Are there any existing Partition Records dating to early 1800s for Highland Co.? I obtained copies of an estate of my relative who died there in the 1820's, but it did not have a complete listing of children. As he was survived by a young second wife and many children, I was wondering if his land would have to have been partitioned, as he did not leave a will. Lookup volunteers have already given me all references to my surname from the Common Pleas Court Records" (1805-1860) McBride, which did not include a partition land case. Would those partition cases for Highland be available somewhere? Or are they lost? Wonder if any of the Butter's places you mentioned could have been named after Butters in our family tree. Possible. If you get a chance to talk with Bernice/Bernita Long, please ask her if their is any of the following in her family: William Allen Long b 4 Oct 1849-married Suzanna Frump b 2 Apr 1847. His father was John Adam(Adair)Long b 18 Feb 1824-married Elizabeth Willet b 14 Jan 1829. Johns father was William R. Long b 3 Aug 1799-married Matilda b 1802. Two of John and Elizabeths daughters married Butters. Matilda Leonna Long b 31 Mar 1854 on 15 Feb 1877 married Joseph A. Butters b 1854(Son of William Butters and Elizabeth Frump) (Elizabeth is sister to Suzanne Frump?). Mary Laverne Long b 31 Mar 1856 on 16 Sept 1875 married Zeri M. Butters b 1856(son of William butters and Elizabeth Frump). I have only been able to trace the Steel's back to Lemuel Steel b 1786 in Hartford, Conneticut. Married Sarah Dunifen. Both are buried in Good Hope Cemetery in Logan, Ohio. They had 7 children. Nathaniel Steel b 1830 in Logan County, Ohio is one of the sons. He married Mary Smith, they are both buried in Paulding, Ohio. They had 7 children also. Calvin Steel b 4 Jan 1861 in Logan, Ohio was one of their son's and he married 1st Mary Adeline Cooper and 2nd Mary Elizabeth Long b 18 June 1873 in Highland County, Ohio. This is where our Longs tie in. William Allen Long is her father. Don't know where they may have lived between Conneticut and Ohio. Or who Lemuels parents were or siblings. He may have come from Scotland or Ireland but only hearsay. Any information or connection you can make let me know. Thanks and take good care. Happy Holidays, Darlene

Butters Road is the epicenter of the CARMEL INDIANS. I drove Butters Road last year. It runs west>east. It's halfway up the hill. The terrain up the hill is quite rough. This is the area where Melungeons (Gibson, Perkins, etc.) would come down from to take jobs in local truck farms. There are stories of Carmel Indians moving north to Logan County. The county seat is Bellefontaine, which had been known as "Blue Jacket's Town". Just northwest of Bellefontaine is "Indian Lake". In a Delorme Atlas for South Carolina, there is a Butters village. It's very small, at the end of a road where the swamps take over. I will go home and try to find it again. It's located exactly where a Melungeon would go to get lost. While I do not know her ancestry, Bernice/Bernita Long is the part-time secretary for the Mowrystown Presbyterian Church, about 15 to 20 miles west of Carmel, also in Highland County, Ohio. We have a Benjamin and Eugene Steirs/Steers which in some records is Steel. We have discounted Steel, but might reconsider. They were early folks from Kentucky.

He was married to Catherine Pulse 20 Sep 1837 in Grainger County Tennessee. They divorced in 1851. A copy of the divorce decree is available from the Greene County Circuit Court in Springfield, Greene, Missouri. They were the parents of 4 children, 1) Mary Lucretia Phillips ( My great-great grandmother), 2) Lucy Jane Phillips 3) Margaret E. Phillips ( she died at age 22) 4) Sarah Ann Phillips. Some of this family is buried at Brookline Cemetary, Brookline, Greene, Missouri. He married in Newton County in 1851 to Obedience Lauderdale and they had one daughter, Francis Cornelis Phillips. Nathan J. Phillips died at Neosho, Newton County Missouri and his obituary is in the Newton County News of May 18, 1893. There is also a very nice write-up on him on pages 391-392 of the McDonald and Newton County sections of Goodspeed's County Histories published in 1888. It says he was born in Grainger County Tennessee 10 April 1819. It gives his father as Nathan Phillips and mother Winnie Martin, both born in Virginia. It says Nathan was one of 8 siblings and that he was the only one still living at the writing of this article. He was reared in Tennessee and in 1837 immigrated to Greene County, Missouri. In 1849 he went to California and in 1851 returned to Newton County Missouri. He went on 2 cattle drives to California. He also served in the State Legislature. This is getting quite long. There is quite a bit more information there if you care to look it up. He was quite a fellow. Do you have information about Sarah and William, his birthdate of death date and place and their marriage, his parents names and where born and/or died? Any help would be great. I have hit a wall with Catherine Pulse and her family. Any body have information on her family? Sincerely, Norma S. Hovey

If you contact me directly with your e-mail address, I will be happy to give you her e-mail address. I am not sure how current it is, but I e-mailed her back in april using the address and she did reply. The information that I have on Sarah Julia is as follows: Sarah Julia Marlatt b:April 04, 1817 Mercer co.; PA d:December 05, 1900, Winchester Twp., Adams Co., OH married Rueben McCune:Abt. 1840 Adams Co., OH Rueben McCune:b: October 10, 1820, Pennsylvania d: May 13, 1892, Winchester Twp., Adams Co., OH I do not have any information on Ruebens parents. However there may be a link to my Edward Riggs McCune and your Rueben McCune. They were both born in the same state. They both married girls related to the Marlatt family. Sarah Julia Marlatt parents are: Joseph Marlatt b: 1776, New Jersey d: January 25, 1864 Highland, Ohio Sarah Frew b 1780, Pennsylvania d: between 1850 and 1860 in Winchester, Adams, OH All other information on this family I received from www.familysearch.com. I did a search for Joseph Marlatt. I have been trying to obtain proof of Joseph's father who was possibly another Joseph Marlatt, but so far I have not had any luck. I have a copy of Joseph Marlatt's will but there is no mention of Sarah Julia in the will. The only family mentioned were direct lines of my family. Clarinda, her father Daniel. Daniel's sister Martha' and Martha's children Missouri and Ohio Cox. I hope this helps Linda
