    1. Pensioner in Hardin Co. in 1840
    2. Linda Hanks
    3. On the 1840 Census they asked if anyone in the household was receiving a military pension. If so, they wrote down the name and age of the person. "A census of pensioners for Revolutionary or military service ..." printed by Blair and Rives in 1841 lists all of the pensioners in 1840 by their residence. Hardin County, Ohio only had one pensioner. He was John Briby, age 78, residence given as Benton.

    2. I am trying to determine the name of the cemetery in which my great-uncle and cousin were buried in. The name begins with a Y and is some sort of avenue (or just an abbreviation for cemetery). Can anyone help? Or know where to obtain a listing of cemeteries in the county? D. A. Blakemore

    1. Thomas Carter of Ohio
    2. I just received the death certificate of Thomas Carter, who died on November 10, 1928, in Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio; and was born on May 4, 1860, in Hardin County. It says that his parents were William Carter (born in Virginia) and Elizabeth Collins (born in Hardin County). The informant was a relative, J. C. Carter. He was buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery on November 12, 1928. If you are a relative or are researching this family or line, please e-mail me and I will happily mail you the death certificate. D. A. 3. You will get the following information from the marriage records 1850-1860: The name of the groom and bride The date of application for the license The name of the person who applied for the license, usually the groom, but not always If either the bride or groom was not of legal age (18 for females and 21 for males), the one under age needed permission from a parent or guardian. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you get the name of the person who gave permission. The date of the marriage and the name of the minister or Justice of the Peace who performed the marriage ceremony if they returned the information to the court to be recorded in the book. Usually they did. As Patti said, you can call or write to the courthouse. I don't know what they charge. The Family History Library in Salt Lake has the information on microfilm: Film # 0914842 - Hardin Co., Ohio Marriage records Vol. 1-3, 1833-1867. It would cost you about $3.25 to view this film at your local Family History Center. Generally, the Family History Centers charge $0.25 to print a copy from microfilm. If you are patient, I have a copy of this film on indefinite loan at my local Family History Center, and I could look them up for you. I have a few other lookups to finish first. I don't know their phone number off-hand, but maybe someone else on the list knows. I have ordered copies of some marriage records from Lineages web site. There is a fee. Or maybe see if they are on microfilm through a FHC library. I have gone to the Courthouse in Kenton before and looked through the old ledger books there and wrote down most of the information that was in them and had someone there make a few copies for me while I was there. 3. The last death date recorded in Vol. 4 of the Hardin Co. Death Records is June 12, 1908. Does anyone on the list know if the deaths between June 12 and Dec. 20, when the State index starts, were recorded? It appears that the practice, when the records were maintained by the county, was to record them in the book once a year, usually around May or June. If no one knows, could some one in the Hardin Co. area find out? Linda, CA

    3. Dear Tom & Linda I am having the same problem trying to obtain my 3 gr-grandfather's death certificate. John Smith Lilley died on December 11, 1906 in Byhalia, Union County, OH and is buried in Kenton, Hardin County, OH. (He and his family lived in Hardin County many years before moving to a farm in Byhalia). The Union County Courthouse does not have it. I wrote to the OHS and received a letter stating: You will note that our researchers were unable to locate this name in the book "Death Records, Champaign & Union Counties, by DAR". .... that is the only "record" we (OHS) have among our holdings for deaths in both Union and Hardin Counties." It does say the LDS has microfilm copies of both Union and Hardin County death records. I have never gone to a LDS but I do know there are some in Columbus, OH. I live just north of Columbus but have not had the time to get there yet. I received a copy of what Union County's records are available on microfilm at LDS and it shows that LDS has death records, v1-3, 1867-1903. So, I still don't know if I would be able to find a death record for 1906 or not. Byhalia is near the Hardin County so I did check the index of Hardin County death index for 1867 - 1908, but it did not show John Lilley. In the Hardin County Death Index book, it does not show a George Osborn. It does have listings for the following Osborn surname: Albert, Alice, Emma Tena, Garfield, Lizzie, and Paul. There are a few Osbun & Osburn too, but no George. For Hardin County, the 'list of available records at LDS' shows they do have death records & index, v1-4, 1867-1908. I am wondering LInda, only at your convenience, could you look for a copy of a death record for John Smith Lilley? I would be glad to pay for the cost of the copy and could send you a self, addressed and stamped return envelope. Patti Smith Delaware, OH

    3. Hi Tom, I have microfilm copies of the index to the Hardin Co. death records to 1908, the corresponding death records, and the index to the State records that started sometime in Dec. 1908 on indefinite loan from the Salt Lake Family History Library at the Family History Center nearest to me in Huntington Beach, CA. I don't know where in CA. you are. If you are near Huntington Beach, you can come and look at them there, or I can try to check them for you next Wednesday. I volunteer there every Wednesday morning and it will depend on how busy we are. The death records from Dec. 20, 1908 thru 1944 are kept at the Ohio Historical Society. They have some of the indexes on-line there (1913- 1937) and you can find instructions on how to request a copy and how much money to send at their web site: http://www.ohiohistory.org/ On the opening page, click on Archives/Research Tools on the left side. Could he have died in a hospital not in Hardin Co.? If that might be the case, they sometimes went to a hospital in Columbus. I also have the index and death records for Franklin Co. on indefinite loan. Another possibility might be Findlay, or Lima? Hope this helps. Probate Court does not have his death certificate on file, even though the "official" start of state filing did not begin until 20 Dec 1908. In checking the Ohio Dept. of Health site, I found that death cert.'s are available only for deaths which occurred from 1945 to present. The OHS site shows no Hardin Co. holdings for 1908. 3. My great-grandparents GEORGE OSBORN and MARY C. (CROSS) OSBORN were residents of and about Kenton. George was born in Hardin Co. Nov. 1841, and died in Kenton Dec. 1908. He was a veteran of the 45th O.V.I. Mary C. was born abt.1848-50 in Logan Co., and died Nov. 1931 in Kenton. Both are buried in Grove Cem. Their children were Elwood, Bertha, Elderado, Pearl, Martha, Clarence (my grandfather), and Warren. I believe George's parents were JACOB E. and AMY OSBORN. I believe George's siblings were Sarah, Samuel(?), Ann, Isaac N., Mary, Ruany(?), Edwin(?), Andrew, Martha. Mary C.'s parents were PETER and SUSANNAH (WHITE) CROSS. Mary's siblings were Phoebe, Alexander, Margaret, Rosannah, Nancy, George W., Joseph P., Sarah, Albert(?), Minerva(?). I would like to correspond with anyone researching the OSBORN (and variants), CROSS, and WHITE surnames in Hardin Co. Correspondence of a more general nature concerning genealogy in Hardin Co. is also welcome. Tom Osborn (Calif.)
