A Carroll Family Legend This story was told many many years ago by my g g g grandfather Anthony Wayne CARROLL who was born in western Pennsylvania in 1806, and who resided in Licking Co. from 1826 and 1870 where he raised a large family near Granville. His first wife was Balinda ROOT of Massachusetts, and he married 2nd Mrs. Cordelia Orpha (Green) Linnell. If the incident below sounds familiar to anyone please contact me. I suspect this John may have been related in some way to my Anthony Wayne Carroll. His parents, Philip and Mary CARREL of Jefferson/Harrison/Carroll Counties (the boundaries kept changing) did not raise Anthony since his father died during the War of 1812, and Anthony was reared by another (unknown) family in central Ohio. "A man named John was a farmer who was called away to war (Revolutionary or 1812?), and while he was gone he missed his mortgage payments, and found upon his return that his farm had been repossessed. He refused to leave and the sheriff was summoned. In a fit of rage he killed the sheriff and spent 10-years in prison. Upon his release he moved to Ohio and took a job in a stone quarry. Sometime later the men he worked with learned of his prison record and began to tease him about it. One day John again lost his temper and killed one of his co-workers who was taunting him. He was again convicted and served another ten-years in prison. After his eventual release he became a model citizen, and never again resorted to violence."
