    3. Thanks to some responses I've received about various Johnston and Morrison families, and some homework that I've done, I've now narrowed my focus of interest in this county down to something I can work with. I'm researching the following families (all in Salem Township): George F. Johnston (middle name probably Francis) I found him isted as George F. Jhnston in the 1830 census of Salem Township. He may be the same George Johnston that died 1839 in New Hagerstown, Carroll, OH. If so, his wife was Martha, and had a son named Francis. This George (father of Francis) was supposed to have come from Salem Township, and since he is the only George in the census there, odds are it's him. However, the dates on the tombstone don't match George's data in the census. Andrew Johnston I found him in the 1820 and 1830 censuses of Salem Township. In 1820, he is listed as Andrew Jonston. Joseph Johnston I found him in the 1800, 1810, 1820 & 1830 censuses os Salem Township. In 1820 he was listed as Jonston, and he lived next door to Andrew Johnston. I believe that Joseph is probably the father of both George and Andrew. Thomas M. Johnston I found him in the 1830 census of Salem Township, living near Joseph and Andrew. I'm suspicious, however, of his relation to the family of Joseph. He appeared to be living with many brothers and sisters. Why would half of Joseph's children be living with Joseph and the other half with Thomas? However, Francis Johnston (son of George) named one of his children Joseph and another Thomas M. John Johnston I found him in the 1830 census of Salem Township, living near George. I suspect that he is NOT of the same family. I think he was a recent immigrant, the father of Sarah Ann Johnston. I suspect his wife might have been named Nancy (I'll explain why below). In a story written by a daughter of Sarah Ann Johnston of New Hagerstown, Carroll, OH, it says that there were 2 Johnston families that were not blood related living in the same community in Pennsylvania (definately the Congruity church community of Salem Township, Westmoreland). It says that Francis was born in PA in 1808, and Sarah Ann was born in Ireland 1811, and came to America 1822. Then, it says that one of Francis' sisters married one of Sarah's brothers. Next bit of information: Sarah Ann Johnston married Alexander Morrison in Congruity Church, Salem Township in the 1830s. There was a James Morrison living with a younger brother (Alexander's age) in the 1830 census of Salem Township. He lived within four houses from both the Joseph Johnston family and the Thomas M. Johnston family. I DON'T think either of these families are the family of Sarah Ann. We know Joseph was in Salem Township since 1800, but Sarah didn't come from Ireland until 1822. I DON'T think that Thomas M. and Sarah are related. This is because Thomas M. was a name of one of Francis' children. I think he's probably in the George Johnston famliy. However, if Sarah had a brother that married another Johnston (one of George's children), that Johnston could have been Thomas. I, however, believe that this Thomas M. Johnston is the Thomas Johnston that married Catherine Foster in Congruity Church. The Foster family lived right near the George Johnston family. Finally, I believe the children of Alexander Morrison and Sarah Ann Johnston tell something about the names of their parents. The first four names of the children were: Margaret, Samuel, John and Nancy. I already know the mother of James and Alexander Morrison was named Margaret. She shows up in the 1840 census of Salem Township on the same land that James and Alexander lived (with an older woman) in the 1830 census. The father was apparently long deceased, as there were no Morrisons in the 1820 census. 1) Margaret was named after Alexander's mother. 2) Samuel was probably named after Alexander's father. There was an Alexander Morrison in the 1800 census of Salem Township, but at that time the census was done alphabetically, not in order of where the houses were, so it's hard to see where he lived. 3) John was probably named after the father of Sarah Ann Johnston. There was a John Johnston of the correct age in Salem Township, but his daughter was 10-15 years old in the 1830 census, and Sarah would have been 18. That could have been a mistake by the census taker, though. 4) Nancy was probably the name of the mother of Sarah Ann. This is PURE SPECULATION from the names, but it seems that both Johnston families were very traditional in the naming patterns of the children. For example, the third son is supposed to be named after the father, and Alexander's third son was named Alexander Johnston Morrison. So, what I really need are some tombstones! Is there a cemetery listing for the Congruity church cemetery? Can I pay someone to take a walk and look for me? I have been there, but at the time I was only researching my Borland family. I saw some Johnston tombstones, but I had no idea they were even related to me. I hadn't traced my Johnstons back to PA yet. I even remember a John Johnston tombstone because it was kind of a nice one, real old style. I need some dates and names of spouses to help me. I'm positive my family is burried there! I expect to find Samuel & Margaret Morrison burried together. I expect to find a John Johnston burried next to a Nancy! Can anyone help? Thanks, and I hope this information is useful to others. Kevin Borland Researching Borland, Gregg, Johnston, Morrison & Forbes in Westmoreland County I'm sending this to the Harrison County post because I also believe that some of the Johnstons in that county tie in to these lines too.
