    3. To all those who answered my plea. I want to thank all of you who responded to my request on the book I have been searching for. I have also been asked by several to pass the information along if I find it. I believe this to be the one I was searching for. So to Margaret Calvin my deepest thanks. Even if these are not direct lines the books would prove interesting to my dad's heritage. I thought some of you would find your lines in one of these Christians. Family J is close, but my line came over earlier. I was also happy to make contact with other members of my Christian Miller line. Deepest thanks again to all. I will most likely get the bks. If they prove to be of help to the Holmes Co. area I will try to get them for that chpt as well later this yr. ~pat jones~ Ann M. Scott wrote: > Pat, > > Margaret Calvin put us in touch at last. 3. My lines of research concentration in Holmes Co at the moment are: MILLER/HERSHBERGER/STUTZMAN/TROYER I have most info from the "Amish and Amish - Mennonite Genealogies" and the OMII site. I have a problem with a date and am hoping someone is a member of the Walnut Creek Mennonite Church. My grandfather Sylvanus "Venus" Hershberger was a minister there many yrs ago. I have been gathering d/cs for the Miller line for the last yr at the OHS. I have been unable to get Emanuel A. Hershberger's. My ggrandfather. I ck the OMII site and the date is different than the one dad gave me. Dad said he thought his grandfather died in 1942 the site gives a date in 1952. My request is if someone is a member and wouldn't mind cking the marker on the grave. I will be spending time at the Mohican again this summer to photograph some of the cemeteries and get some of the info at Millersburg that I can't get at the state level. Also if anyone is aware of a bk out that takes the Amish/Menno lines bk to the 1500's in Europe naming families and villages I would like to get that as well. It is not the "Amish and Amish/Mennonite Genealogies." I am told it is more current and the name does not give a clue that it is a Amish/Menno history bk. A woman who works at a private library told me abt it and I can't find my paper with the info on it. I would like to get a copy for my dad, myself and the Holmes Co Chpt OGS to go with the other 2 I gave abt John "Indian" Miller and the "Amish and Amish/Mennonite Genealogies" So if any one knows the title and where I can get copies I would dearly love to hear from you. Deepest thanks to anyone who can give me the date for Emanuel A. Hershberger's death. ~pat (entwhistle-entwistle/gethen/hershberger) griffiths/jones~

    1. TRASTER / JAMESON - 1850
    2. Joann Jameson
    3. JAMESON ----- TRASTER ----- CUNNINGHAM ----- WOLMAGOT I have been looking for a clue to the names of the parents of my Mary TRASTER for 14 years, and thought that maybe some of you who are familiar with Holmes County records might be able to suggest a source I haven't tried yet. Mary Helen TRASTER was born in Feb 1828, in either OH or PA (census records don't agree). On 1 Apr 1848, she was married in Millersburg, Holmes, OH to John Hook JAMESON of Hookstown, Beaver, PA. I have a copy of the marriage record, but there is no clue there to Mary's family. On the 1850 census, this couple is living in Beaver Co., PA. Several of John H. JAMESON's uncles lived in Millersburg, Holmes, OH, and are listed there in the 1850 census. In the household of his uncle, John JAMESON, is an Elizabeth TRASTER, age 8, b OH. There is a Margaret TRASTER, age 20, b PA, listed in the household of Henry WOLGAMOT, a farmer; and a Sarah TRASTER, age 18, b PA, listed in the household of Andrew CUNNINGHAM, a blacksmith. I know that Margaret is the sister of Mary TRASTER JAMESON, because she is shown in the JAMESON household in Van Buren Co, IA, in the IA state census of (I believe) 1855, as sister-in-law of the head of household. Several of the JAMESON families of Holmes Co. and Beaver Co. went to Iowa in the late 1840's and early 1850's, some remained in Holmes Co. I have found no further reference to Margaret, Sarah or Elizabeth TRASTER. It looks like something might have happened to their parents, and the TRASTER sisters were farmed out to different Holmes County families, but I have found nothing in probate or guardianship records to support this. I thought that John JAMESON's wife might have been the widow of a TRASTER when they married, and that the 8 year old Elizabeth was her daughter, but that is not the case. There are TRASTER families in Coshocton County, OH, but the young TRASTER women in Holmes County don't seem to fit into their families. The Holmes & Coshocton records I have checked are the ones that are available on microfilm through the FHC. I would appreciate any suggestions about other records that might be available. 1. Re: marriage license
    2. Richard Given
    3. Hi Holmes Co List, Ohio didn't require a marriage license for the time period you are requesting. The following is from GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH: Methods and Sources, Vol 2. Ohio Chapter II page 22. "Marriage records dating from the organization of each county are in the custody of the (county) Probate Court. . . . . . Until 1951 marriage was legal in Ohio without a county license if banns were announced in the church. Ministers were required to send the records to the County Probate Court, but they were often careless about this. It was about 1900 when the ages of the parties, names of the parents and other detailed information were required." It does not state this was a marriage license, but Indiana introduced marriage applications in 1905 with detailed info and Illinois required a marriage license in 1877. A search of the FHLC only had marriage records for Holmes County and no indication there were marriage licenses. I have several Holmes Co. marriages from 1842 to 1865 and have not found any information on marriages licenses. How to find the parents names!! The best option you have is to look in the 1850 Ohio Census. The marriage record will give the surnames of the bride and groom. Look in the 1850 Ohio Index for all the people in Holmes County. Then find them in the census. Look for a family with a 16 to 2? year old daughter (you would have a better idea of her age in 1850) with the same given name of the bride on the marriage record. Don't stop at the first one!! Keep going especially if the name is Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, etc.!! The other option is to find the bride and groom in all the censuses until their death. Locate their death certificate and maybe there parents names are on it. Another choice is to find the bride and groom in the 1880 or later census and see what state they say their parents were born in. this is another clue to narrow duplicates from the 1850 census suggestion. Also you may find a parent living with them years later. Another option is to locate the groom or his children in a bcounty iography. Hopefully, the wife's parents are given! Biographies are especially useful in Midwest research and very informatiove, but not everyone had a biography :-( These are some of the best and easist thing to do to find parents..... I hope this helps you and other on the list. Best regards, Richard -- Richard Given, Accredited Genealogist and professional researcher. Specializing in Ohio, Midwest and United State research. 1. Rider/Reiter--Dietz/Deetz--Gonser
    2. I am an ancestor of William Reiter/Rider b 1773 Pa, died 1854 Holmes Co., Ohio. He resided from about 1815-1838 in Stark Co. and from about 1838-1853 or 1854 in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio with his daughter, Margaret Warnes and her husband Philip. His wife was Hannah Bordner/Bortner also b Pa. Today I received an e-mail from a favorite second cousin, she forwarded a query from someone else interested in the Rider surname. One of William's daughters was Mary Rider who married Jacob Dietz. She and Jacob and several other daughters, and son Reverend William Rider are buried in the Shanesville First Reformed Church Cemetery in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. In the will of William Rider Sr., he names daughter Ann and daughter Julianne. Anyone have any idea what happened to Julianne or who she married? I have been told that Ann possibly married William Gonser in Coshocton Co., Ohio. Any relatives out there? Vicky Tallent

    3. Hi Linda and List, I am constantly "on the lookout" for SCHNEIDER and I wondered if any of yours are buried in Walnut Creek Cemetery, Holmes Co., OH? I have been building a database consisting of the descendants of Johannes GERBER, d 1777 Cumru Twp. (now Reading), Berks Co., PA, the descendants' spouses, and the spouses' ancestors. Many of these migrated to Holmes Co. by way of Somerset Co., PA, before the War of 1812. Very many are buried in Walnut Creek Cemetery. Some of the most frequent surnames of this "extended family" are BERKEY, HERSHBERGER, HOCHSTETLER, KAUFFMAN, TROYER, and YODER, with MILLER being the largest. Most of the above were Amish families, but the SCHNEIDERs I am seeking, were probably Bretheren or Reformed.
