I am seeking information of the family of Thomas Crumley and Elizabeth Gardner. Thomas was born 31 December 1776 in Berkeley County, Virginia, son of William Crumley and Sarah Dunn. Elizabeth was born 1 October 1780, and is usually said to have been a daughter of Henry Gardner and Catherine ----, though I believe her father was named Samuel, and that she may have had at least two brothers, Mahlon and Arthur. The Gardners were probably natives of Loudoun County, Virginia. Thomas and Elizabeth were married in Frederick County, Virginia 22 January 1801 and had fourteen children, listed below. They moved to Harrison County, Ohio c. 1812. Elizabeth Gardner Crumley died 15 May 1857. Thomas died 3 July 1861. Both buried at Dickerson M.E. Church. Children of Thomas Crumley and Elizabeth Gardner: 1) Samuel Crumley: b. 8 June 1801, Frederick County. Married 4 September 1823 to Elizabeth [Betsey] Dickerson (8 February 1804 - 12 January 1883). Samuel died 16 June 1830. Buried at Dickerson Church. Betsey survived him and remarried to Jonathan Phillips in Coshocton County, Ohio on November 21st, 1839. Four known children of Samuel and Elizabeth: Mary Jane (2 August 1824 - 28 January 1904); William (c. 1828); Elizabeth (c. 1827 - 1 August 1902) and Samuel (c. 1831). 2) Sarah Crumley: b. 26 December 1802, Frederick County. Married 12 September 1822 to Eli Dickerson (18 November 1800 - after 1860). Sarah died 8 May 1830. Buried at Dickerson Church. Four known children: Samuel (c. 1824 - before 1880); Baruch (c. 1825); Elizabeth (c. 1827) and Thomas (c. 1830). 3) Mary Crumley: b. 1805 in Frederick County. Married 14 January 1830 to Hiram Dickerson (17 June 1806 - 14 February 1883). Mary died in April 1878. Buried at Dickerson Church. Nine children: Sarah (25 September 1830 - 7 January 1906); Thomas Hudson (8 June 1832 - 31 March 1883); Elizabeth C. (10 December 1835 - 6 September 1886); Mary Dickerson (September 1837 - 3 April 1925); Hiram, Jr. (1839 - 29 or 30 June 1862); Maria J. (3 July 1840 - 20 July 1850); Ira Crumley (c. November 1841 - 1910); John Crumley (25 September 1843 - 30 June 1921) and Theodore Freylinghuysen (25 June 1845 - 2 April 1902). 4) William Crumley: b.c. 1807, Frederick County. Probably died before 29 December 1860 as he is not mentioned in his father's will. 5) Thomas Crumley: b.c. 1808, Frederick County. Married 31 August 1830 to Elizabeth Davis (c. 1813 - 18 September 1868). Moved to Wells County, Indiana. Thomas died 20 October 1853. Buried at Gearnand Cemetery, Nottingham Township, Wells County. Eight children: Ira (6 July 1832 - 11 March 1902); John (6 July 1834 - 20 August 1859); Eliza (28 May 1836 - 15 August 1923); Rachel Ann (28 January 1838 - 16 January 1872); Thomas James (15 January 1842 - 13 August 1884); Elizabeth (30 August 1844 - 15 August 1903); Samuel McGue (18 August 1846 - 16 April 1870) and Ruth Jane (18 March 1848 - after 1920). 6) Ira Crumley: b. 7 October 1809, Frederick County. Married 31 January 1840 to Jane Dickerson (30 June 1820 - 23 June 1910). Ira died 28 January 1892. Buried at Greenmont Cemetery, Harrison County. Five known children: Mary E. (b. 1843); Sarah (16 October 1844 - 7 September 1909); Hiram D. (c. October 1849 - 8 April 1911); Clara D. (c. July 1852 - 5 August 1933) and Thomas (c. November 1857 - 4 October 1936). 7) Elizabeth Crumley: b. 25 June 1811, Frederick County. Married on 2 May 1833 to Joshua Dickerson (9 November 1808 - 16 February 1898). Elizabeth died 30 July 1842. Buried at Dickerson Church. No children. 8) John Crumley: b. 6 April 1813, Harrison County. Married 17 March 1864 to Julia F. Giesey (c 1843 - 25 June 1890). John died 18 April 1865. Buried at Dickerson Church. Julia survived him and married David H. Tweedy in Jefferson County, Ohio on 5 November 1873. One known daughter: Ella Crumley (c. 1865). 9) Hannah Crumley: b.c. 1816, Harrison County. Married 17 April 1838 to Eli Glazener [or Glasenor]. Hannah was still living as of 29 December 1860. Probably left Harrison County. 10) James Crumley: b. 19 May 1817, Harrison County. Married 10 August 1837 to Margaret Nelson (29 May 1816 - 23 February 1854). James served in Company I, 13th O.V.I. He died 28 January 1864. Buried at Dickerson Church. Six known children: Thomas (b.c. 1838); Amanda (28 November 1844 - 23 July 1845); Emaly (26 May 1846 - 28 December 1846); Hannah (19 January 1848 - 14 September 1849); William (26 June 1850 - 28 June 1850) and Joseph A. (May 1851 - June 1851). 11) Aaron Wilson Crumley: b.c. 1820, Harrison County. Married 19 November 1845 to Sarah Hannah Stiers. I do not know when Aaron died. He left Harrison County and went to Muskingum County, then on to West Plains, Missouri where he was still living in 1880. I do not know whether he stayed there. Seven children: John Thomas (b. 7 December 1846); Cynthia Elizabeth (19 October 1847 - 6 December 1935); R. William (b. 19 October 1856); Emma (5 August 1858 - 9 September 1863); Emmitt (b. 5 August 1858); Mollie Virginia (b. 3 April 1863) and Harry Madison (3 December 1868 - 13 April 1931). 12) Joseph Crumley: b.14 April 1821, Harrison County. Married 10 October 1850 to Elizabeth A. Crabtree (14 February 1829 - 22 April 1905). Joseph died 15 December 1907 in Dennison, Mill Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Buried at Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville. No children. 13) Emily Crumley: b. 9 April 1822, Harrison County. Married 19 September 1854 to William Barkhurst (24 March 1817 - 10 February 1890). Emily died 16 November 1887 in Morgan County, Ohio. Buried at Rosseau Cemetery, Union Township, Morgan County. Four children: Thomas C. (21 November 1855 - 29 October 1898); William H. (21 August 1858 - before 1929); Mary Amanda (2 December 1859 - 29 December 1934) and Emily Jane (b. 5 October 1861). 14) David Crumley: b.c. 1827, Cadiz Township, Harrison County. Married Susanna Moore (2 November 1826 - 17 February 1878). David was admitted to the Harrison County Infirmary on 15 November 1899. He died 4 March 1901. Susanna is buried at Dickerson Church. David may be there, or he may be buried in the Infirmary Cemetery. There is no record of him in either place. Five known children: Caroline Elizabeth (10 September 1850 - 17 April 1854); Mary M. (c. 1852); Alverdon (?) J. (c. 1856); Henry H. (c. 1858) and William P. (c. July 1859). Apart from Caroline's grave at Dickerson Church, I have found no sign of any of the children after the census of 1860. I am descended from Mary Crumley by way of John Crumley Dickerson.
