Hey, Good Idea, Let's get a discussion going on the Porters of Harrison Co. I very much doubt that mine tie in Arlene's but who knows. E. Springfield is on the very north east corner of Harrison Co. just across the line into Jefferson Co. And Carroll Co, where James was born was still almost brand new in 1836. I would love to know James's who James Leslie's parents were. I have lots of information on Mary Jane's family. Her great grandfather ( Jonas Grove) fought in the Rev. War. Serena in Michigan 1 - James Leslie Porter Born - 9 Sep 1836 Carroll Co, Ohio Died - 17 Jan 1916 Note - J. Leslie is a carpenter, and he and his family are living in E. Springfield, Salem Twp. in 1880. His mother was born in Ireland and his father in Virginia. James L. and Mary have only Homer living at home in 1900 in Saline Twp, but in 1910 they are back in E. W. Porter of Jewett as informant. She is buried at Jewett. 2 - Marie E. Porter Born - Dec 1866 E. Springfield, Jefferson Co, Ohio Died - 8 Jun 1913 Jewett, Harrison Co, Ohio Note - The 1900 census shows Mary E., married 13 years and has had two children, both still living. !DC 13/34661 at OHS. !Obit: Steubenville Weekly Gazette, June 12, 1913. sp- James A. Copeland Born - 3 Dec 1862 Salem Twp, Jefferson Co, Ohio Mar. - 1 Jun 1889 Died - 21 Feb 1930 Jewett, Harrison Co, Ohio Son of John A. Copeland & Lucinda Strayer Note - In 1900, James A. is a laborer at the marble works, living in Jewett Village in Harrison Co. In 1910, he has become a monument agent. By 1920, he has become a marble cutter and is still living in Jewett. Loyal H. is living at home, but James' wife is listed as Susie M. (Susan M. Ramsower-Osborne) Birth/Death: !DC 30/10051 with H. W. Porter as informant. He is buried at Jewett. 3 - Howard William Copeland Born - Mar 1892 Ohio Note - Howard W. in 1900, he is William H. in 1910 and then back to Howard W. in 1920 where he lives in Jewett Village and is a telegraph operator for the rail road. In 1920 he states that his mother was born in Iowa. sp- Ethel Margaret Hilbert Born - 10 Nov 1891 Germano, Harrison Co, Ohio Dau of W. F. Hilbert & Laura Bell Long Note - Ethel is 28 on the 1920 census. Could this be the Ethel Williams, same birth date, d. Sept 1975 in Cleveland per the Social Security Index? 4 - James Hilbert Copeland Born - 1 Nov 1917 Jewett, Harrison Co, Ohio Note - Hilbert is 2 1/2 in 1920. 4 - Child Copeland Born - 17 Aug 1920 Jewett, Harrison Co, Ohio 3 - Loyal Herbert Copeland Born - Oct 1897 Annapolis, Jefferson Co, Ohio Note - Loyal is 21 and living with his father in 1920. The Ohio WW1 book says he enlisted 7 July 1918 at age 20 9/12, 2 - Homer Groves Porter Born - 17 May 1869 Ohio Died - 22 Sep 1915 Salem Twp, Jefferson Co, Ohio Note - Homer and Lara are living in E. Springfield in 1910. They have been married for only one year. His !DC 15/49989 with H. W. Porter as informant says he was born in Iowa. He is buried at Jewett. sp- Laura H. Harrison Born - 23 Dec 1872 North Twp, Harrison Co, Ohio Dau of William C. Harrison & Elizabeth Ann Waddington Note - Lara is 37 on the 1910 census, and she is Lara H., widow, living alone in E. Springfield and running a farm in 1920. 2 - Harry W. Porter Born - 18 Dec 1875 E. Springfield, Jefferson Co, Ohio Died - 9 Feb 1944 Jewett, Harrison Co, Ohio Note - Harry was just four years old in 1880. In 1900, Harry was living with his brother-in-law James Copeland in Jewett, where he was a furniture dealer, and in 1920 where he is a retail furniture merchant. In 1927 H. Harry is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Jewett. sp- Myra Jane Loyd Born - 5 Aug 1880 Ohio Mar. - 2 May 1900 Died - 11 May 1962 Harrison Co, Ohio Dau of Steven P. Loyd Rev. & Lucinda J. Note - Myrna Jane and Harry were newly-weds in 1900. She is called Jean in the History of Jewett. 3 - Dorothy L. Porter Born - 16 Jun 1903 Jewett, Harrison Co, Ohio Died - 7 Nov 1983 Bowerston, Harrison Co, Ohio Note - Dorothy was six on the 1910 census and 16 in 1920. Birth/Death: !Obit: Steubenville HS, November 7, 1983. It gives her parents as Harry and Jane Loyd Porter. She is survived by two aunts and several cousins. She never married and is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Jewett.
