    1. [OHHIGHLA-L] to Pat Asher
    2. Pat- I just had a chance to read the message to Norman and myself regarding your tie-ins to the GIBLER and STRAIN families. I also have tie-ins to these families through my SURBER family connections, when Lucinda SURBER married my James KENT. You seem more familiar with the Christian Union Church than I am. Do you have any idea what became of this church, or if it still exists in any form? I've traced some early churches in Mont Co by going to the Mont Co. library, but am uncertain how to trace this old church in Highland Co. Do you have any suggestions? I'm considering making a tracing attempt on Wed. afternoon of this week. Sharon

    2. Norman L. Runyon
    3. David, The Highland County Genealogical Society, officially known as "The Southern Ohio Genealogical Society" has published a book listing births and deaths for only 1856-57. The regular birth/death records, however, do start in 1867 as you mentioned. On page 44 of the 1856-57 deaths is the following entry for your query: "McDANIEL, Samuel 29 Jul 1856 68 New Petersburg Hemoptisis M W Wd Farmer Centerfield, VA" Hope this helps. 3. Hell all. I just noticed, while surfing the pages of the Ohio state library that there are death records for the year 1856 for Highland. Does anyone else know naymore about this? I was under the assumption that they didn't beging recording deaths until 1867. I am looking for the death of Samuel McDaniel, who died in 1856. If anyone can help, please drop me a line. Thanks, Dwight Moore

    1. Re: [OHHIGHLA-L] historical society and archives
    2. Norman L. Runyon
    3. Pat, I don't know but, after reading your question, I checked on A. T. Cunningham in the 1880 "History of Ross & Highland Counties, Ohio" and found the following additional information on A. T. Cunningham. I, apparently, was looking in the wrong Christian Union Church for him. On page 483 (churches in Marshall Township): "This church was organized in 1864 , by A. T. Cunningham, N. H. Lucas, B. Cravens, James Dunlap, Jacob Miller, James S. Carlisle, J. M. Fernow, James Burnett, J. L. Hughes, Isaac Milburn, Harvey Milburn, Uriah Milburn and the wives of most of these. Two years later, in 1866, a frame church building was erected in the village of Marshall, which is still occupied. The first pastors were A. T. Cunningham and Uriah Milburn. P. P. Wolf and J. W. Clise were the preachers in 1866; the former has served since that time, with the exception of one or two years. The membership is something over one hundred and twenty. A Sabbath-school of some forty members has been sustained for a few years, and is a present under the superintendence of Daniel Williams." So, Pat & Sharon, you might, also, want to check in the village of Marshall, in Marshall Township, for Rev. Cunningham. Norman Pat Asher wrote: > Norman: > > Could the A. T. 1. [OHHIGHLA-L] Animation virus is being passed.

    3. The question was asked about the following. I received the same message regarding animation. The return address was the Highland list. But it was strange as I get everything in digest form and this was a single message. So I deleted because it didn't seem right. Later receive the explanation given below from another list. It would seem that Pat has received the virus (actually a worm) - if she activated it. Certainly someone on the Highland list may be UNWITTINGLY passing it. Or the virus/worm is using Pat's address book, or someone on the Highland list address book, to propagate. Even though I deleted without activating this virus I was told to run my virus scan, then do a full scan disc, followed by a disc defrag. I know I did not spread it as I have myself in my address book and it did not come back to me. Kathleen Rizer in Dayton. 3. Peter MOORE + Mary TAYLOR = Joseph MOORE were my GG GG Grandparents and GG G Grandfather. Peter MOORE moved into Highland Co. circa 1800. One of their many children was Joseph MOORE. Looking for Peter's birth and death data, Mary's birth data and anything on Joseph. Joseph's daughter Mary MOORE married Joshua MERCER in Highland County in 1832 and eventually moved to Missouri via Indiana. Any information on MOORE or MERCER appreciated. It has been reported to me that Peter Moore originally came to the area via flatboat from northeastern KY. Anyone know this story?

    3. Hi Sharon, This looks like a partial answer to your question, although the date varies drastically from yours: According to the book "Marriage Records of Highland County, Ohio (1805-1880)" by David N. McBride and Jane N. McBride, copyright 1962, reprinted 1982, page 132: "KENT, James m. Lucinda Surber Feb. 26, 1873, by A.T. Cunningham" Then, on page vii: "CUNNINGHAM, A.T.: M.G. Christian Union Church and J.P., New Market Twp." According to the book: "History of Ross & Highland Counties, Ohio", published 1880, reprinted 1991: on page 492 (regarding New Market Township churches). Looks like the church is in the town of New Market, in Highland County: "The Christian Union Church was organized, in 1869, at New Market, where a church was built the following year. The members were: John Stewart, Mr. Graves, Adam Lemon, Abraham Strain, J. C. Stire, Sarah Wilkin, Mrs M. A. Stewart, Rachel Gibler, William Stanforth, and others. Daniel Hare, and Revs. Wolf and Milburn, were the first Preachers. A Sabbath-school i sustained during the summer." Norman Runyon [email protected] wrote: > Hi-- > > Sometime in Jan. Greta Snow Greta, Nathan was a minister, and I guess somewhat of an important man in the community. He attested to the pension application of Jacob Surber on 21 Jun 1833 in Highland Co., Ohio deposed by the county clerk at Surber's home. Jacob was too sick to go to the courthouse. He was one of the founding members of Buford Christian Church in Buford, Clay Twp., Highland Co., Ohio, along with John Surber and Rev. David Thompson. I've got sources for some of this if you want. Rick - - - - 3.5.2.2 Isabella "Iby" Surber (born 1 Dec 1823 in Highland Co., Ohio, died 28 Aug 1898 in Highland Co., Ohio) married in Highland Co., Ohio to David F. Pulliam (born 29 Sep 1822, died ca Oct 1889 in Highland Co., Ohio). Isabella's godparents were Jacob and Catherina Sorber. David was the son of Rev. Nathaniel Pulliam (born 30 May 1789 in Virginia, died 13 Oct 1869 in Highland Co., Ohio) who was married in Kentucky to Anne Galloway (born 12 Mar 1791 in Ireland, died 1 Feb 1873). Nathan and Anne moved to Clay Twp., Highland Co., Ohio in 1836, and are buried in Ruble Cemetery in Salem Twp., Highland Co. Nathan and Anne had eight children, some of which were Lucilla Pulliam, married to Eli S. Nathan was first a Methodist minister, then a United Bretheren minister, and then a Christian Church minister. He established the Buford Christian Church, being the first minister there. Nathan was asked to leave his last church because of his activities in the Masonic Lodge. He was the first Worthy Master of the Buford Masonic Lodge, in Buford, Highland Co. On 30 Oct 1843, Ibby's father Henry Surber Jr. bought two tracts of land totalling 85 acres in a bankruptcy sale and gave them "in consideration of love and affection" on 20 Jan 1844 to Ibby and David.
