    1. searchable death index
    2. Thomas E. Smalley
    3. Hello Again First the URL for the Ohio Historical Society Death Index is http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex This is not the same database that Norm passed along. His is from the Ohio Health Department ,which if I had just slowed down a little bit and looked before leaping I would have seen that. His info is for the years 1958-1967 and the Historical Society info is for the years 1913-1927 and 1933-1937. The other years of 1908-1913 and 1928-1933 will be posted later. The other URL for Ancestry is right and it works. I am sorry for the mistake and I hope you all get some help from this posting. Remember Smalley, look before you leap. Thank You for your patience Tom

    1. SEARCHABLE OHIO DEATH INDEX
    2. Thomas E. Smalley
    3. Hello People Norm Schneider sent this along to the Lawrence County and Scioto Lists and I thought it was a good idea to get it on our list also. It is a searchable Death Index for some(not all) deaths in various years. The site is at the Ohio Historical Society's page ( http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/search.com ) ( lots of good stuff here), but we got the notification from the Ancestry Hometown Daily e-mail newsletter ( http://www.ancestry.com ) I have really used the searchable database that is FREE for 10 days after it is posted. The years covered are 1913-1927 and 1933-1937. The years 1908-1913 and 1928-1932 will be added later. The death certificate number is also listed so you can order copies. Let me know if the URL works for getting to the site. I sometimes make mistakes in my attempt at typing. Enjoy and Good Luck Tom Smalley

    1. Jacob & Peter FISHER of PA & OH
    2. April Kyle & Wm R. BLADH
    3. I descend from Jacob (b.1770 PA-d.1852 OH) & Barbary __?__ (b.1772-d.1845 OH) FISHER. At least 9 children born in Highland Co., OH. Known children:(1) My John Henry (1811-1873 Iowa,md Tamor JARNAGIN); (2)Sarah B. (1803-1879 Iowa, md Joseph WOODS); & (3)Barbara (b.1828-d.aft 1858, md Leonard BUTLER & Chas. PERRY); and (4) John George (md 1835 Mary JARNAGIN). There was at least another son and 4 more daughters in this family. Jacob was thought to have been born in PA because his probable brother Peter (1755 PA-1842 Highland Co., OH) FISHER in his Revolutionary War pension request said that he was born in Lancaster Co., PA and lived there until coming first in about 1796 moved lst to Ross Co., OH for 2 years, then to Fairfield Co., OH for 1 yr. and in 1802 into Highland Co., OH. Peter was married in Lancaster Co., PA in the 1790 census but I have no knowledge of his first family. Secondly, Peter married Dolly GATE in 1821 in Highland Co., OH and had Sarah, Catherine, John (b.1828), Elizabeth (b.1830) and David (b.1833). Can anyone help me with these FISHER families? April

    3. Hi, my Jacob FISHER (b.1770 prob. Lancaster Co., PA-d.1852 Highland Co., OH) & wife Barbary __?__ FISHER had at least 2 sons & 5 daughters. His probable brother Peter (d.1842 Highland Co.,OH) FISHER was a Revolutionary War soldier and Peter's pension record said he was born 1755 in Lancaster Co.,PA. My John Henry FISHER b.1811 Highland Co., OH-d. 1877 in Page Co. Iowa. He married my Tamor JARNAGIN in 1835 in Highland Co.,OH. Tamor was the daughter of Isaac JARNAGIN (b.1776 - d.1834 Highland Co., OH) and Sarah Jane GROVE (b.1778 Loudoun Co.,VA-d. ?). Who were Peter & Jacob FISHERS parents? Isaac JARNAGIN was the son of John JARNAGIN (b.1748 Henry Co.,VA-d.1816 Highland Co.,OH) and Mary SMITH (dau. of Thomas SMITH b.1720-d.1797 of Loudoun Co., VA d. at sons in Rockingham Co., NC and Elizabeth, pos. dau. of John WITT III). John JARNAGIN (d.1816) was the son of John and Mary Bynum JARNAGIN. Sarah Jane GROVE was the dau. of John GROVE (b. abt 1746 Fairfax Co.,VA-d.bef 1830 Grainger Co.,TN, son of Wm GROVE and Elizabeth OMOHUNDRO) and Elizabeth Lambert STAPLETON. Elizabeth Lambert STAPLETON was the dau. of Thomas STAPLETON (b.abt 1719-d.1771 Loudoun Co., VA) and Elizabeth LAMBERT. Elizabeth LAMBERT was the dau. of Thomas LAMBERT (b.1683 and d.1747 in Westmoreland Co.,VA) and Joan SOUTH (d.bef 1747, dau. of George SOUTH and Isabell, possibly THOMPSON, a dau. of George THOMPSON of England, Maryland, and Northumberland & Westmoreland Cos. in VA). I think Thomas LAMBERT (d.1747) was the son of William LAMBERT (b.1646 VA who was md 1673 in Westmoreland Co.,VA to Ann SEARLES, dau. of Richard & Ann SEARLES). Sure could use some help and verifications on my families. Do you know anyone working on these families? 1. Logging Camp Accident in 1860
    2. Richard Moore
    3. My ancestor Morris Trout was killed in a logging camp accident in Highland County on or just before Feb 12, 1860, at age 49, according to our family tradition. Does anyone know of a reference to this accident, perhaps in a local newspaper, or a county history? He and his family lived in Russell Station; his widow Elizabeth Leeds Trout and their children continued to live there a short while before removing to Jasper county, Iowa. Any information about this accident will be greatly appreciated. Richard Moore, 545 South Nardo Ave, Solana Beach, CA tel 619-755-5882 ramoore@home.com

    1. RootsWeb Stressed!
    2. Nancy Cluff Siders
    3. Howdy all! NOTE: If you have recently contributed to RootsWeb and further solicitation might offend you, simply hit the delete key now. However, if you can find it in your heart, please stay tuned! We have a serious situation at RootsWeb. I've shared Brian and Karen of RootsWeb "stories" with you before. How amazed I have been that they can keep going without a break, etc. I thought maybe recent developments for which I am personally concerned should be shared with you. We could lose our ability to run our surname list if things don't ease up a little for Brian and Karen as a couple. Hopefully, you can help out. The recent storms in California have been very taxing on them. As I have shared with you, Brian has spent several 24 hour shifts keeping RootsWeb on-line; making a hair-raising trip through deep snowfall in a 4-wheel drive vehicle to LA to buy a generator. Now spammers are hitting at too fast a pace for him to get much else done. Remember Maiser? Spammers could take us down again! Instead of fighting fires, B/K had hoped to get the servers installed to provide further archives access for the lists. Needless to say, it's more frustrating than usual for them right now and our list has not experienced any down time through it all! Amazing! However, Brian and Karen ARE human [I was beginning to wonder!]. The rapid growth of RootsWeb has caused Brian to break his obvious silence and share a little of his frustration... Brian wrote Sat, 14 Feb 1998 19:21:33 -0800 to the Listowners: >I'm fighting off a wild urge to write: > > "I quit. Believe me, it would be **EXTREMELY** difficult to find replacements for Brian Leverich and Karen Isaccson! Their self-sacrifice is phenomenal! So..., if you have not donated to RootsWeb or even if you have, please reach into your pockets now to help the coop out. Last year it cost $60,000 to keep RootsWeb going; $20,000 of which B/K dipped from their own pockets. Now with the increased traffic, it will cost much more. Imagine, if every one of the 300,000 genealogists on the 2600 lists just sent one dollar, we'd have perhaps a couple years' operations costs covered plus needed equipment could be purchased! You need not fit the Member ($12) or Sponsor ($24) category slots. If you are interested, more information may be secured on these categories at http://www.rootsweb.com/ , but any amount will help! 3. Why, YES there is! There is a Historical Society but what you really need is: The Southern Ohio Genealogical Society P.O. Box 414 Hillsboro, OH 45133 The corresponding secretary, Genevieve Breakfield, is extremely helpful and they have many wonderful research books available for purchase - one of the best selections you will find anywhere, including everything you suggested and more. For example, the 1st marriage book lists this on page 63: DILL, James m. Lavina B. HIBBEN Dec. 28, 1865, by S. Steel, M.G. (OR) and the introduction to the book lists Samuel Steel as minister of the Presbyterian Church. Enjoy! 1. Whiteman, Wise, Walker, Mcdaniel, Diehl
    2. Dwight Moore
    3. Hello I'm researching the surnames Wise, Walker, Diehl, Whiteman, and McDaniel. all of these came from rockbridge county virginia in the early 1800s. Anyone who may have info. on these families please e-mail me. I am also interested in the reasons why these people moved to Highland. I know there were several other families who made this trip at about the same time. Thanks, Dwight Moore

    1. Historical Society
    2. Good evening - I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me if there is a Historical Society in Hillsboro, or some where in Highland County, and what it's address is. Is there a location where County records have been compiled and non-court related documents, such as newspapers, preserved ? Would the Hillsboro Public Library have such records ? Specifically, I would like to find where the records or files of Lavinia (Hibben) Dill b. 1843 may be kept. Also, I would like to purchase a copy of 'Folklore of Highland County' by Violet Morgan, published in 1946 by The Greenfield Printing and Publishing Co. of Greenfield, Ohio. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks George

    1. 1895 US Atlas including Highland County, Ohio

    3. Howdy Howdy! I found the following taken from Ancestry's daily newsletter interesting. I chose Ohio and found that a town of "Turkey" is shown northwest of Sinkingsprings in Highland Co., Ohio where my ancestors lived. This town is not on the map today and I don't remember anyone speaking of this town when growing up there. Got my curiosity up! Thought I'd send the information along to the list just in case it might interest someone else. You may find a similar interest for your folks' location. Take heed about the size of the file though! Only access it if you have plenty of time and lots of RAM. If you decide to copy it, you'll need lots of disk space as well. Read on... Enjoy! Nancy Listowner ============================================== 1895 Atlas Now Online! Here's a hearty congratulations to Pam Rietsch, Coordinator of the Livingston County MI - U.S. GenWeb Site. Pam has spent the last 16 months completing an Online version of the 1895 Atlas. The site can be found at: http://www.ismi.net/lcmigw The following is Pam's explanation of the project. **** Well almost 16 months after I began the project, the data entry portion of the 1895 Atlas is complete. All of the states, except Alaska (which has a map only) plus the District of Columbia have data which shows what towns where around in that time period. Each town also shows the population, the county it is located in, where in the state it is located, whether it has a post office, a railroad station or an express office. This is especially helpful if you have some sort of a record from either the 1880 census or the 1900 and in some case state census of 1885 where it shows a town that cannot be found on current maps. So many small towns over the years have either totally disappeared, or been merged with other larger towns and have for all intents and purposes vanished. The nice thing about this project is that you can also download a map of the state also to see the exact placement of your town in question. Watch the site over the next few months as I intend to do lots more to make it more user friendly....and will also be scanning in the world maps that came with the atlas. I will not have data for them, but I think the old maps could prove useful in research. The site can be found at: http://www.ismi.net/lcmigw Several people have had difficulties in printing out the maps, so I now have a special page set up with instructions on how to accomplish this feat, just a click away. If there is anything I can do that would help you to use the Atlas better, please feel free to contact me. Remember to do your "hug homework" ! Pam Proud Corporate Sponsor of RootsWeb, why not support them today for all they have done for the world of genealogy? http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html As always, the cost for this information is for you to go out and give someone a hug right now, whether they feel they need it or not because time is so fleeting, they may not be there next time you have the urge.
