James Article from: The Freeport Press, Freeport, Ohio Wed., Dec. 15, 1915 JOHN MORTON'S LETTER Freeport, O., Dec. 8, 1915 Here's a short reminiscence of the Sudduth family written at the request of Samuel Sudduth of Skullfork and partly instructed buy him. There were three brothers whose names were John, Elias and Isaac, who resided in Farquar-Co, Virginia, away back in Colonial times. Isaac Sudduth was one of the men who fought in the Revolutionary war and helped America to come out from under the yoke of the English government. Those three boys, John, Elias and Isaac, married sisters whose names were Williams. In the course of time they drifted from Virginia to Harrison Co, Ohio, and first settled near Minksville on Brushyfork creek between Deersville and Cassville. John Sudduth had a daughter, whom for convenience we will call Mary, and his brother Elias had a son whose name was Roddum. In due time those double and twisted cousins were united in marriage. To them were born three sons and three daughters - John, James and Isaac, and Cassie, Malissa and Jane. John was crushed to death in the Robert Moore coal bank east of Elbow many years ago, by a large stone falling from the roof upon him, while in the prime of youth. James married Hester Anne Quillen, daughter of Stinson Quillen, who was born and raised near Westchester. To them were born three sons, all said to be ministers of the gospel. James Sudduth died very suddenly many years ago in Westchester, Isaac, youngest son of Roddum Sudduth, married his second or third cousin, daughter of Elias Sudduth, who was a son of Isaac Sudduth heretofore mentioned, and drifted off to Nebraska many years ago. Now comes this name Elias Sudduth, mentioned at the beginning of this letter. He was married twice. His first wife was Susan Johnson, daughter of Benjamin Johnson of near Minksville. To them were born four children, Dorcas, Nubatia, Nancy and a boy who died in infancy. Dorcas married Samuel Hines. Nubatia married Morris Wood. Nancy married George McConnell who was a son of James McConnell who many years ago run a tanyard on Craborchard creek in Freeport-tp, and also an old soldier of the war of 1812. To this union were born eleven children, Jas, Frank, Jack, Bert, Al, Thomas, Richard, Malissa, Bell and Mary Anne. The three daughters by Elias Sudduth's first marriage all lived to a ripe old age. Dorcas died at the age of 98 years, Nubatia died at 96 and Nancy died at 94. The second marriage of Elias Sudduth was with Miss Margaret Garret. To that union were born 12 children, Hiram, Henry, Harrison, Turner, Enoch, Samuel and Levi, Susan Tacy, Amanda, Debora and Emma. Two of the boys, Henry and Harrison, were out in the war of the rebellion. Harrison was in the Battle of the Wilderness and was wounded on the 6th of May, 1865, from which he never fully recovered, and finally caused his death. He was in the army three years and it might be said, gave his life for his country. Henry was out for three years, then re-enlisted and served a year in the 98th, making four years in the service. Those living of this set of children are so widely separated that it would be almost impossible to trace their lineage. The only one now living around here of that set of children is Samuel, who owns and resides on the farm known many years ago as the McElroy farm, and who dictated a goodly portion of this letter. Samuel Sudduth is now living with his third wife. He was first united in marriage with Nancy Fowler, and to them were born two sons and two daughters, Lafayette and Elias, who married cousins named Kaiser, and live near Hendrysburg: and Emma who married Kilpatrick and Annetta who married Armstrong, both of Newposr, Tuscarawas-co. He was united in marriage the second time with Amanda Wineman, and the third time with Maria Smith. There were no children born to either of the last two marriages. The old set of the Sudduth family were certainly very long lived, as Isaac, the old Revolutionary soldier, died at the age of 104 years. The Sudduths were almost equal to the fighting Guthries mentioned in the Press a few weeks back. Altho' they were not all brothes in this instance, they were closely allied to each other. Isaac Sudduth in the Revolutionary War. George McConnell, who married Nancy Sudduth, and her son James, also Samuel Hines who married Dorcas Sudduth, and the two Sudduth boys already mentioned, brings up the total to five who were in the army to help put down the rebellion of 1861-1865.
