The Harrison Telegraph, Cadiz, Ohio, Wednesday, August 29, 1821 The following names were taken from a listing of road expenditures. In the interest time and space I am only listing dates, townships and surnames within each townships. The expenditures list the names of people whose land was next to the road or bridge being worked on and for people doing the work on the roads. In looking at the expenditures for what the people were paid, it looks like most of these are for services in clearing and preparing roadways. A note of interest, a wage for labor per hour in 1820 ranged from 37½ cents to 62½ cents, for ploughing they received $1.50 a day, for providing a horse and cart $1.00 a day, and for providing a 4 horse team they received $2.00 a day. Also I noted that there was an expenditure for whiskey -- 6¼ gallons for hands, 50 cents per gallon. Now I guess it is all in the interruption of the meaning of "hands" as to whether this is interesting or not. I have a roll of microfilm on early Cadiz newspapers. The months/years covered on this roll jump around and it is not a complete coverage of every weekly paper published. The Harrison Telegraph starts March 28, 1821 and goes through August 28, 1828, with dates missing and there is a paper for Dec. 8, 1832. There are a total of nine different newspapers on this roll covering several years. Please don't ask for lookups since that will take so much longer to jump around on the roll of film looking for a specific date -- I have to read everything as I go. The majority of what I am finding in the newspaper seems to be national and world news, not a whole lot of local news. It takes time to go through all the articles to be sure I don't miss any thing relating to Harrison Co. It will be easier for me to do it page by page. I promise, as I come across any names, dates, marriages or anything I think will help someone I will post it to this mailing list. The Harrison Telegraph, Wednesday, May 16, 1821, Cadiz, Ohio MARRIED On the 29th of March, at Herculaneum, Missouri, John W. Honey, Esq. To Miss Mary S. Austin, daughter of Mr. Horace Austin. On Thursday the 10th instant by. Rev. Wm. Taggart, Mr. William Christy to Miss Martha Harper, both of Harrison county. Robert Love, who escaped from the jail of this county on the night of the 8th inst. has been retaken and committed to prison. He was discovered riding along a public road, about 19 miles from Cadiz, on the 10th inst. about 9 o'clock in the morning, and was apprehended and brought back without much trouble; but had be been ever so active, he would have found it very difficult to have made his escape; for there were runners out in every direction, with handbills offering $100 reward for his body. Indeed the citizens of the United States have become so vigilant in the apprehension of persons charged with the commission of any capital offense, that it is almost useless for them to attempt to evade a fair and impartial trial.
