Here's another surname search engine that was just brought to my attention. http://www.genealogyportal.com/ Don't know how why various searches find different references, but I found new internet references with this one! [new as in never seen before!] Cindy Kimes
I am planning a trip the family cemeteries in Holmes Co. this summer. I would like to stop by the Holmes Co. chpt. OGS and ck on birth & death records prior to 1909 when the state started collecting. I would also like to ck on wills, property and other things. Where is the Holmes Co. located and what are the hours. My family is the Sylvanus (Stutzman)Hershberger/Ella (Miller)Miller I still have many family members residing in the area. I will be up several times as we have our Miller reunion in July in that area. Thanks in advance for any assistance. ~pat (entwhistle-entwistle/hershberger) griffiths/jones
The Holmes County Library has two books of township maps. One book covers 1875, the other 1907. Each township is drawn on a full page with a sketch of property lines and the landowner's name. Does anyone know if township maps were made for years other than 1875 and 1907? It would be nice if the folks at the library would scan those pages and post them on the web. I had been curious about that statement and figured the particular descendant offering the information was in error. My ancestors were listed on the 1840 and 1850 censuses as living in Paint Twp, Holmes Co, OH. Although they DID immigrate after 1824, I figure these farmers were concerned with the land and how crops would grow; not whether it was part of Wayne Co. or part of Holmes Co. I also have my IMMEL family in Paint Township. It is the N.E. corner? Of Holmes co. Winesburg is where my family was. I understand part of Paint Twp. can also be in Wayne Co. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Carole in Georgia On Tue, 20 Apr 1999 01:44:15 -0500 "George M. I just read another message concerning the location of early deeds. I know my ancestors where in what became Holmes Co. as early as 1814. I also know they owned land as it was passed on to their heirs. And I have found them on tax records - first for Coshocton Co., then Holmes. So far I have not been able to find their first deeds. Where should I look? (not in Holmes or Coshocton Co. indexes) Any ideas? Thanks. Paint Township is in the north east corner of Holmes County. The Greenville Line goes through it's center from east to west. Before 1824 the north half was part of Wayne County. The south half Coshocton or some part of Tuscawaras. Can't find that right now. In the Atlas of 1907: Land owners of Paint Township 1825 Abner Ramage and Alex Twaddle are listed. In the Early Land Records of Wayne County these surnames are not listed as land owners. Nor in the 1826 Tax Book. So these persons must have lived in the south half. There is a small map of Holmes County at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohholmes/ on the Holmes County Web page. Winesburg is south of the GT line. Bob Strock "George M. Dear Listmates: I am seeking information on my ancestor Alexander TWADDLE and his wife, Elisabeth RAMAGE and her brother Abner. Alexander and Elisabeth arrived in Holmes county with their family in 1822. Alexander bought some land in Paint township but soon sold part of it to his brother-in-law, Abner RAMAGE, who came from PA. Abner married a Sarah CUSTER a cousin of General George C. and settled in Holmes for some time. My immediate questions are for anyone who can answer them: 1. Where is Paint township? Does anyone have a township map for the county? 2. Holmes co. was formed in January 1824 from Wayne, Coshocton, and Tuscawara counties. From which county would the land that includes Paint township derive? I have made a Lookup request for any Deeds involving Twaddle or Ramage transactions to Phyllis Gauss. If the deeds are earlier that 1824, I am afraid that they might be in one of the other founding counties, nest pas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you George Twaddle [email protected]

After reading posts on a couple lists for more than a year now, I've noticed lots of folks from the Holmes Co, OH area moved to the northern Indiana counties of St. Joseph, Marshall, Elkhart, and Kosciusko. Was there something special about this area of Indiana ca 1850? Hoping someone has some ideas! Cindy Kimes

Researching family history that includes Jacob K. Henry b.1850 d. 1920. He was married in Holmes Co. 8-26-1880 to Nancy J. Snyder b.1865 d.1924. They moved to Wayne Co. and lived between Madisonburg and Creston. The couple raised ten children who were Lucy, Albert, John, Elmer, Ollie, Harry, Andrew, Roy, Anna, and Sadie. Jacob Henry is my gr-gr-grandfather, my grandmother who is 92 and has helped me immensely has no knowledge of her grandfather's origin but offered some info about her grandmother Nancy. She had a brother Jonathan and a sister Susan who married John Wonder and lived near Danville. Any info that could help me would be greatly appreciated as I am really stuck on this family(Henry).
Thanks to all who answered my question - German Twp. is not Clark Twp. Happy Easter to all. Peg, Try Clark Twp in the Southeast Corner! Keith Clark
Hope all of you are enjoying spring weather! It's looking good here in N. Indiana. I have been studying tax records for my ancestors. They are listed in range 5, twp. 8, section 20 in Coshocton Co. After Holmes became a county, they are in the same RTS in Holmes Co., German Twp. I have a very good county road map of Holmes Co. which shows the section numbers but not range and township. German Township must have been renamed. What is it today? Thanks for your help. Laura, there is a CD out there on early Ohio marriages, like from 1800-1850. Maybe someone would do a lookup for the 1820 marriage for you.
