A marriage permission slip is on ebay from Harrison Co., dated August 18th, 1819. It is signed by George Roush and Elizabeth for their dau. Anne giving permission for her to marriage David G. McGuire. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2209941569& ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1 I thought perhaps someone on this list might be researching this name and be interested. I do not have any additional information on this slip, I only that I noticed it is up for auction on ebay. Connie

I think I am one of your hard copy customers -- my memory isn't so hot, but I do recall getting an index to a book I didn't have! I think it was yours. If so, would like to have the correct version. Susan Osburn 814 N. Garfield Street Arlington, VA 22201
You should have gotten the book, and the CD, but the index was 18 pages off when it self corrected. Let me know what you still need, (all or the index) it is at the website, too. To all, I had a request for another copy of the Pathfinders article and the index, and in printing it, I noticed that there may be a major flaw in the index. If it made it into your copies, or was done later, I don't know, but no one has e-mailed or called saying "hey dummy!" so I am not sure. My final act when the document was completed, and proofread as well as can be by these tired eyes, was to cut the index from the back of the document to the front. Unknown to me, at some point, the index recompiled itself, adding 18 to the page numbers in the index, and repaginating some toward the back of the document. Needless to say, this isn't good. The index is all that is affected, and I am putting a corrected copy at the website. If you wish to have a paper copy sent to you, please let me know. (I will resend at no charge of course, to those of you who got the hard copy) If there is anyone out there that has not requested a copy of the entire document, and wishes to have a bound hard copy, please let me know. The charge for expenses and postage is $11.00. the revised index is available for download at http://www.wardjames.com/lindsayohio.html as is the corrected complete document. The download is free, of course, (no donations refused, however!!) Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused, and I am happy to say that I am hearing of some success stories as a result of this document being out there and available to many more now. JWL

(To Larry Dickerson): The gender of the six-month baby "Name Unknown" is not noted!! There is a short line in the box where M or F belongs, which may or may not be a ditto mark. If it is, then it means F, like the child listed above. The ditto marks made by the census taker in other parts of the page are mostly normal, two-line ditto marks, but there are cases where he made the marks awfully close together. Makes you wonder what happened when the census was taken, eh? Maybe Baby was asleep, and the family just said, "DON'T WAKE BABY!" and didn't tell the name -- maybe Baby was sickly and they avoided naming him/her in case s/he passed away? Hard to know! Susan Osburn
Thanks for the reply to my query regarding James Crumley. I thought after I had sent it that I neglected to mention how old James would have been in 1860, but 43 is spot on. I had found his obituary when I was in Ohio this past summer, but for some reason it did not register with me until just the other night that it said he was survived by a wife and children. I read that and thought "his wife was dead for ten years by then..." It would seem that, since at least two of the children in the household are named Barnet(t) and not Crumley, Rebecca had been married previously as well and that Barnett was not her maiden name. Does the census happen to indicate whether the unnamed infant was male or female? That child must belong to the marriage of James and Rebecca. I think this may also solve a long standing mystery for me. There is a Rebecca Crumley buried at Cadiz Union Cemetery. I have never been able to place her because, according to the inscription in the cemetery book, she is recorded as the 'wife of John.' James did have a brother named John, but his first wife was named Eleanor and his widow was Julia. I have never looked for Rebecca's stone, but now I wonder if it was read correctly. The stone says she died June 30, 1870, aged 48y 4m 27d. Since John died in 1865 and was survived by Julia, he could not have had a wife named Rebecca. It is intriguing that James' wife was 38 in 1860 and this Rebecca was 48 in 1870. [I believe I may have just found the link...] I did a search on the Mormon site for a marriage for Sarah Barnett or Mary Barnett. A Mary F. Barnett married Samuel F. Marchbank in Tuscarawas County 28 May 1871. Sarah E. Barnett married John Gallaher [probably Gallagher] on 16 December 1865 in Harrison County. Interestingly, buried on the same plot as Rebecca are an Ella Gallagher (b. August 30, 1847 [which just happens to make her 13 in 1860 (though not by the June 2 date of the census page, but that seems to be an allowable margin for error)] d. April 16, 1908] and her husband John W. Gallagher (d. August 10, 1892, aged 47y 8m 26d) as well as their son, Jesse B. Gallagher (1870-1935). Also buried on that same plot is Fannie Marchbank (1849 - 1920). The fact that Sarah E. Barnett was in the household of James and Rebecca in 1860, married a John Gallagher and is buried on the same plot as Rebecca Crumley would seem to be pretty strong evidence that Rebecca was indeed the widow of James. I am not sure who Fannie Marchbank was, but the coincidence of names seems to cement the deal. Perhaps Fannie was Mary F. The age is nearly right. Twelve in 1860 or a birth date of 1849 is within the usual range of accuracy for a census of that era..... I checked the marriages in Hanna's 'Historical Collections.' There are none listed between a Barnett and a woman named Rebecca, but there are two between a Barrett and a Rebecca. It's close, but not quite a match..... One took place in 1850, too late for the parents of Sarah and Mary, but the other was 18 December 1845 - a possibility (Thomas B. Barrett and Rebecca Conwell). I will have to check the marriage register the next time I get out to Ohio to see if 'Barrett' could possibly have been 'Barnett.' Now, if I could prove that the Thomas Barnett who died 9 September 1849 and is buried at Old Cadiz was the same person who married Rebecca Conwell..... Something else to look for on my next trip. "I am wondering whether someone can assist me in finding James Crumley on the census of 1860. My best guess is that he would be in either Short Creek or Cadiz Township." Got 'im! Town of Cadiz, p. 25. census taken June 2nd, 1860. Jas Crumley, age 43, Carpenter, head of household. Rebecca, age 38, H Keeper (presumably wife). Next listed is Sarah E. Barnet [sic], age 13; then Mary F., age 12, then "Name Unknown," age 6/12. Family and dwelling #184. Glad I could help! Susan Osburn (Dickerson, Dunlap, Work, McFadden, Barnes, Rankin, Harris)
I am wondering whether someone can assist me in finding James Crumley on the census of 1860. My best guess is that he would be in either Short Creek or Cadiz Township. I am trying to find out whether he married a second time. I know that James married Margaret Nelson on 10 August 1837. Margaret died 23 February 1854 and is buried at Dickerson Church. James died 28 January 1864, yet his obituary says "he leaves a wife and several children." James is also buried at Dickerson Church, but there is no stone for a wife other than Margaret. Is there a wife listed in his household in 1860? I have found two possible marriage records: a James Crumley wed Mary A. Buchanan on 29 April 1854 (this seems a bit to soon after the death of Margaret, but is not impossible) and the second, and perhaps more likely, is the marriage of James Crumley and Rebecca Barnett on 9 December 1858. [It seems improbable, but might both marriages be the same James?] As to children who may have survived him, if there were more than one, some must have come from the second marriage. James and Margaret had six known children: Thomas, Amanda, Emaly, Hannah, William and Joseph A. Crumley. All but Thomas were dead by 1851 and are buried at Dickerson Church. I do not know what became of Thomas, but there is no sign of him at Dickerson cemetery. I would appreciate any assistance someone may be able to provide. Thank you, Larry Dickerson

This stuff drives me crazy. There is no reason in this day that records should be destroyed by fire - or any other peril in a public facility. I was in a courthouse a couple of years ago where they had boxes sitting on the floor with court documents from the 1840's in them. The basement obviously had a water problem, and I asked the clerk, who had been pretty helpful, what the plans were. She just rolled her eyes and said, "Plan, what plan?" They've been there for fifteen years, and they probably will be thrown out when the sewer backs up." Fortunately, some folks got on it and rescued the documents and put them in an orderly manner and filmed them. I asked the County Clerk and asked her why these groups hadn't been allowed to film and organize the documents previously, she said that having them around was "Too much bother!" These are OUR records folks, bought and paid for by us and our relatives. We have to make sure that they are not lost due to the carelessness of those who just think of it as "old stuff". When I see how hard some of you work to photograph cemeteries and maintain copies of records, I get really upset when I see the folks who get paid to be caretakers pass it off. Be vigilant. While checking ebay today I came across this marriage permission slip signed by David Bonham and dated Jan. 1827. I checked the marriages in Harrison Co. and this would have been for the marriage of Smith Bonham and Julian Worley who were married Jan 4, 1827 by Rev. Benjamin Wood. Auction ends Dec. 14th. I thought this might be of interest to someone. I am not connected in anyway to the person listing this item, only trying to let others know it is available. I'd love to find something like this on one of my lines.
