The Harrison Telegraph, Cadiz, Ohio, Wednesday, August 29, 1821 The following names were taken from a listing of road expenditures. In the interest time and space I am only listing dates, townships and surnames within each townships. The expenditures list the names of people whose land was next to the road or bridge being worked on and for people doing the work on the roads. In looking at the expenditures for what the people were paid, it looks like most of these are for services in clearing and preparing roadways. A note of interest, a wage for labor per hour in 1820 ranged from 37½ cents to 62½ cents, for ploughing they received $1.50 a day, for providing a horse and cart $1.00 a day, and for providing a 4 horse team they received $2.00 a day. Also I noted that there was an expenditure for whiskey -- 6¼ gallons for hands, 50 cents per gallon. Now I guess it is all in the interruption of the meaning of "hands" as to whether this is interesting or not.
