    1. Advice on most wanted
    2. Barbara & George Grenier
    3. Hi all: I am looking for suggestions. My most wanted Cochocton people are the parents of Jane STILLWELL, born 1809 in VA and from another source now WV Jane married Samuel SQUIRE, 29 Mar 1829, Coshocton, OH. Jane died 20 Dec 1865 age 56 yrs, 2 months 14 days according to the obituary. I can not find Samuel and Jane on the 1830 census. Where were they? In 1840 they are in Jackson Township. Samuel's father, Bradley Squire is listed in Washington Township on the 1820 census. Samuel and Jane are NOT listed with Bradley Squire or Samuel's brother Charles or Bradley jr. in 1830. I have checked land records in Coshocton and Muskingum and found no land transfer to Jane and/or her and Samuel from a Stillwell. I have checked out the two Stillwells I know of in the area. Daniel Stillwell in Muskingum. The Ancestral file (LDS) has Jane as his daughter mixing her up with a son John or making them twins or..... I have accounted for all the children of Daniel by will, land records and a historical account of a child who died very early on and was buried in a cemetery which no longer exists-or has been built over in Zanesville. I have checked out Stephen Stillwell of Franklin Township. I investigated whether or not Jane might be a child of an early marriage. Stephen married Mary Thompson in 1811 (Muskingum marriages). A descendant of this couple (Pat Overell) gave me a list of the children of this union and they take up all the spaces in both the 1820 and 1830 census records. Can't squeeze Jane in anywhere. I checked the index of the Court of Common Pleas Coshocton and found a court case between Samuel Squire and Mary (Thompson) Stillwell. But nothing of genealogical interest. WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE??? The only other Stillwell I have come up with is Asher Stillwell. Does anyone know anything about him? I found him by searching the Bureau of Land Management files on the internet. He was buying land in Holmes County in the late 1830's early 1840's. Barbara Brea, CA

    3. We all know there are lots of people researching their ancestors that don't use computers. But, these same folks are reading genealogy columns in their local newspapers. So how does one find a genealogy column in the locality you're researching that will post queries? And, may one submit queries by email? The Mobile (Alabama, USA) Genealogical Society's web site has a page called THE NEWS STAND that provides this information? They list many newspapers, by State, and include information on how to contact the column's writer. A great way to find some of your kin! 1. Re: Copies of Marriage Information
    2. Richard Given
    3. Hi Derek and Holmes List, There are no "Certificates" for most marriages prior to 1900 in any state. The marriage information is in the form of a county clerks journal entry. It is in the "hand of the clerk" so there are signatures of your ancestors :-(. For the time period you are seeking the typical information is the name of parties, possibly the county each came from, the marriage date and married by whom. No bondsman, no parents and no ages :-(. Who has these.... The Family History Library has microfilm copies. You can order the film through a local Family History Center in Ontario for about $4.00. Then you could make a copy if the journal entry. Also about 95 to 98% of the marriages for the state of Ohio prior to about 1890 are in the LDS data base called IGI (International Genealogical Index). If you are searching for any marriage in Ohio but don't know the county, the IGI is like a state wide index for about 95% of the marriages. So if the marriage is not found it may be in the remaining 5% :-(.... I don't know if the Holmes County Clerk has marriage reciords or not? Maybe someone living in Holmes would know? 3. Did you know that SOME libraries do limited research by mail? Many charge for just the costs of copying the info and mailing it. Normal procedure for long-distance research is: 1. Send the initial inquiry to the library stating as much as you know about the ancestor. (Many libraries with internet access will accept initial inquires by email.) 2. The libraries check their resources for info on your ancestor. 3. They contact you, stating how much $ to send for cost of copies. 4. You forward the funds along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Sometimes they only have census records, but anything these libraries have available is a help when one doesn't live near the area! If you need the address of a library, check: http://www.acclaimed.com/helpful/ for more than 9,000 U.S. public libraries and addresses, phone numbers, and some email addresses. 1. Citation of Internet Sources
    2. tom and linda shipman
    3. Hi Holmes Co. Listees: Another bit of information from the Fayette Co, Pa list. Linda San Diego, CA A WORD FROM THE SPONSOR: TIPS ON CITING INTERNET SOURCES by Brian Mavrogeorge, The Learning Company <[email protected]> Source citation basics include identifying who wrote the information, the form in which the information appeared, and who the publisher and/or repository of the information were. Provide enough detail to permit some evaluation of the source and to enable yourself and others to find the exact source you used. In EVIDENCE! CITATION & ANALYSIS FOR THE FAMILY HISTORIAN, Elizabeth Shown Mills, CG, CGL, FASG, FNGS, applies these basics to the Internet. To make it easy to follow her guidelines, Ultimate Family Tree (UFT) <http://www.uftree.com/> contains source templates authorized by Mills. UFT users can document sources easily by selecting a fill-in-the-blanks template and answering these questions: 1. Who wrote the information? This is the author, the compiler, Webmaster or creator of the Web page. Because electronic mail addresses such as [email protected] and URLs (universal resource locators) -- addresses of Web sites-change frequently, Mills recommends that you also provide a postal address of the originator. 2. What is its form? This might be "e-mail to author," "family file," or "Stanton Family Association Web site." 3. Who published the information or in what repository is it located? This should identify the e-mail user, the Webmaster's name, or the name of the organization. It also could be the page's URL. 4. When was it received? Because of the issue of permanence (or lack thereof) of information found on the Internet, indicate the date the information was downloaded or received. To facilitate evaluating the reliability of the source, cite not only the Internet source, but also the source on which it is based. Has the Webmaster done a partial or full extraction from the original record? Are these simply random bits and pieces of information from unidentified original or secondary sources? This is important because most of the information on the Internet originated in some other medium and is simply being published on the Internet by someone other than the original creator. I found two Web sites listing my family information-current living family, with birth dates, marriage dates, locations, and personal information such as adoption and nursing home placement. I was horrified and irate and felt I had just found a Peeping Tom at my window. When I wrote to the Web person to inquire about the source of the information and complain about the public display, I received a reply that expressed surprise that anyone would complain; he said others thank him for the Web exposure. He was irate that I was irate! Finally, he grudgingly agreed to delete adoption and nursing home information, but no deletion of birth dates for any of these living people. He said "That is just not going to happen." He did supply the e-mail address of the submitter, but no name-he protects the privacy of the submitter, but not of the victims! In response to my complaint, the person who submitted my information to the Web site I described wrote to say that she has asked the Web manager to delete the information that referred to living persons in my family. I don't know her or how she received my information, but I am grateful for her help. This Web site is supposedly a family Web site, but it is certainly far afield from what I would consider my extended family-I have never heard of these people. The second Web site I looked at was an individual family site on Family Tree Maker done by a cousin who received information from me about three years ago. She has all the names and birth dates (some were copied incorrectly), but not place names or personal comments about living people, so at least she used some restraint. I would prefer not to have the living people, or at least not the birth dates, listed, however, and will ask her to delete them. I have sent family information-by Snail Mail-on three or four occasions to new "cousins" that I met through Web inquiries, and most of those I knew about even if I did not know them personally. There was no implication that this information would be sent to the Web. I like my privacy, and I suspect others do too. I guess I just thought anyone with common sense would understand that it is not in anyone's interest to disperse private information about living people. Even if such information is available as public record, it is not available in such convenient organized form with links to others. We can cut down on public display of information on living persons by deleting it from materials we send to others.
