He was married to Catherine Pulse 20 Sep 1837 in Grainger County Tennessee. They divorced in 1851. A copy of the divorce decree is available from the Greene County Circuit Court in Springfield, Greene, Missouri. They were the parents of 4 children, 1) Mary Lucretia Phillips ( My great-great grandmother), 2) Lucy Jane Phillips 3) Margaret E. Phillips ( she died at age 22) 4) Sarah Ann Phillips. Some of this family is buried at Brookline Cemetary, Brookline, Greene, Missouri. He married in Newton County in 1851 to Obedience Lauderdale and they had one daughter, Francis Cornelis Phillips. Nathan J. Phillips died at Neosho, Newton County Missouri and his obituary is in the Newton County News of May 18, 1893. There is also a very nice write-up on him on pages 391-392 of the McDonald and Newton County sections of Goodspeed's County Histories published in 1888. It says he was born in Grainger County Tennessee 10 April 1819. It gives his father as Nathan Phillips and mother Winnie Martin, both born in Virginia. It says Nathan was one of 8 siblings and that he was the only one still living at the writing of this article. He was reared in Tennessee and in 1837 immigrated to Greene County, Missouri. In 1849 he went to California and in 1851 returned to Newton County Missouri. He went on 2 cattle drives to California. He also served in the State Legislature. This is getting quite long. There is quite a bit more information there if you care to look it up. He was quite a fellow. Do you have information about Sarah and William, his birthdate of death date and place and their marriage, his parents names and where born and/or died? Any help would be great. I have hit a wall with Catherine Pulse and her family. Any body have information on her family? Sincerely, Norma S. Hovey
