FYI... Our list's previous messages MAY eventually be accessible on the Web . The Listowner Listserv has been heated with discussions of the pros and cons of new archival methods. I have held back from telling any of my lists about Web access due to the fact there hadn't been any clear stability in the directions they were discussing until recently. December 1st is supposed to be their deadline to have it all set up, so perhaps we will start seeing some results pretty soon. There will be two methods: 1) Search the Archive of Messages for Selected Mailing Lists. You may view an example of this at http://searches.rootsweb.com/example.html. None of the lists I maintain exist at this location yet. But you are welcomed to explore what Karen has out there right now. Eventually (perhaps maybe) we will have the archive from Maiser there also. You can do single word searches or combinations using 'boolean operators'. Examples of these are: enter: family & crest if you want to locate all posts to a particular list that have both words, family <and> crest; enter Lyon | ship if you want posts with the word Lyon <or> the word ship; etc. 2) Another method of viewing old messages has been developed by Marc Nozell, a volunteer. Our list is currently not being archived but I have subscribed. As soon as Marc has things set up it will record all future messages. This method of archiving a list will be for current "threaded" messages and will allow you to follow a message forward and backwards. To access this archival method, go to http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists. This will be nice when trying to catch up from being out of town for awhile and much MUCH better than the old email method! RootsWeb Cooperative after much discussion on the Listowner's List has decided that no passwords will be required to access an Archive web page. No further discussion. Lists on RootsWeb have two choices, either participate or not-participate (losing ALL archival privileges -- email ceases to exist soon). As listowner, I made the decision to participate. It is their belief that genealogy is to be openly shared.
