The family line goes back to Cogans who were living in Sandy Twp., Tuscarawas Co., Ohio by 1820. The name was often spelt Kogan, along with other variations. It seems likely that this family came from Bedford Co., Pa., and were of German origin. (They were almost certainly not Irish or English. They were quite likely related to the Kooken family of this area.) There appear to have been 5 brothers: Jacob, Daniel, Samuel, John, Michael and Joseph, born between 1790 and 1815, all of whom had at least one son. Most of these brothers moved away from Tuscarawas County, and by 1900 their descendants were, or had been, in the following counties: in Ohio: Stark, Carroll, Coshocton, Holmes, Jackson, Highland, Lucas, Cuyahoga, Portage
