    1. Q: Palestine, Ohio?- 3 different counties.
    2. Mary K Ward
    3. Dear Ann, Diane, Kathy, Michael, Lisa and others who responded, Many thanks for every bit of input-from everyone! I think I'll focus on East Palestine, Ohio on the border of Columbiana County, OH since N.H.WARD's family came from Washington Co, PA to Columbiana County in 1815. This is a good lesson for me -to be very specific when I write up MY data- and to check carefully data from others. I found that the 1886 compiler of the book "History of Hancock County", R. Brown -in a couple instances in this "mini-biography" either wasn't specific enough or entered conflicting information an instance or two. But, none-the-less the information is surely valuable as one must verify everything anyway! You folks are a GREAT help! Thanks much! 3. This family went from Washington County, PA to Columbiana County, Ohio. At least two of the son's -Nathan H. and Jonathan lived in Big Lick, Hancock County, Ohio in 1850 and 1860. Nathan H. WARD was a tailor in Findlay in 1834 for 5 years. James WARD b abt 1790 of Maryland and Elizabeth EATON of PA parents of 9 children: David WARD b abt 1810 PA Jonathan WARD b 1811 PA married Hannah b 1812 PA Nathan Henry? WARD b 18546 OH; M.C. Marvin 17 OH Farm laborer. I am trying to find a connection between N. H. WARD's line and my WARDs. I have to keep reminding myself that my earliest Mr. WARD (Mahlon James WARD's father) came from ENGLAND. I don't know when he came to America nor where he first settled- but most likely he didn't come directly to Ohio (Findlay, Hancock County). He was in America by or before 1832 when Mahlon was born. Note below, there WERE some ROBERTS also living in Big Lick township, Hancock County, Ohio where N. H. WARD and his brother Jonathan settled. Can anyone provide more info about these families. Thanks! Mary Kay WARD- in Richmond, VA I wonder if the James WARD of Maryland (from the History of Hancock County" book) -who married Elizabeth EATON of Pennsylvania--was born in England?? The book says they were living in Washington County, PA in 1812 when their son N. H. WARD was born--and when they moved to Columbiana Co, Ohio in 1815 they had him and also sons David and Jonathan. There was a family -James WARD 40-50 yrs old living in Licking twp, Muskigum County on the 1830 census with his wife and 3 girls & 1 boy. Maybe this is the James WARD and Eliza EATON -the family of N.H.WARD and his 8 siblings. 1850 census-Big lick twp, Hancock Co, OH, pg 440: Nathan H. WARD 37 PA, Eliza 36 OH, Leonard 12 OH, Alonzo 6 OH; Hannah 1 OH. (Nathan H. is "N.H."; Eliza is "Eliza McCAULLY b 1814; Leonard is son who was a college student when he died; Alonzo is the "A.H." and Hannah is the "H. Kate" - All of these are mentioned on pt 681 in Big Lick twp in the Hancock History book!!) Jonathan WARD 39 PA, Hannah 38 PA; Luther Mahlin Marvin 12 OH; Mollerbill Mc Guff 7 OH; Marvin McGuff. (Notice the name Mahlin for the 12 year old sounds like Mahlon). 1860 Census-Big lick twp, Hancock Co, OH pg 223: Dwelling 72, fam. 355: Henry (or Harpley?) WARD 46 PA farmer RE $7,000; PE $1,000; Eliza 44 OH; Alonzo 16 OH farmer; Hannah C. 11 OH; Jane McCulla 18 Farm Labor Dwelling 378; fam.367: Jonathan Ward 49 PA farmer RE $4000; PE $600; Hannah 48 PA; Seth L. 6 OH; M.C. Marvin 17 OH Farm laborer. I had also made notes of several ROBERTS families in Big Lick township in the 1860 census. Maybe my Mary A. ROBERTS husband & Fanny Emily ROBERTS father came from or was related to one of these families- Because Fanny ROBERTS married Mahlon J.WARD. 1860 Big Lick township: pg 219: David Roberts 49 OH and wife Mary 40 OH; John 18 OH; James 15 OH; Latilia 13 OH; George 10 OH; Solomon 8 OH; Erata 6 OH; Larona 2 male OH; Jasper 3/12 OH pg 218B: Owen W. 3. Re: James WARD of Maryland & Elizabeth EATON of Pennsylvania, parents of 9 children, one of them, N. H WARD. The following info came from the book the "History of Hancock County" compiled by R.C. Brown, Publ. Chicago, Warner, Beers & Co., 1886. I can't connect this family to my Mahlon James WARD of Findlay, Hancock Co, Ohio- but maybe someone else out there can claim this family. Mary Kay COLE Ward <mksroots@juno.com> N. H. WARD b June 8, 1812 in Washington Co, PA: Parents: James and Elizabeth EATON WARD, natives of Maryland & Penn. respectively. Family came to Ohio in 1815 with 3 sons, David, Jonathan and N. H., settling in Columbiana Co where 6 more children were born to them: Joshua, Seth, Mahala, Edmond, Artemus & Sarah. N. H. waard became a tailor and came to Findlay, Ohio in 1834 where for 5 years he had a tailor shop. He spent 5 yrs tailoring in Palestine, Ohio and in 1844 came to Findlay, (Hancock Co) Ohio. He married Nov 6 1834 Casander BAYLESS b 1807 and d Aug 3, 1836. In 1837 he married Casander LEONARD b 1811 who shortly before her death bore him a son, Leonard C. WARD b 29 May 1838 who died (a Mt Union College student) at age 24 on 17 May 1862. In 1839 Mr. N. H. WARD married 3rd, Eliza McCAULLY b July 24, 1814 and to them were born 3 children, two who survived: A. J. WARD b Jan 12 1844 married in 1879 Coraline HOYT and H. Kate WARD b 17 Feb 1849 married R. 3. Tonight I extracted the following names from the Cass Twp, Hancock County, Ohio 1850 census. They are ones showing birthplace as Virginia. Catherine Karn (sp?) wife of Joshua age 35 household 59 John MacKrill wife Susannah age 51 household 82 Catherine Crawford (living with James Crawford, prob son) age 53 household 95 Isaac Baker wife Rebecca age 48 household 81 Edward Corzzar wife Mary Ann age 26 household 11 Mary Cobb husband Foster age 33 household 7 In addition, Sarah Eckert husband John age 53 household 3 (census says PA, but should be VA we believe) John and Sarah went from Fairfield County to Cass Twp, Hancock County, in 1839 or so. Would like to correspond with descendants of any of the above. However, we are particularly interested in Mary and Foster Cobb. They are buried in the Baker-Hamlin Cemetery, right near Findley, where John and Sarah Eckert are buried. Also interested in the Isaac Baker descendants of above, and those of Alexander Baker, James Baker and John Baker - the last three are buried at the Baker-Hamlin Cemetery. Alexander was married to John and Sarah's daughter Catherine. One more item - living with John and Sarah Eckert in 1850 is a Emaline Huffman, age 8 (who stayed with Sarah through 1870 census) and a Tallman Beardsley, age 7. We do not know who these children are. By the way, anyone needing a lookup for Cass Twp only, 1850, let us know. Don and Mary in Wyoming

    3. Hi, I'm new to this list, so I will post my Hancock Co. ancestors and hope for the best. I'm looking for information about my g-grandparents, Harrison H. Harper and Elizabeth Johnson Harper. They were in Mt. Blanchard, Hancock Co., OH in the 1880 census, and by the 1900 census, Harrison was in Burlingame, Osage Co., KS, with another wife named Jennie. Harrison was b. in OH and his wife Elizabeth in VA. Jennie was b. IL. Harrison and Elizabeth had eight children, all b. in OH. They were Etta, William, Maxwell, Elihu, Harlow (or Harley), Charley, Clara, and Warren. It appears that when Harrison left OH, the older children stayed in OH, the younger ones went with him. Harrison was a Methodist preacher, and later a dry goods store worker. Any information anyone has on this family would be greatly appreciated. jane

    1. Fraternal Hardware
    2. Don and Mary Saban
    3. I am sending this to a number of mailing lists that we belong to. Hopefully, someone out there might know what they are. First of all, I received this last Winter a trunk that had what I was told was probably Masonic "hardware" in it and that it belonged to my Grandfather who died in 1960. My step-grandmother just died at 101, so that is why it took so long to get here! In looking at the various items, one set of items intrique me and I am not sure they are Masonic. There are two what I would call "suspenders". About two inches wide, heavy leather on one side (which is red). That is the back side. Am not sure what the material is on the front side, but it is red, gold and green stripes (small stripes). On each strap are two metal slide on gold "emblems" connected by chains. The top emblem is described as follows: Center top is what looks like an eye. Below the eye is an horizontal three linke chain. There are twelve "lines" spreading out from the eye in a half circle, bottom half of a circle, connecting the eye and the chain. Below this, the emblem is divided in three parts. Top left is what looks like a lamb, lying on the grass. Top right is definitely a male lion, reared up and ready to fight. Bottom center emblem made of eight crossed swords and sheperds staff. The latin word PAXAUT is under the top left emblem (the lamb). The latin word BELLUM is under the top right emblem (the lion). The bottom metal gold emblem has PATRIARCHS MILITANT written across the top. In the center, full size, is a solder's shield. Top right on the shield is a crown. Written across the sheild diagonally from top left to bottom right are the words JUSTITIA UNIVERSALIS. Behind the shield is a sword and a sheperds staff. This is where my four years of Latin might help: PAXAUT - Pax is the Latin word for Peace BELLUM - Bellum is the Latin word for War JUSTITIA - There is no "j" in Latin, replaced with an "i" - basically means right or justice UNIVERSALIS - Modified from the Latin word Universum (plural) meaning All. So I know what it says, but what organization did they belong to? The crown throws me as it may be a "foreign" organization. My husband wonders if it may be Knights of Columbus, a Roman Catholic organization. My grandfather was not Catholic, but his second wife was before they were married. And her father may have been.
