Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2YB.2ACI/2080.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I have 2 suggestions for you. The first is that a cemetary in IA where people from Highland County are buried is that people have donated money to the cemetary and the old stones that were getting hard to read were replaced. I had never thought of donating money but I will from now on. The second is that where I live now by Branson, MO has a lot of smaller cemetaries that started on private land. Usually just before Memorial day they schedule clean-ups of the cemetaries. They have it printed in the paper starting 3 weeks in advance and whoever is interested shows up to help and usually has a picnic for the ones that show up. The first year might not be a good turnout but it will catch on. When things get started by small cleaned ups it takes less time each year to do it.

    1. [OHHIGHLA-L] Louisa Brubaker Hatter
    2. Happy New Year everyone!! In the 1850 census of Highland Co., Ohio, a Louisa Brubaker is living with the Peter Hatter family. She is 7 years old in this census. In this household, in addition to Louisa, are Peter Hatter and his wife Elizabeth, daughters Harriet and Lucinda Hatter. There is also an Elizabeth Camp living with them. In the 1860 and 1870 Census Louisa's name has been changed to Hatter. Louisa Hatter later married David Lawson. Would anyone be familiar with any Brubakers that lived in Highland County or other nearby counties before 1850? I would like to know who Louisa Brubaker Hatter Lawson's parents were. Perhaps she was orphaned and adopted by the Hatter family. Would appreciate any help. Thanks. Betty A. Honeycutt

The township trustees do a great job on >their upkeep. This declaration has provoked me to share one cemetery in Highland County with this list that is not among the fortunate to which Yolanda refers above. I have loaded the photos my husband and I have taken over the years of the Washburn Cemetery in Brushcreek Township, Highland Co., Ohio onto the following web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sidersn/countryman/washburncemetery.htm (If the URL wraps to the second line, you will need to copy and paste the separate sections into your browser window to be successful in loading this site.) I apologize for the condition of the the earlier photos. They were originally slides and were faded pretty badly before we had normal snapshots made of them. I'm including them however so you may see what the cemetery looked like when it was being maintained by the Township Trustees. The web site needs a lot of work but I thought I'd let you take a look at what must be happening to the Washburn Cemetery based upon the condition in the early 1980's when we were last there. Anyone who knows me is already aware of how much I'd like to get this cemetery cleared of the probable large trees and what must be a tremendous amount of brush by now. I neglected to take action to find help while I lived in Ohio. I simply had faith that the trustees would eventually take care of the cemetery and I was too busy raising three children and working fulltime. You know the old adage: "out of sight, out of mind". Apparently, it is not the only cemetery in Highland County in such sad, sad shape with little chance of the Township Trustees to clean them up according to a county historian I spoke with this summer. I can't forget this particular cemetery however due to the fact that it has nine and possibly ten of my ancestors buried there. They are: 1&2) James and Elizabeth (COUNTRYMAN) WASHBURN (Elizabeth was dau of Henry COUNTRYMAN of Rockingham Co., VA.) 3&4) Charles and Susannah (WASHBURN) CLUFF 5&6) George Washington and Mary Ann (ROBINSON) SCAMMAHORN 7&8) Henry and Margaret (CAPLINGER) SCAMMAHORN 9) (probably) Adam and (definitely) Mary Ann (MILLER) KEPLINGER (CAPLINGER) 10) (Adam's stone has never been found.) The cemetery is located west of Fort Hill on the road (T256B) that continues west from the entrance. The house and barn are no longer standing I am told. There was a trailer west of the old house in 1980's. The farm was at the base of Washburn Hill, just west of the gravel road that runs to Millertown and Carmel(T257A). The cemetery is off the road, up the hill north a good ways (approximately 1/4 mile?). I have also scanned copies of maps on the third page of the web site to assist in locating this cemetery. I would love to hear that the cemetery has been cleaned up but I fear this is not the case. If anyone, especially those who live or have lived in the area, have any advice as to how to tackle such a mammoth project, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks in advance! Of course I will be delighted to share my family's information with any relatives! Nancy Cluff Siders Roswell, New Mexico <siders@trailnet.com>

There is a James McConnell, died 17 May 1826, aged 65 yrs. There are many entries for the Garret's and McConnell's (esp. Samuel). The Strains take up more than a page just in the index. Can you narrow any of these down? Note: There was a Margaret Ross Garrett baptized as an infant on 20 June 1819, daughter of Robert W. and Sarah Garrett. Possible grandchild of the Garrett's above. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2YB.2ACI/1225.1237.1849.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: My list is literally seven feet long and has almost 400 Melungeon Surnames. The list is a compilation from several well accepted books. The authors include: Bonnie Ball, John Camden Hotten, Houston & Hird, Brent Kennedy, and Manuel Miro. I could easily add more from several newer purchases. While my interests center in COLLINS and PAINTER/POINTER in Highland County, the list does not have focus on Highland County. Some time ago, I spoke to the SOGS in Hillsboro regarding Melungeons and especially the Carmel Indians. On The Melungeon Heritage Association website is an article, the basis of a book, by Ball (or Bell) and Kessler. It covers the Carmel Indians of Highland County, Ohio and Magoffin County, Kentucky. In a previous posting, I reported, "I have nothing." That simply means that the above authors had not covered them. It does not mean that those Surnames (including DEES) are not Melungeons. It just means that they were not included by thes authors and probably also means that, if DEES is Melungeon, that DEES may have married into the Melungeons later, perhaps in the 1800s. Why do you believe that DEES is Melungeon? Have you compared your DEES physical characteristics and medical diseases with Melungeons? Phil Beltz
