    3. I ran across this "proof" that Captain Robert Gilmore's Company was actually from Jefferson County, Ohio. It is contained in Mary Swan's pension application for her husband's War of 1812 service. The OHS lists Gilmore's Company as from "County Unknown". Eric Olson Pages 129-130-131-132. Vol. 1. On this 3d day of December 1878 before me, the Judge of the Probate Court, a Court of record of said County, personally appeared Mary Granfell, aged eighty (80) years, a resident of the village of Franklin (Tappan P. O.) Harrison County Ohio, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Thomas M. Granfell, who served the full period of fourteen days in the military service of the United States in the war of 1812, and who was the identical Thomas M. Granfell who in Capt. Gilmore's Company ----Regt. of Ohio Militia at ---- on the --- day of --- 181-, and was honorably discharged at----- on the --- day of ---- 181-, that she was married under the name of Mary Swan to said Thomas M. Granfel on the 4th day of January 1816 by -- Day Esq., a Justice of the Peace at Jefferson County Ohio, near Steubenville, there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that her said husband died at said village of Franklin, Harrison County Ohio on the --- day of --- 1845, and that she has not remarried since his death; that she will support the Constitution of the United States; that she is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that as widow of said Thomas M. Granfell she received a land warrant for eighty acres under the Act of Congress of September 28th, 1850; that said warrant, as she is informed by R. Sherrard Esq. of Steubenville Ohio, who procured the same for her, is No. 11,803; that she received another warrant under the Act of March 1855 for eighty acres, but she does not remember the No. of the same, and has no means, at present, of ascertaining; that she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension rolls of the United States under the provisions of the act approved March 9, 1878, and hereby constitutes and appoints J. M. Garven of Cadiz Ohio her Atty. to prosecute her claim and procure the issuance of a pension certificate to her; that her Post Office is at Tappan P. O. Harrison County Ohio, and her residence is Franklin, Harrison Co. Ohio. 2 Witnesses: William H. Russell Mary (her mark) Granfell Annie E. Russell Also personally appeared Wm H. Russell and Annie E. Russell persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say they were present and saw Mary Granfell, the claimant make her mark to the foregoing declaration, and that they Know her to be the person she represents herself to be and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Russell Sworn to and subscribed before me this 3d day of December 1878 and I certify that the contents of the above declaration were fully made Known and explained to the applicat and witnesses before swearing including "November" erased and "December" added and that I have no interest, direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim. " Application for Bounty Land State of Ohio Jefferson County, ss: On this twelfth day of April A. D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty (?) personally appeared before me a "Notary Public" within and for the County and State aforesaid Mary Granfell aged 54 years, a resident of Harrison County in the Stat of Ohio, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow Thomas Granfell deceased who was a Private in the company commanded by Captain Robert Gilmore, in the first Regiment of Ohio Militia commanded by Major Thomas B. Jessup in the War with Great Britain, declared by the United States on the 18th day of June, A. D. 1812, that her said husband was drafted at Jefferson County in the State of Ohio on or about the 1th day of February A. D. 1813 for the term of Six Months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of Six Months and was honorable discharged at Lower Sandusky on or about the first day of September A. D. 1813. She further states that she was married to the said Thomas Granfell in Jefferson County Ohio on the 4th day of January A. D. 1816 by one George Day Esq. a Justice of the Peace and that her name before her said marriage was Mary Swan that her said husband died at Harrison Co. Ohio on the 23d day of April A. D. 1845 and that she is now a widow. I authorize John H. Miller Esq. of Steubenville Ohio to receive from Washington City my Bounty Land warrant. She further declares she has heretofore made application for bounty land under the act of September 28, 1850 and received a land warrant for 80 acres No. 32,277(or 99) which she has legally disposed of and it cannot now be returned. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the additional bounty land to which she may be entitled under the act approved the 3d day of March 1855, never having received nor applied for bounty land under this or any othe rAct of Congress except as above stated. "Obituary: Grandmother Granfell died at her home this place on the 15th inst., and was buried in the Feed Springs grave yard on the 17th. Her age was about 85 years."
