    1. [OHHARRIS] Groves/Wilson/Gardner/Thompson
    2. Earlier this year there was some discussion on a Thompson Family. I was wondering if someone could help me with some death dates. Samuel and Mary Copeland Groves six children born in Jefferson Co, but raised them in Harrison Co. They were: Oscar Benton Groves who married Jessie Alice Lee( 1882-1981). I have Jessie's obit and it says that her husband died in 1963, but I have not been able to prove that or find a more exact date. Anthus Mae Groves (1882-1956) married William T. Wilson. I have her obit, but when did William die? Amanda Eva Groves married William L. Gardner. I have no information on this family. Clara E.(Carrie) Groves married Fred A. Thompson. I have birth dates of 21 Feb 1891 and 16 June 1888 respectivly for them, but no idea where or when they died. Lucie E. Groves married Clarence Stewart. I have obits for both of them. Lizabeth Maude (Bessie) Groves married James Forrest Hosterman. I found an obit for James, but would like to know when Bessie died. Most of them are probably buried at Fairview Cemetery in Jewett. I would like to find obits if possible, but without death dates... Serena in Michigan

    3. While some of the Germans dwelling in Russia and Ukraine learned the local languages and adoped Slav customs, manyremained Germans, living in German-speaking towns with German names, often under the legal system known as Magdeburg law, which took its name from the German city of Magdeburg. As early as the twelfth century German adventures, merchants and missionaries were active in the Baltic region and Estonia, names which have been long established in these regions. Thus ,by the time that famly names were developing, the German culture and language had been broadly diffused throughout Europe. The German family name Best is classifided as being of personal name origin.According to scholars the oldest and most pervasive type of suename is derived from a given name. Such family names may be derived from a parental first name from the font name of the grandfather or indeed a more remote ancestor of the original bearer of the surname. With regard to the family name Best, it indicates son of Best ,a pet form of the first name Sebastian, which is, in turn, a derivative of the Greek Sebastianos ,meaning revered, venerable, In the middle ages, parents were encouraged to name their children after saints in hope of thus evoking the protection of the particular saint.According to legend,St.Sebastion was a tribune in the Roman imperial army, but was put to death under the Emperor Diacletian for his Christian beliefs. In the fifteenth century, the cult of St. Sabastian was widespread in southern Germany and he was the patron saint of Nurnberg.Variants of the name Best include Beste and Bast.

    3. German surnames may also be encountered in Russia and Ukraine while interestlingly enough Slav names are also frequently documented in Germany, particularly in Eastern Gemany. Following the Mongel invasions in the thirteenth century, the authorities in the Ukraine and Russia recruited German merchants and artisans, who may have numbered one or two members of the Best lineage. To revitalize towns which had been devastated by the Mongol hordes. In the eighteenth century,at the invitation of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great,German settlers established themself in the fertile lands in the region of Volga river, west of the Ural mountains ,perhaps some adventurous member of the Best family being included amongst them. These Volga Germans eventually numbered seven thousand and a significant number remain in Russia in this day. Interestingly the mother of Vladimir Llyich Hiyanov (Lenin),was herself a Volga German.

    3. Distinguished names such as that borne by the Best family have been recorded in Germany proper and in other regions of Europe from medieval times. Native German surnames are commonly found in Switzerland,Austria,Luxembourg and Alsace-Lorraine,as well as in Germany proper. In addition ,there are other European regions where German family name occur as a result of specific historical circumstances. Among these areas are Siehenburgen ( Seven Castles), a territory in the region of Transylvania, Located within the borders of the modern nation of Romania. In or around the year of 1150,a large number of settlers from the Moselle region of Germany were settled in this area, where they were referred by the native as (Saxons) the term community applied to all Germans by peoples of the Balkins. Interestiingly enough, this occurred a century before the establishment of Berlin. Indeed ,ancestors of the illustrious Best family did not see the documented birth of the city of Berlin untill the year 1244,several years after that of its sister city Kulin. The two towns were established for geographical and mercantile reasons,as they commanded a natural east-west trade route over the Spree River much as towns on the main commanded a north-south route with both rivers serving peoples on each side, including no doubt the honorable forefathers of the Best family.

    3. One of the earliest reference to this name or a variant is a record of one Best der junge, who is listed in documents from 1441.However ,research is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented earlier tan above indicated date. Johann Jacoby Best and Catharinia Schneider were married in Weitersladl, Starkenburg,Hesse,on November 27,1677 and Jacobus Best ,son of Lorentius and Eva Best ,was christened in Arenberg, the Rineland,on October 7,1766.Notable bearers of this name include Wilhelm Best (1683-1719),the jurist and Albert Johan Freiherr (barron) de Best (died 1804), the army officer. This name was introduced to America as early as 1767 in which year we find a record of the emigration of one Heinrich Best ,who settled in Pennsylvania. The name could of course have been first introduced to that country at an earlier date.
