John Norman (spelled NORMON on the census) is living in Short Creek Twp in 1830. I believe he later moved to Tuscarawas County. Does anyone have any information on his family, offspring or antecedents?? The underground railroad stations mentioned are in Colerain Township in Belmont County. Joshua Cope was probably the most prominent Underground Railroad Conductor in that part of Ohio. Cope's mill (known locally as Haynes' Mill) was on Martins Ferry Pike about 2 miles SE of Colerain. The runaways were hidden behind the millrace. It was the first stop on the Railroad after crossing the Ohio River at Martins Ferry. From Colerain, they went to Mount Pleasant which was a dominantly Quaker settlement. Colerain is only several miles from the Harrison County Line. The story of the Underground Railroad in Belmont County is well documented in the book, "Bonnie Belmont". Joshua Fox is buried at the Concord Meeting House near Colerain. His farm is located on Route 250 in Colerain. It is now known as Quaker Acres and is owned by a friend of mine. The story about Sarah Fox mentioned the underground railroad in Harrison County. My search of the web didn't come up with anything except for two that looked promising but weren't available. If you would be willing to email me a copy of Sarah Fox's picture, I would love that. My reason is more history and less family on this one. When my father first went into the Navy (the 1950's) he acquired a souvenir coin struck from the Constitution which he carried on his travels to duty stations all over the world. On the coin is a depiction of the Constition with at full sail. I loved looking at the coin as a child and have it now. I printed out your transcription (thank you!) and forwarded it to my father. His grandfather and great grandfather came from Harrison County and I just think it is kind of poetic that a descendant of folks from Harrison County helped the Constitution continue its travels long after it was decommissioned and struck for parts. I am: kjwilli5@cox.net Thank you!

S. Frigate "The Constitution," which became famous during the War of 1812. This venerable lady is MISS SARAH FOX, 91, a grandaughter of JOSIAH FOX, who drafted the plans in 1794. Much dispute has arisen in recent years as to whether the "Constitution" was designed by JOSHUA HUMPHREY, a Philadelphia shipbuilder, who was creditied with its drafting, or JOSIAH FOX. However, after over 20 years of research work, that has carried him into several states, MR. ERNEST J. WESSEN of Mansfield, has at last uncovered data that leaves MR. FOX as the designer, without a question. He has ransacked attics, examined hundreds of documents covering the subject in his quest for the designer and is preparing a book which will be published the first of the year, portraying the history of the "Constitution." MISS FOX wants no fame or glory for herself, but is mighty proud to have her grandfather get the honor that is due him for the shaping of our first navy. A few years ago when the "Constitution" was being rehabilitated, the funds being furnished by donations from schoolchildren, a number of the pieces of timber from Harrison county were used in its reconstruction. Returning to MISS FOX, who will be 91 years of age on November 14, she was born near Georgetown to CHARLES JAMES and ESTHER COOPER FOX, and was one of a family of four children. Her father settled in Harrison county in 1839, being one of the pioneer famlies. MISS FOX is suprisingly active for one of her years, and takes an active interest in the affairs of the world, eargerly looking forward to the daily papers, and is well versed on all current topics. The above picture was taken two weeks ago. A typical Hicksite Friend, she has lived a useful life and many kindnesses have been bestowed upon unfortunates by this little old lady without thought of reward. Being noted for her charitable disposition, she has given thousands of dollars to the colored schools, Anit-Saloon League, and others. She writes a remarkably fine hand, her flow of English is perfect, and combined with a wonderful memory, makes a visit with her an enjoyable event. She reveals starting to school at No. 5, and the children sat on slab benches and used goose quills for pens. No bell adorned the building to mark school time. Her first teacher was ELIZA HEARN, of whom she spoke highly. She later attended the Hopedale college. Many times before the Civil War she recalls seeing negros passing from the JOHNSON FARM to the COPE FARM, which were "underground railroad stations" from the South to Canada. For many years she was Clerk of the Ohio Women's Yearly Meeting a position of importance in the Quaker Church. She has also been an ardent worker for the dry cause. MISS FOX is an ardent republican and always votes the "straight" ticket and is glad that woman suffrage has given her the right to vote. After a long life of usefulness, she is now being tenderly cared for by her nephew CHESTER A. BRANSON and wife. May she have many more years of happy memories and pleasant associations. There is a small but clear picture of her in the atricle. I will be happy to send a copy to anyone interested.

I don't think I have any information on that particular Saner (Andrew b. abt. 1818), but maybe I can be of some help about the family in general. I am descended from what may be the same family. The original German form of the name, as you may know, is Zehner. "zehn" means "ten," so the name means, more or less, "Tenner." This is thought to either mean that some ancestor belonged to a Tenth Regiment or something like that in an old army, or that the ancestor was a tax collector (ten percent). In America the name was often changed to Seanor, Saner, Sanor, or other spellings. There are entire books written on these families, and if I were you, I'd look for them. There are also published genealogies of better and worse quality online and commercially available. Some of the Sanor/Seanor/Zehners of Stark County, Ohio were related to me. I "daughtered out" at Juliana Zehner, b. 1781 in Pennsylvania, m. Daniel Mathias, Jr., d. 1866 in Stark County, Ohio. Susan Osburn

The following was sent to me from another OH mailing list. As of July 1, 2003, the Ohio Historical Society Death Index will or may become inaccessible. Ohiohistory.org/dindex/index.cfm Please check this out the explanation is that the staff will be cut and lookup will not be available also they may have to limit the reading room hours because of budget cuts. It would be nice if they left the index for date purposes only... at least then you could find a date and be able then to search for and obituary in the newspaper.
