This declaration has provoked me to share one cemetery in Highland County with this list that is not among the fortunate to which Yolanda refers above. I have loaded the photos my husband and I have taken over the years of the Washburn Cemetery in Brushcreek Township, Highland Co., Ohio onto the following web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sidersn/countryman/washburncemetery.htm (If the URL wraps to the second line, you will need to copy and paste the separate sections into your browser window to be successful in loading this site.) I apologize for the condition of the the earlier photos. They were originally slides and were faded pretty badly before we had normal snapshots made of them. I'm including them however so you may see what the cemetery looked like when it was being maintained by the Township Trustees. The web site needs a lot of work but I thought I'd let you take a look at what must be happening to the Washburn Cemetery based upon the condition in the early 1980's when we were last there. Anyone who knows me is already aware of how much I'd like to get this cemetery cleared of the probable large trees and what must be a tremendous amount of brush by now. I neglected to take action to find help while I lived in Ohio. I simply had faith that the trustees would eventually take care of the cemetery and I was too busy raising three children and working fulltime. You know the old adage: "out of sight, out of mind". Apparently, it is not the only cemetery in Highland County in such sad, sad shape with little chance of the Township Trustees to clean them up according to a county historian I spoke with this summer. I can't forget this particular cemetery however due to the fact that it has nine and possibly ten of my ancestors buried there. They are: 1&2) James and Elizabeth (COUNTRYMAN) WASHBURN (Elizabeth was dau of Henry COUNTRYMAN of Rockingham Co., VA.) 3&4) Charles and Susannah (WASHBURN) CLUFF 5&6) George Washington and Mary Ann (ROBINSON) SCAMMAHORN 7&8) Henry and Margaret (CAPLINGER) SCAMMAHORN 9) (probably) Adam and (definitely) Mary Ann (MILLER) KEPLINGER (CAPLINGER) 10) (Adam's stone has never been found.) The cemetery is located west of Fort Hill on the road (T256B) that continues west from the entrance. The house and barn are no longer standing I am told. There was a trailer west of the old house in 1980's. The farm was at the base of Washburn Hill, just west of the gravel road that runs to Millertown and Carmel(T257A). The cemetery is off the road, up the hill north a good ways (approximately 1/4 mile?). I have also scanned copies of maps on the third page of the web site to assist in locating this cemetery. I would love to hear that the cemetery has been cleaned up but I fear this is not the case. If anyone, especially those who live or have lived in the area, have any advice as to how to tackle such a mammoth project, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks in advance! Of course I will be delighted to share my family's information with any relatives! Nancy Cluff Siders Roswell, New Mexico <siders@trailnet.com>
