Surnames: Maxwell,Henderson,Shuss,Worstell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1YB.2ACI/782 Message Board Post: "Yesterday In Jewett", compiled & printed by The Jewett Bicentennial Committee, Jewett, OH, July 1977 (compiled abt 1976). At pgs. 3& 4: Fairview to Jewett The first house in Fairview was built on the north side of Main Street on lot no. 37. John Stahl sold and conveyed lot no. 37 to Samuel Courtright on February 28, 1852 and Courtright erected the first house. This house, built of logs, burned and was replaced by the present home on that lot, now the Austin Gross residence. Fairview as such disappeared in 1881. Early in that year a suit was filed asking that the name be changed to Jewett. Samuel Arbaugh, Joshua Kimmel, J.R. Roberts, R.A. Mack, Robert T. Custer, T.W. Fouts, Samuel Mikesell, J.H. McQuire, Hiram Lucas, D.W. Hess, George Lucas, Daniel Maish, T.T. Chalfant, J.W. Denny, John Patton, M.L. Hauch, Fred R. Maish, John A. Roberts, Uriah Simmons, A. Mendendhall, C.D. Beabout, James Aiken and George Wirt, in that order, filed by their attorney, John M. Garvin, a suit in the court of Common Pleas of Harrison County asking for a change in the name of the then Village of Fairview to Jewett. This action was taken on the seventh of January. They submitted to the court the following reasons: 1. The Post Office name is Jewett, sonamed for an official of the railroad. 2. There is another village of Fairview in Guernsey County, Ohio. 3. There is still a third Fairview in Ohio. 4. Great inconvenience to the citizens in mixture of names and mails. 5. There is no other city or village named Jewett in Ohio. 6. Practically all the residents and citizens of the village want the name changed. Notice of the request, as required by law, was published in the Cadiz Republican. The court heard the case on January 29, 1881. It was ordered and adjudged that the name of Fairview be changed to Jewett. This proceeding cost $6.30 in addition to the attorney fee. Ever since January 29, 1881, this town has been called Jewett. The change of name is recorded in appearance Docket "I" at page 418, Journal "L" at page 252, Execution Docket "R" at page 275, and recorded "T" at page 204 in the said court.

    1. [OHHARRIS] Joseph Wilson, 1833
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wilson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1YB.2ACI/779 Message Board Post: In a deed, dated November 23, 1833, and recorded in Perry Co., OH, Joseph Wilson of Harrison County jointly conveyed his interests in property in Perry County to his brother, Samuel Wilson, who was identifed as a resident of Clark County at that time. There are two Joseph Wilson's in the 1840 census for Harrison Co., one in Athens Twp. (20 and under 30, married, no children) and one in Moorefield Twp. (40 and under 50, married, 7 sons, 5 daughters). The former is likely, but not conclusively, the Joseph Wilson mentioned in the 1833 deed. Neither is consistent with the Joseph Wilson, age 32, in the 1850 census. Joseph Wilson was obviously of legal age in 1833, because he signed the deed, but not in 1823, when his father's will was signed, without mentioning him by name. Therefore, his birth date is most likely between 1802 and 1812. I am interested in any further information on Joseph Wilson, especially other recorded deeds or wills in Harrison Co. that might suggest a later residence, or any evidence of a marriage, likely after 1833.

Ridgeview is the only one I know about. What family names are you looking for? Robert Anderson (elder in 1862) and Samuel Buchanan (a ruling elder 1819) were among some of the early members of the Ridge Presbyterian Church, the oldest religious organization in Archer twp and one of the oldest Presb churches in Harrison Co. Rev Robert Herron served the church for 26 years. The Hanna book has lots of data on Harrison Co. I don't have much hope for finding old records. Some of the elders probably took them for "safe keeping."
