FYI to list subscribers Regarding the Hancock County USGenWeb Project site at: http://home.earthlink.net/~dwkoester/hanmain/hanmain.html "Queries posted in 1996 and 1997 have been removed from the site in order to provide for this years postings. Please feel free to resubmit your query if yours was among those removed." I agonized over the need to do this, but the fact is that we've had so many queries posted and surnames listed that the database required to maintain all of that data became too cumbersome to handle given the resources available. It is hoped that people will understand the need to have made this change. Please let me know if you have any questons. Hi all . . . The Fairfield County list has recently had discussions about Quadrennial Enumerations which were supposedly taken every 4 years in Ohio from 1819 to about 1911. Do any of these still exist for Hancock County and, if so, where? Also, I am slowly posting my unknown Hancock County pictures at www.city-gallery.com (in the Photo Album). This is a fun site that I believe I learned about from someone on our list Please let me know if you recognize anyone. ~Gaye~

I would really appreciate a lookup for the family of my ancestors, Harrison Harper and Elizabeth Johnson Harper. They are in the 1880 Hancock Co. census, living in Mt. Blanchard. Elizabeth died sometime after December 1882, when their youngest child was born. I think Harrison moved the family to Kansas in 1889. Harrison md. again abt 1895 to "Jennie." Don't know if he md. her in OH or KS. Harrison was a Methodist minister, in OH from 1872, transferring to KS in 1889. I already have the 1880 census information. I don't think they were in Hancock Co. in 1870, but if there is anything in the county history book, or anything in the cemetery book or wills on Elizabeth Harper, I would really like to get that information. Also, if there is a record of a marriage for Harrison Harper after 1882. Thank you very much. Hello Gaye! Your article regarding the photographs etc., prompted me to be in touch with you in hopes you may be able to give me some leads that will help me find some much needed information. My Grandmother was Celia Priscilla Gates. Her father, (and my G-Grandfather) was David Gates, her Mother,(and my G-Grandmother )was Zuerilda VanMeter Gates. My Gates family came mostly from the Belmont Co. Ohio area. David and Zuerilda had several children . Hudson, Celia, Isabella(better known as Bella) Lucy, Valentine, George, Cyrus, and Grant, that we can identify. The 1880 Census of Marshall Co. W.Va. shows these children living in Marshall Co with Bella as Keeping House. There is no mention of David in the 1880 Census and since Zuerilda died in 1878 in Marshall Co. W.Va this brings us to believe David was staying in this household in 1880 and we are unable to locate him in Marshall Co. at all nor in Belmont, Co. My problem is: My father was born in1894 and my Mother has told us he was born in Findley, Ohio. Search for a birth certificate etc. has been to no avail. Grandmother Celia married and moved to Weatherford,Texas and separated about 5 or six months before Dad's birth, and returned back to Ohio or W.Va. We have not been able to locate a birth certificate in Ohio, W.va, or Texas. WE are aware many Gates's lived in Findley at this time and would like to hear from anyone who could give us any leads on information on any of this family. Grandfather David GAtes did invent the Gates churn and we find again later manufacturing them in the W.Va. area. I didn't mean to be so long but felt some of this info might be useful to someone who could give me a lead. Many thanks for your patience. D.Knotts------E-Mail -MKnotts1@AOL.Com
One more clue to my unknown pictures: I have one on a small card which looks like it might commerate a death. It is of an older man and it has the dates Oct. 9, 1822 and Oct. 9, 1892 on either side of the picture. It has small black & white ribbons at the top. Do those dates match any ancestors out there? ~Gaye~
--part1_0.d5522e13.259e955c_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In November, several members exhibited an interest in early photographers in Hancock County. Margaret Calvin mentioned a book called Ohio Photographers. A copy is in the Findlay Hancock Library and, on my request, Cheryl Treece kindly took a look at it for us. She describes it as a list of all early photographers in Ohio along with biographies for some. Cheryl took the time to look for Findlay photographers and their dates and combined it with the library's early city directories to augment the list. I have included an attachment of what she sent me for those interested. I have been very fortunate to have a large collection of old pictures from the early Ohio days. I just came into possession of about 140 such photos - not one is labeled and my grandmother (1888 -1983) had banded them together noting that she didn't know the subjects either. I don't really want to part with them until I know who they are and that they are not relatives - any suggestions? I do have a very nice picture of Cora CORSEY and her husband William GATES who I don't think are relatives - perhaps 1910-20. I believe Cora lived with my grandmother's family in Findlay for awhile. Anyone related and want a copy of the picture? Hope Cheryl's info is of interest to some of you . . . ~Gaye~ --part1_0.d5522e13.259e955c_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; name="Findlay Photographers E-Mail" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline; filename="Findlay Photographers E-Mail" From: Newyearsbaby1151@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, December 28, 1999 11:40 AM Subject: Ohio Photographers I found the book and it listed all the photographers of OH plus selected bio= graphies. Searching for the Social Security Index URL. Anyone have it handy? Also, if an older man may have passed away, but we are not sure, will the new ones be added? My dad has an elderly cousin whose address apparently is not his any longer. We don't know if he is in a nursing home in NC where he lived, if he passed away, or if perhaps he is in another state near one of his sons. (Of course, I don't know which states.) Suzy
I am new to the list. Does anyone have infor on a Harry M. Walters born 7/18/1895 in Hancock county died 9/81 in Dayton Ohio her married Armilda F. Bibler 11/1921 she was born on 12/25/1899 in Hancock County(I think) died 12/16/1971 in FA. They are my grandparents. Merry Christmas
I have a pre-Civil War daguerreotype of an Emily S. HARRISON, who probably lived in Crawford Co. Pa. or Hancock Co. Ohio. Anybody know who this is? Fred Griswold
My experience on the Fayette County PA rootsweb list has raised a couple of questions about the Hancock County list.. 1. The Fayette members are prolific about sending in transcripts of books, obituaries, etc., which they tell me are archived in searchable form. Does Hancock County archive this type of information when it is sent in by list members? I have a couple of items which might be interesting to Hancock County genealogists - one being my grandmother's (Metta Snyder Pendleton) "Birthday Book" from the early 1900's which lists friends as well as family members. As well as her collection of calling cards which is mainly family (Pendleton and Snyder) members. (2) For my own information: I know it's out there, but what is the Hancock County OGS Chapter web address? I reach a dead end when I try to get there through GenWeb, Rootsweb, and even through an old address I had when they were on Bright.net. All say it does not exist, but I know it does. Just can't remember what the sign in the library room says. Anybody have the answers? Thanks. Leah Pendleton Raney in San Marcos, Texas P.S. I had to be on the web to find "Books on Main" right across from the library. They had several of the early Hancock County histories that I was looking for. Expensive, in a way, but all books are these days and these histories aren't being made anymore.
The archives to all the Rootsweb Lists, including Hancock, can be found here: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl All that stuff that is sent to the Fayette list can be found there...the problem is that many many people do not know where to look or that they are even archived. I hope that all of those histories, obits, etc. are also going to the GenWeb archives or the Fayette County page, where they are more apt to be found. I always submit to both the GenWeb archives and the county GenWeb site, and everything always gets put online somewhere. Go here to find out how to submit to the GenWeb archives: Ihttp://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/ohfiles.htm If you like lists a lot, you can join this one, and the posts will show up on an Ohio statewide search of the GenWeb archives: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L-request@rootsweb.com Debbie
Hi, I have a German-language Bible that once belonged to a Schlee/Matthes/Hoppenberg family in Findlay. (In addition a Smith, Driesbach and Schaffer are mentioned.) Although I would like to keep the Bible, there are a number of documents, letters and clippings that I would like to send to the local genealogical/historical society. Does anyone know how I would do that? In case anyone is interested, here is a rundown of the people noted in the documents (some are written in the Gothic German script): Schlee + John (Johann) Schlee, died Feb. 14, 1914, age 59. Born in Breitenhole, Bavaria. Immigrated from Germany at age 14. Went to Columbus before moving to Findlay. Member of Dennison, Karg and Schlee, a meat company. (Survived by three sisters and a brother, all unidentified.) + Martha Johannah Schlee nee Matthes, b. Aug. 31, 1858. m. John Schlee. + Gustav Henry Schlee, b. Jan. 30, 1880. Was with firm of Van Tassel and Schlee in 1914. (son of Martha and John) + Amil (Emil) Herman Schlee, b. Dec. 4, 1881. (son of Martha and John) Matthes + Henry (Heinrich) Matthes, d. March 28, 1894, page 70. + Johanna Matthes, d. Oct. 25, 1898, b. April 16, 1824 in Ebersdorf. M. for 25 years to Heinrich Matthes. Immigrated on June 12, 1849 and settled in Findlay. Had six children, only three named in obit. + Martha Johanna Schlee (daughter of Henry and Johanna Mathtes. See additional information above.) + Mrs. Gus (also listed as Gust) Hoppenberg (daughter of Henry and Johanna Matthes). Presumably this is the Gustaf Hoppenberg listed below. + Heinrich Schlee (son of Henry and Johanna Matthes) Hoppenberg + Henry C. Hoppenberg, b. Aug. 3, 1872 in Findlay to Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg. m. Roddie Gernflo on Nov. 18, 1897. d. 1924. + Pauline Hoppenberg (daughter of Henry and Roddie Hoppenberg) + Gustav Hoppenberg (son of Henry and Roddie Hoppenberg) + Catherine Hoppenberg (daughter of Henry and Roddie Hoppenberg) + John Hoppenberg (son of Henry and Roddie Hoppenberg) + Mrs. Dave Schaffer (daughter of Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg) + Ernest Hoppenberg (son of Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg) + Mrs. L.A. Driesbach of Oakland, Calif. (daughter of Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg) + Charles Hoppenberg of Texas (son of Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg) + Mrs. Harry Smith of Alma, Mich. (daughter of Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg) + Mary Hoppenberg of California (daughter of Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg) + Johanna Hoppenberg of California (daughter of Gustav and Pauline Hoppenberg) Most of the members of these families appear to have attended St. Johns Lutheran Church in Findlay.
