    1. Highland Co Newspapers - 1800-1840
    2. Luci J. Baker
    3. Dear Listers, I am rather new to this list and have a question about the newspapers in early Highland Co. Specifically I am curious to know if there was a newspaper during the years 1800-1840? Also if there is a newspaper, if it might be available on microfilm. My ancestors, the BUZICK's, came from Highland, Ross and Fayatte Co., Ohio. I am hoping to learn more information about this family through newspapers. Thank you, Luci Baker Seattle, WA

    3. Dear Listers, I am new to this list and am in need of information. I am trying to obtain an obituary and would like to know what local newspaper or library I could contact in Highland County. The obit would be from 1975. I am also curious to know if Gleason Roberts Funeral Home still exists in Mowrystown. I am researching the family of Frank and Gladys Ludwick Anton in case any of you would happen to have a connection to this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Debi Foster Catlettsburg, KY

    1. HIBBEN - JEANS - PERIN - MCDERMOTT
    2. Hello - Last July when I visited the Highland House Museum, Jean Wallis discovered a letter inside the frame of a portrait photograph of Sarah Jane (Hibben) Jeans which was hanging in the Crusade Room. The letter was a eulogy written by Nellie P. McDermott, granddaughter. I believe that Nellie was the daughter of Kate Belle Jeans and Joseph G. Perin. Kate was married in 1873, so Nellie would have been born sometime after that. Sara Jane (Hibben) Jeans died in 1902. If anyone has information about the Jeans, Perins or McDermotts, I would appreciate hearing from him/her. Thank you. George in MA

    1. Ohio National Guard, 1864-1865
    2. John C. Rutherford
    3. This message is for all who may be interested. Since several people have asked me about the Ohio National Guard in the Civil War, it is my honor to reply. During the American Civil War, the Ohio National Guard regiments were originally part of Ohio Governor William Dennison's "Militia of the Reserve" plan, whereby citizens statewide would have militia training in case of emergencies. Most of these Militia of the Reserve units expressly asked to be enrolled as Home Guards, so that they would serve only within the state. However, Ohio Governor John Brough made a new wrinkle in this militia training plan. The U. S. War Department pressured states to put more troops in the field in early 1864. Governor Brough responded on April 25, 1864, by calling all Home Guard units the "Ohio National Guard" and activated various units around the state of Ohio by companies or by battalions and regiments for 100 days of service unless sooner discharged. This was certainly a surprise to most militia units around the state (and draws immediate parallels of Vietnam and Desert Storm National Guard units). Thus, the Ohio National Guard was born... A typical Ohio National Guard unit was the 166th O.V.I. It was organized at Camp Taylor in Cleveland, and arrived at Washington, D.C in late May, 1864. The regiment was broken up by companies to man the various forts around the nation's Capital. The unit was forced to grueling duty when Confederate General Jubal Early and his veterans made a raid toward Washington in July 1864. Most of the soldiers were kept on alert for anywhere from six to eight days in a row until Early's army retreated back into Virginia. The 166th O.N.G. did not take part in a major battle from what I can see in Whitelaw Reid's "Ohio in the War" v.2, p.696. But these veterans can be proud that they helped save Washington, D.C., from capture. John C. Rutherford
