Are there any death records from 1906 for Harrison County? How about obits? Kevin
Speaking of Howells in Harrison County, does anyone have a Ferguson, McClain or Harper associated with a Howell (in the early 1800s)? In some family information I have, the last name Howell is noted, but not with any given names. I am trying to make a connection. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SusanJO@aol.com> To: <OHHARRIS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2003 1:29 PM Subject: Re: [OHHARRIS] obit > Oh! Oh! Missed that, I guess. I am interested in the HOWELLs because I think they may be related to my HARRIS-DICKERSON line. I am descended from Mary Ann HARRIS and Joshua C. DICKERSON, m. 1853 Belmont County, sometimes lived in Harrison Co. After Mary Ann died in 1879, some of the children lived with Howell families, which really makes me wonder what the connection was! Would you by chance have any info on this? Susan Osburn

Hi, I am new to the list. My question to the list concerns the churches that were in Germano. There are three buildings that were at one time probably churches of various denominations. Can anyone tell me which ones they were? There is the red brick on the turn, the white frame at the cemetery, and the red frame with boarded up windows towards Jewett. I hope someone can help me with this request. TIA JIM
I have just subscribed to this list and I am researching the following surnames: BIBEY - Alfred and Anna May nee:Phillips PHILLIPS - Elijah and Anna Eliza nee:DOULING My grandparents Alfred and Anna May Bibey lived most of the time in Jewett then moved to Germano. My grandmother went to the Presbyterian Church in Germano and to the Methodists Church in Jewett. She died in 1951 at the hospital in Wheeling, WV. Funeral services were held in Amsterdam, Oh at Sweeney Funeral Home, she was buried in Chartiers Cemetary, Carnegie, Pa. My grandfather was watchman for the railroad while they lived in Jewett. If anyone knows of this family and especially relatives that might have or are living in the area, please contact me. Thank you, Alice California

I did not find any Dodds in the index for 1830, yet Margaret Dodds m. Charles Scott in 4/1830 in Harrison Co. Margaret & Charles named children Esther and James, which is suggestive, but not conclusive. Robert is of an age, and lived near Margaret & Charles; might be Margaret's brother? I hope this works! I copied this from the Family History Library Catalog. My local one has a copy of this microfiche that does not return to Salt Lake City. It is not an all inclusive index (what is?) but it did yield a lot of information and surprises for me. Also it is a hardcover book that may be available in a library near folks in Ohio. These folks are my brick wall, as there are so many Scotts in the area pre-1850. Charles Scott was b. Jefferson Co.,OH 1805/06 d. 4/18/1864 Franklin twnshp, Harrison Co., buried in Freeport cemetery. On April 20, 1830 (Harrison Co. Probate Ct/Marriage records) he married Margaret Dodds b. 8/1810 or 9/1811 in Ireland d. 8/14/1881 Franklin twnshp, Harrison Co., buried in Freeport cemetery. I have not seen the headstones, & I assume the variation in birthdate is based on a statement that she was so many yrs., months, days old at dod, and different transcribers have calculated the date differently. Does anyone have another source? Either could be correct when compared to age reported in the census records. In 1840, 1850 & 1860 they are farming in Franklin twnshp. In 1840 there is also a John Scott in Franklin twhshp; anyone know if this was a relative to Charles? In the 1880 census Margaret is on the farm with a grandson, Charles Snee. In the Commemortative Biographical Record for Washington Co., Pa there is mention of a John Dodds, b.1771 Co. Donegal, who brought many poor Irish relations over to the U.S., including a brother for whom he purchased a house in Harrison Co., OH. But, it does not give the name of the brother or the decade of immigration. Is anyone else researching Dodds? Charles & Margaret had 10 known children: 1. James 1832-1893 m. Caroline ? 2. Mary 1833-? m. ? Hamilton 3. William 1834-1904 m. Mary ? 4. Easter (aka Hester, aka Esther) 1837-? m. Andrew McBarnes 5. Eleanor (aka Ellenor aka Ellen) 1838-1914 m. Henry Pittis Worstell 6. Maria 1840- ? m. Aquilla Tipton 7. Margaret 1844-? m. ?Snee/Smee (Gideon?) 8. Isabelle 1846-? m. Nelson Adams 9. John D. 1847-? m. Annis C. ? 10. Clifford 1855-1929 m. Eliza ? I have a note that there was a Thomas, but as I didn't find him in the census records. I suspect he is their grandson; Thomas b.1860 s/o James. I have had some interesting email conversations with some of the descendants, and we all seem to be "stuck" at Charles m. Margaret. Any assistance with Scott & Dodds will be appreciated. J.R. Just a suggestion: I provided a very helpful library with citations I had obtained from a printed source that stated the will I wanted was in Book X, page whatever and the library agreed to look it up. I also included the names and dates of the folks involved. A couple of weeks later I did receive the copies I was looking for but the librarian notified me that only one of the citations I provided her was correct. Since I had provided the names and dates, she just went ahead and looked them up and copied them for me. Don't despair that the documents you are searching for aren't there. They may be but remember the folks that made the indexes made mistakes too. I gave them 5 citations and 4 were wrong and not just by changing a D to an O!!! page numbers and everything were wrong. If you can pay someone to lookup the information or if you can order the microfilms from your local Family History Library you will probably find what you are looking for but under different book numbers and/or pages. I don't know if it matters, but for wills and such prior to 1850, the FHL has a microfilm with a BIG index of such records encompassing several counties. I even found several ancestors that had wills recorded in Hamilton County despite the fact that they died long after the county they lived in split from Hamilton County. I don't remember how it is titled, but if anyone is interested I will try and find my notes.
