I have an interest in Cunninghams from Wayne and Holmes Counties. Matthew Cunningham, who died in Holmes Co during the 1840's, had at least four un-named daughters born between 1794 and 1820. His son Samuel has a daughter unknown and his son Matthew, Jr could have had a daughter or two. Please keep my family in mind as you search for your Casto family. Hi Doty's I note your search on the Holmes County, Ohio net page. While in Hardin County, Ohio searching for my great grandfather's parents I stopped at the Harvey cemetery where my great grandfather was first buried hoping that I might find his parents graves - no luck. However, I did see a name that I remembered, that being Doty. The following is what I recorded from the headstone: Josiha M. Doty Died June 12, 1893 Aged 72Y 11M 7D There is a GAR marker on the grave so he must have been in the Civil War. I could not read the details on that part. Mary Wife of J. M. Doty Died Apr 9 1887 63Y 3M 7D Hope this may be of some help to someone. Ron Shafer Milan, Ohio

Hi Everyone I just wanted to take a moment and fill you in on some happenings in Holmes Co. The Holmes Co Gen Society has been actively working towards making Holmes Co records more accessible to the public. This has included the microfilming of county records from 1824 -1900 through LDS and the preservation of books and materials. With the completion of the Holmes Co History book and its subsequent sales we have been able to house our collection of materials in the former Nashville Library Building. These records and materials include: the original records from 1824 -1900, records on Indiana, Illinois, as well as other areas outside of Ohio. We have materials on many counties in Ohio and a growing collection of materials from our Mother counties, Wayne, Coshocton, Tuscarawas, as well as Knox, and Ashland. Most materials available on Holmes County are available at this location as well. We staff the library with volunteers and have regular hours two days a week through the first of November at which time we go to sleep for the winter with the exception of appointments and special requests (we have electric baseboard heat!) We have a nice computer system provided by the Friends of the Library (Nashville), our own copy machine and a beautiful location that is easy to find. The library can be reached at 330 378-2314, we do not yet have internet access but will have that as soon as the computer is out of the repair shop. The hard drive crashed one week after the warranty expired! (GO FIGURE!) If you have family histories, group sheets, or other research materials that you no longer need please consider a donation to the Holmes Co Chapter, OGS and their Genealogical Library. If you are planning on being in the area, please call ahead and we will try to accommodate meeting you at your convenience. We are a small group here and appreciate the support of those that research in and around Holmes Co. Sincerely, Dena' Crider Holmes Co., OGS

Logsdon, 1950 "History of Villages - People - Places in Eastern Holmes Co." pp 116-121,152-7 by Clarence Troyer, 1975 (this book has pictures of the mill which I matched when I found it 8 years ago) Article by Clarence Troyer dated 7/21/74, paper unknown Article by Clarence Troyer in the 12/8/77 Daily Record, pg 28 John & Elizabeth Altman, s/o William, moved from Westmoreland Co, PA to Tuscarawas Co, OH and built a mill there, one of the first in the county. John's son Isaac and his wife Nancy Wallick moved to Holmes Co. and built a wool mill around 1845 and later a grist and saw mill. Around 1852 Isaac's sons began moving to other states; eventually in 1862 they sold the grist and saw mills to Yoder & Ash, and son George bought the wool mill, tore it down, and moved the equipment to a new mill he built on his wife Peggy Conrad's farm. It was this 1862 mill that was still standing in 1975 and 1991 and the subject of my query. The mill you're referring to was the _grist_ mill; Benjamin Beck bought it in 1864 from Yoder and Eash, moved the equipment to his property, and later installed wool equipment in the original grist mill. He sold it Fisher in 1869, who later took in Troyer as his partner; Troyer took over everything in 1873 and operated it till his death in 1915, at which time everything was sold to the Medina Oil & Gas Co. for a picnic grounds, and they tore down the old (grist) mill which had been damaged by the 1913 flood as you suggest. The picnic grounds didn't work out, and the land was sold a few times. Other people associated with it were Orie Oswald and Ralph Aling. Hopefully this will answer some of Ruth's questions too. The spelling change from Altman to Aultman took place sometime between Isaac and his son George R. Ron Bauerle
My grandfather Milton SHEEN was born in Holmes County in 1839. He was on the 1840 census in Millersburg but I have not been able to find out anything else about him or his family. He was listed with his father William SHEEN (Shehen,Shehan,Scheen) on the census. Is there is anyone who can help me find something. After this census I cannot trace William and so I wonder if he died in that area. I found Milton in 1850 in Putnam cty with another William Shehen who I believe is another family. The ages are not corresponding with the 1840 ages. I think he is with an uncle. I would be ever-so-grateful if I could just get a little more information. Marilynn VanBrocklin [email protected]
After doing some LANCE research in the Wooster library last Saturday (anybody know what happened to the big LANCE book that used to be there?) before the 100th LANCE reunion last Sunday, I drove down into Holmes Co. to see the old Aultman mill again (I last saw it 8 or so years ago). I was rather disappointed to find that it wasn't there anymore :^( Does anybody know whether it fell down, burned down, or was torn down by the current owner? Were there any newspaper articles on it when it happened? Later I tried to find the Mennonite Cemetery near Farmerstown where a couple of my BECK/FAIR ancestors are buried, and I couldn't find it either :^( I didn't have the directions to it with me, but I didn't think it'd be that hard to find again after 9 years. Can somebody confirm that it's still there and not been plowed up like the former Logsdon Cemetery where Nancy WALLICK ALTMAN was buried? :^( Ron Bauerle
