    3. The following website contains information on the churches in the various "Districts" of the United Methodist Church located in Eastern Ohio. I believe that both Harrison and Jefferson County churches are in the St. Clairsville, OH District. I tried to check out for certain if this is the case, but the district appears to load very slowly or is in process of being updated online. What is now the "United Methodist Church" is the result of a series of mergers beginning with "The Methodist Episcopal Church" which split during the Civil war into two segments, "North" and "South." At around the same time there was also a "Methodist Protestant Church." Later, the three merged to form the "Methodist Church." The most recent merger which created the "United Methodist Church" was with the "Evangelical United Brethren Church." So, if you are researching any of the above historical churches, you most likely address your questions to the "Eastern Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church." Each conference has a "Conference Historian" who would most likely be the one to contact for guidance as to where to look for specific local churches that either still exist or were closed by the Conference. Local churches do not "belong" to the local congregation, but like the Presbyterian and many other denominations, are the property of the Conference they are located within. Their website is: http://www.eocumc.com/ I hope this is of some help to you. Ed
