I am seeking the mariage and birth certs for my maternal great grandparents who were married in Muskingum Co, OHIO in January of 188/9. They died in Hancock Co, OH after 1919. Would like to correspond with others researching these family lines. Margaret Shank ( Arvada, CO)
Hi Len: I have some connection with the Punches/Pontius line. Margaret Hager mar'd Peter Punches and had at least 7 children. Somewhere I also have more info from another contact, but I have to look it up. Hello - I am researching the surname PUNCHES from Hancock County, OH. The family seems to have originated in PA. Have heard the original name was PONTIUS, but am having trouble with connecting it. The earliest ancestor I've found is Peter Punches, born in PA, living in Hancock, OH. An early deed shows that he came from Pickaway County, OH. Prior to that, the line is lost. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have information on this line. Len in Alaska

Would like to correspond with others researching BROWN and ABBOTT families from Muskingum CO, OH whose above children married in 1888/9. The family moved to Hancock CO, OH where their daughter, my grandmother, Laila Mae was born in 1893. "Mae" married Oscar Harrison Winters in Findlay, Hancock OH in 1918. Mae had brothers Roy and Stuart/Stewart that I know of. Margaret Shank ( Arvada, CO) researching SHANK, GRANT, ABBOTT, BROWN, CRITES, POWELL, WINTERS

Suzanna, Please feel free to track AFB Rose in Carroll Co, MO. It's been a while since I worked with these families. I have been focused on David Rose and Hannah Par, and his parents, Robert Rose and wife Abigail, in PA, NJ, and NY. I have a funeral card, obituary listing, and cemetery register that says Elizabeth Rose Hall died 14 Feb 1909, not 1908. More importantly for you, I have several records for AFB and his wife Mary in Hancock Co, OH. Mary had been committed to the state insane asylum at least twice. AFB had to take out a huge loan to pay for her keep. There is a large packet of material in the court records re a lawsuit filed by the lender to get his money back. Not very happy material. Shortly after he remarried, AFB and his wife evidently went to WI. Without digging through my files, I think I recall that one of his sons was there already. Scott, The BLM website is www.glorecords.blm.gov/. This is a wonderful site. If you had ancestors that acquired land directly from the Federal government, you can actually print a copy of the original patent directly from this site. They have images as well as textual legal descriptions that can be downloaded. I do not know where the Warner history is available for lookup. It is fairly rare to find. More available is "History of Hancock County, Ohio, by D.B. Beardsley, Republic Printing Co, 1881. I would suggest that you go to GenWeb and search for the nearest large library near you that may have its card catalog on line. Look for either book. Both are fairly good. If you can find it in a nearby library, the research section will usually look up simple requests for you. You can uaually make the request by E-mail now. The Beardsley book has been microfilmed by the LDS. You can order film #1000318 from your local Family History Center. The history is the first item on the film. You will probably find a later history by Brown. It is a rehash of the other books with much of the family detail left out. My personal preference is either Warner or Beardsley. Each has different features. Both have lots of people stuff. Gerry ----- Original Message ----- From: SAFE,SCOTT (HP-FtCollins,ex1) <scott_safe@hp.com> To: 'Gerald S. Thanks again Darlene. It does not appear there is a quick solution to this problem. Someone needs to research the appropriate county records in MI, once James G. Rose is located there. The 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses should be checked to help locate the family. Beers says they were there by 1886. Jean, No, the Judge Rose I was referencing was a son of John Rose. John was brother to James Rose, and son of David Rose and Hannah Par. Judge James E. Rose of Auburn Indiana prepared a (partial) manuscript titled "Genealogical Biographical and Historical Sketches and Reminiscenses from Records and Traditions of the Rose Family" in 1888. John R. Scoville of Butler, Indiana located it in 1972. The mss was published in the Rose Family Bulletin, IX, Whole No. 34, June 1974, pp 937-940. Christine Rose also printed two reunion notices for this family which took place in the 1880's. They were in RFB , No.2, pp 31-32, and No. 3, pp 55-57. I am alittle confused by the lineage listed below. I found a marriage license for James G. Rose and Emma Emily Saunders in the Hancock Co, OH, vital records. You indicate that James Rose married Emily Wolford. I know that the couple was listed with Andrew Wolford on the 1850 census in Deleware Township, page 82. Charlotte was not there. This fits with your ecord of her death in 1847. I have always wondered why they were with this family. Emily is listed as born in England. All the rest of the family is listed born in OH. Was she adopted? Was she the daughter of an earlier wife of Andrew from the earlier wife's prior marriage? Emily just seems to be too old to be the daughter of Andrew and Charlotte. I have assumed she was not related, and that James Rose was working for Andrew Wolford. Perhaps Emily WAS the daughter of Andrew and Charlotte. She is about five years older than James Rose. She may have been married once already, and married James under her married name. I don't remember looking in the VR files for Emily Wolford married to a Saunders. Maybe you could do that. If true, that would identify her first husband and probably confirm her maiden name. There may be marriage and death records for Saunders in Fairfield or Hancock Cos, OH. If she was NOT the daughter of Andrew Wolford, then one needs to look for a marriage of any male Saunders surname to any Emily given name prior to 22 April 1850. The 1840 census for Andrew Wolford lists one male 20-30, one male under 5, one female 20-30, and one female under 5. This raises the question again, Why are there not two female children listed? Pages 25-26 of that census list many of your and my family names. However, there is no Saunders listed. The name Saunders is known in Fairfield Conty, OH, from where many of these folks came. Final question, How are you related to the James G. Rose listed above? You call him an ancestor, but I don't see any descendancy listed in your lineage. He is a grandson to my James Rose and Sarah Norris through my John Rose and Margaret Berry. John and Margaret's daughter, Elizabeth, who married Obediah Hall, was my ancestress. She was next youngest in age to James G. Rose. My line follows through Calvin Sigel Hall and Laura Hudson, Vallie Blanche Hall and Daniel Hale Taylor Jr., Ella Izora Marie Taylor and Sylvester Otto Lenzen, to me Gerald Sylvester Lenzen md 1959 to Constance Lou Miller. My Taylor Grandparents and Hall Great Grandparents are all buried in Riverview Cemetery here in Portland, Oregon where we live. I have briefly looked through my notes for any other new info on James G. Rose. Beers and Co. "History of Hancock Co., Ohio," by R.C. Brown Warner, 1886, says that he was in Michigan at the time of publication. If you look him up on the BLM Federal Land Records web site, there are a huge number of entries for James G. Rose. I have never tracked him down there, so I don't know whether or not that is your James G. Rose. It's worth a try. Let me know how you are related to the Rose clan. According to another branch of the family, William LONG died in 1813 in/near Detroit, MI during the War of 1812. Since I had no proof of this, I decided that the military records should be able to give me the hard proof, even though he did die at age 16, if their records are correct. If he did not die at that time, then I could prove that too. ROSE Family: I'm glad I asked about Aaron Fenton Burson ROSE. I have hunted for his family for years in MO. All I had to go on was an obit for his wife and the name of the cemetery. After numerous letters, still no help. AFB/Burson's wife was a ROLLER. Her mother was a THOMAS, one of my line. I would be happy to share the info that I have with others. Perhaps between two of us, we will have more information than either of us had before. Suzy
Suzanna, I've gone back and reviewed my comment to you about looking for a record of William Long in his parents records. I don't know where I got the idea that Williams parents could acquire his benefits. That idea is incorrect based on my own research experience. Ignore the recommendation. I'm still wide-eyed about his young age at death. Is that correct according to some record? Or is it family tradition? Had he been married? Why do you need much more info about him if he had no descendants? ----------- Aaron Fenton Burson Rose was the youngest child of John Rose and Margaret Berry. I have bits and pieces of information about AFB, his wives, and his descendants. My GGGrandmother, Elizabeth Rose Hall, AFB's oldest sister, died in AFB's home in Carrollton, Carroll Co, MO, in 1909. I tried to track some of AFB's descendants when in Salt Lake City several trips back. I wasn't too successful. As I recall, without digging through my notes, some went to Wisconsin, others to Indiana and Missouri. Christine Rose may have more descendant information that she has not included in her report on the David Rose and Hannah Par family. These are AFB's Great Grandparents. Are you a descendant of AFB Rose? I have been searching for a direct descendant of AFB for many years. A family history written in the 1880's in Indiana by Judge James Rose attributes the particulars in that report to Burson Rose of Hancock Co, OH. As far as I can determine, there was no other "Burson" Rose in the area at the time. I am assuming that AFB somehow acquired the family bible willed to his uncle, James Rose, by James Rose, Sr. I can find no other source that would have the details mentioned in the Judge Rose manuscript. I'd like to find that bible. Do you know of it's whereabouts? ----- Original Message ----- From: Suzanna Wells <wellses@ohio.tds.net> To: Gerald S. Suzy, I am planning to visit our local archives on Friday (Sumner County, TN). They have a book that lists people who filed pension applications (I found Benjamin F. Sickles from OH in it). I would be happy to check it for you. Have you already tried that??? Sandra Tipton > From: Suzanna Wells <wellses@ohio.tds.net> Looking for proof of a relative in the War of 1812. Suzanna, I am struck by the birth and death dates listed for the William Long you are researching as having died in MI in the War of 1812. It appears he was 16 years old at the time. Was this info from some record, or is it from family tradition? If he was really that young, he was probably not married. As his natural heirs, his parents could take out claims for his pension or bounty land. Have you looked in Virgil White's War of 1812 index for that type of claim? I have copies of both Hervey Scott and C. M. I. Wiseman's histories of Fairfield Co, OH. Neither one lists a John Long in their writeups. A John Long is listed in several locations in the early tax records of Fairfield County, OH. There appear to be more than one of them. If you are having trouble finding from where they came, you might try Huntingdon Co, PA. There were Longs living near and married into my Lane and Brown families in several genearations. They were in Fairfield Co about 1800. Family Tree Maker's CD # 175, Ohio Vital Records #1, lists John Long's will abstract on page 584 of Gateway to the West. His wife Sebena and son, Robert, are listed as executors. No other children are listed. William Roller and Andrew Poulson were witnesses. By coincidence, two entries lower on the page from John Long is my ancestor, James Rose. His executor, John Rose, was my ancestor. Looking for proof of a relative in the War of 1812. I'd like to send for the military records. My ggggrandmother's brother's line showed that another brother, William Franklin LONG b 1 Mar 1797 d. 6 Dec 1813 (in/near Detroit, MI) in the War of 1812). I have looked for lists, but have not found his name. TheyWilliam's parents (John and Isabella/Sibella (THOMPSON) LONG) were in Fairfield Co., OH, in 1810, so William probably served from that area. They were not in Hancock Co. until the 1820's. Any idea where to go from here? Suzy
