Surnames: Ellis, Blocker, Montgomery, Kennedy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2YB.2ACI/2079.1564.1 Message Board Post: Powhatan Ellis and Powhatan are two different entities. Powhatan Ellis's ancestor, David Ellis built a house for Powhatan in the early Jamestown days. He married a woman named Margaret who was purportedly English. In honor of or because of actual blood connection with, Josiah and Jane (Shelton) Ellis named their youngest son, Powhatan Ellis. This Powhatan was a lawyer, educated in VA, who went out to Natchez, MS, and spent most of the rest of his life. In the 1830's he was appointed Ambassador to Mexico. He died in Richmond, VA, in 1863. Powhatan Ellis married Rebecca Winn in WA DC in the late 1820's and had two children by her, Powhatan (d. 1831 Lexington, KY) and Rebecca, who survived him and was listed as his only heir in his Richmond will. However, like you, our family story is different. There are two Ellis women who married into the Kennedy family in Natchez who claimed to be daughters of Powhatan Ellis, MS jurist. These two girls would have been born about 1800. They say they were born in Natchez, but it is more likely that they were born in VA and lived in MS, later. One prominent descendant, Julia Martha Blocker Montgomery, who died in New Orleans in 1922, stated that her grandfather was Powhatan Ellis. It's a puzzle.
