897. She met Aultman in Akron, Ohio, about 1920, said James Dolan of Margate, who was Gray's accountant. Aultman was an executive with Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., a University of Michigan graduate, and he had attended Albion College from 1913 to 1915 on a Methodist scholarship. He died in 1942. Gertrude Gray invested a small inheritance left by Aultman, Dolan said. "The accumulation of her wealth took place over the years from savings and common stocks." She died in 1989 at age 92. Her estate was divided last fall, following upon the 1994 death of her second husband, Rollin Gray. In addition to the $100,000 for the Ovid church, the Gertrude Gray estate left: - $1 million to Albion College for scholarships - $1 million for scholarship for residents of Florida's Broward County, in the Fort Lauderdale area. In Ovid, the 270-member United Church congregation- which evolved through a 1942 merger of Methodist-Episcopal and Congregational churches here - hasn't had to scrape for major projects, [Rev. Steven] Pearson said. The 1893 building of what began as a Methodist-Episcopal church was paid for by one swoop of donations then, he said. [...] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- As to whether or not he was a relative, I have the following family group sheet for Mary Jane Aultman Beck's brother Riley Aultman (both were children of George & Margaret (Conrad) Aultman of Holmes Co, OH): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Riley J. Aultman b. /1858 Holmes? Co, OH (212417) d. /1937 Ovid?, MI? Arabella Morgan b. /1857 d. /1934 Ovid?, MI? b) Eureka Cem, Eureka, MI m. 11/28/1887 Holmes Co, OH 1. Ralph Aultman, m) Escanaba, MI 1935 b. /1888 d. /1936 Ethel Clark b. /1888 d. /1963 b) Eureka Cem, no children m. 2? Paul Aultman b. d. Gertrude Gregory b. d. no children m. 3? Lois Aultman b. /1900 b) Eureka Cem. d. /1936 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not sure of my source for the above - it's probably the booklet on George put together by Floyd Aultman (I either don't have a copy, or don't know where it is). I'm a bit confused that it says Paul's wife was Gertrude Gregory vs the article's Gertrude King, but I believe this same Aultman booklet listed me as Ronald _Cressman_ Bauerle instead of Ronald _David_ Bauerle, so nothing's perfect I guess :^| By CC to the Aultman list and especially Jim Sherlock, maybe somebody can confirm Gertrude's maiden name, but assuming this is the same one as in the article, then I am Paul Aultman's first cousin, three times removed. Note that unless they had other children that I don't know about, it looks like Riley Aultman's line died out :^( At least there was this bequest to remember his son by... Thanks, Mom and Dad, for the article! Hopefully the Clinton & Holmes Co and Aultman lists found this interesting...
